  1. Lots of Atlantic, Collectables, Laserlight and odd stuff. If you can't find 5 items in the 5 for $25 collection... 4 disc sets of Bud, Clifford, Anita, Cab, Basie... Some Keith Jarrett (Life Between the Exit Signs), Willis Jackson, Yusef, Bo Diddley, Bessie, Sonny/Brownie, Grassella Oliphant, Eddie Harris, TLIghnin', Elmore, Trane, Cozy Cole, Cootie, McGriff, Mingus, Bonner, Tolliver, Moody, 5X5, Big Bill, Phineas, Ace Cannon, and some utter dreck and scary labels. (And that's just the 5/$25 stuff.) Books, boxes and DVDs too. 172 Jazz LPs. Reasonable shipping - free over $50. No tax, except in Pennsylvania. Sorry, shipping costs will kill those outside the US. This is NOT an endorsement. My order ain't showed up yet. (Just placed the order.)
  2. for those who don't know the story, here's an excerpt from an interview in the May 2003 issue of Straight No Chaser: SNC: Was there a particular experience in you life that caused you to embrace the faith [buddhism]? WS: When our daughter [iska] was born she had some immunisation shots and six hours after she had them we saw that in her cot she was jerking. We found out later she had brain damage. As time went on, while I was out on the road, I would hear that my wife had to drive my daughter to the hospital because my daughter would have seizures, this happened many, many times. Herbie Hancock’s daughter was born around the same time and Herbie’s wife and daughter and my wife and daughter would be together some times when the seizures started. Herbie’s daughter was vaccinated by the same doctor's office. Sincere apologies. I had no idea...
  3. I wouldn't disagree, particularly on the education side of things. I'd use the term 'moribund' to describe the art as it rests in the hands of the Lincoln Center clan. Fortunately, as I recall, not everything on the concert docket this year is entirely retrogressive...though I don't have the listing in front of me. Perhaps I'm just optimistic.
  4. Anyone attending the 2007 festivities? I hope to be back in NYC by the start.
  5. Yeah, who's Iska and what Odyseey is she on? Sounds like one of those movies...
  6. New York Press? Isn't that one of those 'swingers' newspapers?
  7. I'd agree, but add that I don't like playing 'church' services; too LITTLE noise (generalizing).
  8. I played 'gentlemens' clubs' for a while ...way back when... Fortunately, I haven't had to lately.
  9. Another early purchase was the three-LP "Other Side of the Blue Note 1500 Series". Nice stuff.
  10. I'm not qualified to answer, but here's a good place to look/pose question: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdispla...ne=10&f=489
  11. Count Basie and Bird. Anything else is icing. (Okay, Coltrane, pre-war Satchmo, and Kraftwerk make five.)
  12. The Monk was the first I remember vividly. Before that, some Time-Life boxes, Smithsonian, Worlds Greatest Music and, what were those things called - three-LP sets in the burgundy boxes? Oh yeah, and the old JATP concerts on 78.
  13. Update: Big B's appears to be out of business. The Towers are, of course gone. Several of the Record City's have closed too; three left, I think. Zia's is on the up-swing.
  14. Thanks for the article. A reminder I needed. Next time I see my books, I've going to grab one of Vian's to carry and read through the following leg of my travels.
  15. I'll second Lon's "write more". I hope to keep my CD/LP/Whatever buying in 2007 at the same level as 2006: fewer than four. I even passed up a sealed Complete John Coltrane '61 box for $19 today. (Obviously, it's still on my mind...) I'd say 'read more', but that doesn't seem possible. It's been every-free-moment lately, including 350,000 miles on planes.
  16. I'm singing "I'll (Not) Be Home For Christmas". Stranded.
  17. I can only echo all those Wardell recommendations. And Teddy. I also really like the Central Avenue Sounds box (and book). Not all jazz, and not all the era in which you're interested, but nice stuff and good presentation.
  18. **humming "One of these things is not like the others"** Agreed. Guatemala would be hard to lump in with the rest of those "Third World" places. To be fair, I liked all those places. Not everywhere I went, I liked.

  20. As always, I was on the road 365 days. I seldom have the 'luxury' of being able to take recorded music with me, so, for me, I mainly listened to live, 'local' music wherever I was - Yemen, Albania, Macedonia, Guatemala, Djibouti, Des Moines...
  21. All the best!
  22. http://www.sysqs.com/searchstore.php?type=...&srchdesc=y Some pretty good prices, especially on popular stuff (Kind of Blue, Giant Steps...) Haven't explored shipping costs, in full, but they look pretty high.
  23. So, what happened to the auction? No items currently listed for this seller. Nothing shown as sold since 28 November
  24. Tomorrow only, 40% off a book. $20 or more. http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/couponbook50_1212.htm
  25. I'm headed for the interstate right now. Gonna pick me up a set at the Outlet Stores.
