  1. What a great book ! I'm revisiting this after many years. I first read it around 1964 or 1965. I had never heard of Vonnegut and thought I was buying a sci-fi novel. When I got to the end I said to myself "What the hell was that !" and immediatel reread it.
  2. Thanks for an enjoyable set Chris. There's some really nice stuff here. Here's goes. I'll tell ya - these blindfold tests are humbling ! 1- Changes to "There'll Never Be Another You". 2- Nice take on "Indian Summer" and some very Lester influenced playing. Not sure who., Zoot and Al crossed my mind. Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz did too. 3- "I'm Beginning To See The Light". Well - recognizing the soloists (Bud, Rex, Bean, Cootie) led me tto 'The Big Challenge" . 4- Nice medium tempo blues. Kenny Burrell is my guess on guitar, Jerome Richardson on flute? J.J ? 5- Don't know. My first impresssion was Lee Morgan, but I don't know this track. 6- Up blues - don't know the track,. Trombone / Tenor front line - nice. 7- Solo piano "In My Solitude". Beautiful. 8- West Of The Moon. Again a Lesterish player, but on alto. 9- Don't know. 10. Don't know 11. Johnny Hodges kicks off the blowing. I have this. I think it's on the Bean/Duke album. Lawrence Brown, Carney, etc. 12. Blues. I'm gueessing Clark Terry, Oscar, Lockjaw,.Ray Brown. I guess it's a Pablo thing ? 13. Benny doing "More Than You Know". At least it sure sounds like it. Beautiful performance from all concerned. 14. HHTM. Is it early JATP? Hamp, Piano sounds like Teddy Wilson to me, Barney Kessel, definite swing era drummer and trumpet. Buck Clayton, Krupa? 15. Errol Garner 16. Up Blues Interesting writing. First horn sounds like a fleugle, than a trumpet
  3. What I've heard sounds very ragtimey. Hard to describe, but it's not early jazz "yet". Maybe an apt analogy would be Scott Joplin progressing to James P. Johnson.
  4. Got mine this afternoon.
  5. The essential 25 are well chosen, Augustin. Sure, a different group of people might have chosen a small percentage of different discs, but that really doesn't invalidate these.
  6. Welcome back, Congratulations, and ...hop in !
  7. I like it !
  8. Thanks Kevin and everyone. The cell my friend gave me is a Verizon and I don' think it is real old. I guess my best bet is to stop by a Verizon store and see what they tell me.
  9. Same here.
  10. My answer varies based on when the mataerial was recorded. I like 78 era recordings with the alternates following the master and I like lp era recordings to follow the lp sequence and put alternates and bonus takes at the end.
  11. R.I.P. Jack. DEEP has pointed out that Jack Lesberg is probably the last of the Condon guys. BTW - Jack Lesberg takes a very nice solo on Wild Bill Davison's Commodore recording of "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams".
  12. Thanks, GA.
  13. Also BRAFF ! was available on cd.
  14. CAT MEETS CHICK is on a Jimmy Rushing Collectables along with THE JAZZ ODDYSEY OF JIMMY RUSHING. I think BACK IN BEANS BAG and BEN AND SWEETS was also available as a twofer.
  15. I've hardly entered the cell phone era yet, so I have to plead ignorance when it comes to cell phones. The other day a friend of mine gave me a cell phone she had replaced with a newer model. Can I bring this to a store and have it reprogramed with a new number ?
  16. If you can get these....get 'em. The great material far outweighs the not as interesting things and this will NEVER be reissued in as complete a form again. In some cases there are not only alternate takes but 3rd and 4th alternates.
  17. Happy New Year Everyone.
  18. Yeah. I think so too...for this country and for all of us who are not of the priveleged (wealthy and connected) class. In this thread we haven't even touched upon social issues of race and class that is another sympton of these times. We don't touch those issues anymore. My opinion ? The best America had to offer was the Liberalism of the 60s (Liberalism is a POSITIVE thing. It is FREE thinking - not what conservatives vilify as bleeding heart, etc). Conservatives since then have been battling to stifle Liberal thinking and to undo the social programs of the 60s and before...actually to undo Roosevelt's NEW DEAL. In reality we need another NEW DEAL.
  19. It's depressing that George Wallace's mesage is an example of one that is still being propagated. There were so many more positive messages in the 60s.
  20. I haven't seen the video , but I was there for the original. MartyJazz makes a good point about the draft and the lack of demonstrations and involvement from the public today. It seems the social concsiousneess in the 60s was a lot more acute. Opposition to the war in Iraq seem tame and lame in comparison to opposition to the war in Nam. I think the corporate takeover of the media is one cause of this. The Liberal media may have been a factor in the 60s, but todays media is anything but Liberal. Corporate ownership of the Networks has resulted in a sanitized version of news reporting that really amounts to de facto (how's that for a 60s word?) censorship. Example: No real battle footage from Iraq, no body bags in Iraq OR New Orleans (very revealing). The lack of talk shows that are anything other than conservative republican shill productions or book and movie promos is another obvious factor.
  21. Gave a listen today to disc one. Sounds good to me, an improvement over the last Rounder "music only" set. Still, it would have been nice to see what Mosaic or the late John RT Davies could have done. Did John RT do the Swaggie lps that have been mentioned previously on this thread ? In any event there is no reason for anyone to NOT get this set becase of the sound. The content is wonderful. I was completely absorbed in it. Jelly is a raconteur supreme. There was not one uninteresting moment. I'm looking forward to a lot of enjoyment from this set.
  22. I really had to hit NULL. I'm enjoying both releases and I'm glad to have both of them.
  23. ....by Billie Holiday is one swingin' side ! I had disc one from the Billie Columbia box on the car stereo today. I've been familiar with this rendition since the days of vinyl, but today it just really all came back. This is ONE SWINGIN' SIDE ! Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Joe Bushkin, Cozy Cole and Pete Peterson all are kickin' behind Billie...and on the strength of this record Pete Peterson can walk his ass off ! Billie is in strong voice - a little hoarseness adding to the effect. She's singing on the beat and swingin' to beat the band. "Swing Song" indeed !
  24. Happy Birthday Upright Bill..and MANY MANY MORE !
  25. This one hits me a little more than usual. I didn't know Steve well, but I DID know him and have done several gigs with him. He was a great player, was A LOT of fun to work with - he had a great sense of humor, and I enjoyed every gig I worked with him. Those of you familiar with the Sinatra/Buddy Rich video - I think it was called "Concert For The Americas" - That's Steve and Andy Fusco on camera behind Sinatra throughout most of that video.
