  1. I had the good fortune to do several gigs with Jimmy. He was one helluva saxophonist! Too bad he's so underecorded. I don't have anything on record by him. I saw him in a group with Big John and guitarist Geary Moore around 1987 or so.
  2. Dizzy liked Fender Bass also and so did Hamp. Last year I saw Bob Cranshaw playing an electric upright that sounded absolutely incredible. BTW, Ron Carter is playing Fender on SUGAR.
  3. Happy Holidays, Dan. All the best.
  4. Chris said: "1-12: AAARRGGGHHHHHHH. I'll probably get flayed alive for saying so, but this precisely the kind of music that I am convinced 99% of people listen to just so others can hear them listening to it and presume they are really hip. I'd sincerely like to get to the point that I can understand what is going on here and why it matters... give me the previous track any day." IMHO - this track has to be taken in context with the preceeding track. I think one of the points of this is that we have similar effects being used on recordings that are WIDELY seperated by time and the perceptions of the listener. Tr 11 is from the dawn of recorded Jazz and may not be considered jazz by some listeners, while tr 12 is more recent (when? - I dunno) and might be considered avant garde and ALSO may not be considered jazz by all listeners.
  5. I guess we have different sources Jim. Mine was Chilton's Who's Who. yours was the notes on the cd? I wonder which was right. Whoever it was - there's a story of a drummer doing a record date with Jelly Roll Morton and Jelly giving the guy a hard time. The guy pulled a pistol out and announced he was the guy who iced Jim Europe. For once Jelly was quiet for the rest of the date.
  6. >>BTW: HE WAS NOT THE SNARE DRUMMER WHO MURDERED EUROPE.<< Private Herbert Wright was the culprit.
  7. ....which is another way of saying...."it aint the instrument - it's the player!"
  8. The electric bass and the upright are both valid instruments. The elctric gets a bum rap but it's capable of a wide variety of sounds that can work in all types of music. I think a large part of the bad rap is that many electric players aren't good jazz players and the instument gets the blame for the limitations of these players.
  9. Great photos Chris ! And a great idea for a thread.
  10. Wet or dry, I think the mix will be cool. DEEP's got the ears.
  11. Hey Jim...regarding disc 2-3, as I posted previously I have it. I bought it on vinyl when it came out and there is no personel given. Ive never seen the cd release and I'm wondering if they give a personel. I'd bet my socks that it's Chuck Rainey on bass - not Jamerson.
  12. Nothing like a quickie to start the day !
  13. >>"Bud Freeman, oh, my... I've never been influenced by Bud Freeman" - Young << I know Pres said that, but I've always found it hard to believe that there was no influence there. I think there had to be some influence and that Pres either didn't realize it himself or was being disingenous. Particularly that one note rhythmic thing common to both players. I'm editing this to say " hard to accept at face value" rather than "hard to believe".
  14. Hey Phil...Happy Birthday !
  15. ....And no FILIBUSTERING !
  16. Suggestion : Maybe the solutions shouldn't be revealed until a set time passes without a post on the discussion thread...say 24 hrs or 48 hrs - whatever. The "Disc Master" can have the answers ready at his convenience - announce the time limit - and then keep it on his "notepad" ready to go.
  17. Yeah Lon...the Circle label stuff sounds great as does the Fats stuff Eke mentioned.
  18. Yeah..a lot of them sound better than the corresponding commercial releases. I'm curious as to why that is? What were they doing different from the studios used by the record companies? And weren't they sometimes the same studios?
  19. Mike...Is there a Fender Bass on the Moody Hip Organ Trio album?
  20. HAPPY BIRTHDAY !
  21. Emoclew drarba Selim !
  22. I checked out the MEAT. I thought I had all the JB I needed. I mean I've got a ton of vinyl and a bunch of cd's. Most of it is pre 1970. But this thread has made me realize there are a few absolutely killer sides that I missed. (Followed by a vision of $$$ signs flying out the window). SANGREY - YOUR COSTING ME MONEY !!!!
  23. ARM - It's not impossible that it's his band at a later date - but I have a feeling it's not. One reason - NO Eric Gale, who was an almost permanent fixture with that band from the mid 60s thru the early 70s, at least.
  24. Yes ...with Chico. Did you gig around here ?
  25. ARM - I think the one you're talking about is chronologically to early.
