  1. I dig JATP. It's blowing by some of the greatest names in the pantheon of Jazz...What's there not to dig?
  2. My sentiments exactly. Wonderful music !
  3. Also, for some sideman stuff, check out BENNY GOODMAN ON THE AIR 1937-38. This is a 2 disc set on Columbia. It may be OOP but it shouldn't be hard to find at all. I still see it from time to time. Harry is KILLIN' on this stuff and the so is the band. Harry is heavily featured. IMHO This is as good as the Carnegie Hall (which is to say VERY VERY GOOD) and should recieve equal attention. Harry James playing is hot and he had complete technical command of his horn.
  4. Harry's first Chronogical Classic 1937-1939 contains some great sides. I assume they're Harry's earliest as a leader and the band is pretty much Basie cats. Buck Clayton, Herschel Evans, etc. Subsequent sessions included in this disc are a mix of Basie, Goodman. and even Harry Carney from Duke's band. Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson show. It's allstar stuff and a great debut as a leader.
  5. The Hamp cd is a gas. Hamp could "swing you into bad health" as the saying goes. I've been digging the Verve Quartet sides too. Killer stuff. For more on Combelle, check out the "Coleman Hawkins All Star Jam Band" date, a 1937 date available on a number of cds. including Classics. Bean, Combelle, Benny Carter and another French Saxophonist whose name escapes me at the moment. Django's on board too, and among other things, they do a classic "Out Of Nowhere". GREAT SESSION !
  6. I guess I have what was the first side of the 45 - "THERE IT IS - PT 1 on the JB STARTIME set. It's a burner for sure. Just one Wurlitzer (definitely) chorus. Saxes are groovin'! I wonder if the recording date can ever be pinned down - I have a feeling it's earlier than the 1972 date given in the box . Don't know for sure -but it sounds like that to me. Two notes on the bass...and he's killin' them!
  7. Happy Birthday Dan - and many, many more.
  8. Well...I can't name it, but it sounds a lot like something my junior high school music appreciation teacher played in class one day (in 58 or 59) as an example of where the music of the future was going. I thought to myself...... YEAH ...RIGHT.
  9. Curious. Most of Gator's recordings have Yusef but there are a few that don't. He smokes. Great feel.
  10. Jim, is that Yusef Ali/Joe Hadrick on that SOUL NIGHT LIVE lp?
  11. I agree 100% ! THAT's an organ group! For those of you that haven't heard it , check out the "Live" date at the Front room in Newark (on Prestige). That version of ROCK CANDY has got to be a classic, UNDECIDED also...and thos are just two examples. The whole thing burns.
  12. Nothing like starting the day off with a laugh! Good joke Ken.
  13. my experience with Sony cdrs is almost identical to NOJ's - about 10 or 15 in a 50 pack were unusable. I've also had trouble with Sony Disc Man players. They sound fine but often stop reading the cd - usually toward the end - and they skip. The same discs play flawlessly on another (Panosonic) Discman I have. I've had two Sony players that act like that.
  14. I'm beginning to wonder if AAJ is down for the count.
  15. Ditto. I deleted them, suspecting they were bogus, and figured ebay would let me know if there was a problem when I tried to bid on something.
  16. Congratulations! Great news!
  17. Yeah Mule..that's a good one.
  18. Well, there's a fair amount of JATP stuff on the old box, but I think some new things got unearthed afterwards. The Jam Session is definitely on there - BETTER be, you can't have Bird on Verve w/o "Funky Blues"! The MAIN omission, now that I get the thing out and look at it, is the session w/Machito, and that's just wrong. Don't know how THAT happened. John, I got your PM, btw. Thanks! I dug out my lps too to take a gander - I just didn't remember that stuff being on there! Turns out I had the 6 lp set "THE VERVE YEARS". Three twofers. It's an American Verve set with a 1976 copyright on it.
  19. I love this album. The entire band sounds great and, as Chuck pointed out, Ruby Braff is GREAT on this. It was hearing Ruby on this that spurred me on to obtaining a lot of Ruby. This recording is indicative of this crew of jazzmen and their associates who had a swingin', mainstream approach typical of the the New York guys who were often thought of as Dixielanders. In actuality they were Swing era guys who just played their own bag and retained the opening and closing ensemble approach typified by Dixieland. What are the two additional tracks? I have this on Vinyl in addition to CD and I remember two tracks were left off the cd issue. Are those the ones?
  20. As a pianist/guitarist Ike sounds fine. His "Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm" recordings from the 50s are truly greasy indeed and are considered to be precursors to Rock and Roll. They're available on a number of configurations. I have mine on a Rhino compilation called I LIKE IKE. The Ike and Tina's revue records from the early 60s are a treat too. There were three (at least) lps recorded live in Texas that are absolutely SMOKIN'. They were on Kent, Loma and Warner Bros respectively. The Studio recordings on Sue are better known, but I dig those live records.
  21. Jim - the sound on the cd box is noticebly better than the lp set. Some of the missing material is the JATP stuff and the JAM SESSION with Benny Carter and Johnny Hodges.
  22. I'll second John B.
  23. Tony, You can't go wrong with this one - the sound is fine and even if it's improved sometime in the future who knows when they'll reissue it in it's entirety again. With Bird, alternate takes are always different and always absorbing listening. you're not going to regret this purchase. BTW - BIRD WITH STRINGS is absolutley GREAT.
  24. SCREAMIN' is a great McDuff album - actually the first I bought by MAC in the early 60s. AFTER HOURS- drawbars all the way in and percussion on.
  25. I definitely have a preference for the clean guitar sound - the traditional sound... and when it comes to keyboards and their usefulness for my purposes I always have 2 questions: Does it get a good piano sound and does it get a good B3 sound? Having said that - I DO think it's possible for someone using other synth sounds or a non-traditional guitar sound or a Rock sound play something of interest to me...it just doesn't happen as often. ...and I too dig the hell out of Hendrix.
