I like the drummer on track 7. He sounds like he's played his share of R&B.

So your verifying that I don't think it's Kenny Burrell.

Let's talk about track one - George Benson was my pick as a possible guitarist on this track. I'm not absolutely positive that it's him, BUT I am positive that it's NOT Kenny Burrell. The other things that are bothering me about this is that the Tenor doesn't sound like Red Holloway, Jimmy Forrest (can't really say about Harold Vick) and the drums don't sound like Joe Dukes. I have the HHTM on "Something Slick" (Crash) and this isn't it. Any pro or con on this?

For the past 2 or 3 days, WKCR's Bird Flight has been opening each show with a track from the uptown cd and identifying the cd by name and label. Yesterday they played BEBOP and today was NIGHT IN TUNISIA.

Oh. You have the newer model.

NOT HANK ?!! Then it must be SAM BOURNE !!

YIKES ! HOW DID I MISS JAWS ON TRACK NINE YESTERDAY ! And Track 8 is buggin' the hell out of me. The tenor is sounding like Ben Webster to me in the beginning of the track and then the second half - NOT ! At about 3:48 in he blows this harmonic that sounds totally UN-BEN to me.

A quick post on my impressions from yesterday. Track 3 - Hank Crawford - after he left Atlantic (Kudu or where he went after that) . He doesn't go into too much blowing here, but he wasn't supposed to. That wasn't the goal here. Playing the melody well is - and Hank does that. The rhythm section is subdued too, although it's probably the NYC crew of that era, (although I don't hear Purdie, Rainey) and they are pretty much cooling it - also per production values. I'd guess this to be from the middle to late 70s. You could call it a precursor to "smooth" jazz. I pretty much stopped buying Hank's stuff after the Atlantic period. My fav from Atlantic is "Mr. Blues plays Lady Soul". Hank live in the studio front of a swingin' big band with the rhythm section cooking ! Track 4- Etta Jones and Houston Person. Swingin' and warm. Just what it was supposed to be and pretty much what they sounded like in person. Track 7 - this is bugging me. I should know this. Gotta listen more today. Track 8 - is that a Kalimba or is it steel drums ? I think Kalimba. Is the bone Steve Turre? Beautiful chops!. Is it his record? Track 9 - this is the track that nobody digs...well ...I dig it. Don't know who it is, but I'm curious. The bass sounds like Jaco, but doesn't display the prodigious technique, so I guess it's not him. This is FUSION in the good sense of the term afaic. I dig the keyboards and whoever is doing the organ sounds is on the money and keeping it interesting - putting the the church/gospel element in there. More listening today.

That's what I get for posting in a rush from notes that I made earlier in the day. By the time I posted all I remembered was that the soloist wasn't Hawk.

Back for a little more ( sorry to be posting in bits and pieces but I'm doing a juggling act tonight) another possiblilty on trumpet for track 6 is Rex Stewart. The rest of disc one is all enjoyable - several artists I think I'm about to recognize, but haven't yet. I'll listen more. Edit to add -OOPS I forgot to turn the page over - I had more notes on the other side of the page. Track 12 - I always get the titles for Windows and Dolphin Dance confused, but it's THAT one. Not sure who it is though. 13 is off the wall but fine. 14 - Obviously the title is Mountain Oysters. I think I know this so I'll cool it. 15 - Stanley T. and most likely Shirley Scott. The usual Stanley and alway a gas. 16 & 17 I have to listen again.

Continuation from my post above - 3 - don't know but it grooves. 4- Kinda sounds like Sonny but ....not quite. 5- Tongue in cheek . Did he take the horn apart ? 6- TMIL. This really has that JATP vibe to it. I don't think the trumpet is Roy ( I thought so at first) but then he got on that bridge and got kinda...florid..kinda maybe Harry Jamesish almost. I'm thinkin' Charlie Shavers. The Drummer played four on the bass drum, but I couldn't get a handle on him..I don't think it was Buddy or Officer Krupke. The Tenor playing behind the trumpet really sounded Hawkish, but the solo didn't sound like Hawk to me. Flip Phillips ?

Thanks Jim - I'm diggin' ALL of it and having a blast doing so. I listened to both discs today and I'll be doing some posting... Some preliminaries: 1 - HHTM organ groove - not really sure but I'm leaning towards McDuff and George Benson on this. The light "arranging" is the type of thing that McDuff did well and the guitar could be early George. Not sure about the Tenor, but the production values sure indicate one take Prestige attitudes. Let small fluffs go. Who care ?! The feeling is there! 2- I thought I had heard most of the Pops around, but I NEVER heard this one! It's a hoot ! It's latter day Pops judging and I'm pretty sure that's Tyree Glenn on bone. That sound. I'll be back later with more.

Recording Stuff Off The Internet On My Computer

So am I. Everybody seems to mention audacity.com as a free program capable of doing this. I've been unable to muster the brain power and time necessary to download it and learn how to use it. -
I got mine this afternoon - I should be able to get some listening done and be ready to post in a couple of days.

I'm assuming "Portraits of a Legend" is pretty much a greatest hits package and "Night Beat" is one of Sam Cooke's best albums so I pretty much second the above reccomendations and would like to add (in whatever the current configuration is) the recordings Sam Cooke made as lead singer for the SOUL STIRRERS. It's probably available on Specialty cds (which is Fantasy owned). Some great music and a great example of the influence of Gospel Music on R&B, etc.

Yeah...this looks like one I could go for too. I'm surprised I missed this one when it came out - I have absolutely NO recolection of it!
