  1. I haven't been to South California in about eight months, but I spent a considerable portion of 2005 there, commuting between Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills. Deja vu. And sometimes, I'd pick up some TV show broadcasting around 87.9
  2. Get well soon, Mr. Conn.
  3. Timing. I've been offline for a few weeks. I'm back now to cast a vote for the developing world. (Okay, since I spend so much of my time in the developing world, it's really MY vote, but, you catch my drift.) The greatest advance is the cell phone. Twenty years ago, a large majority of the people on earth had never seen or used a phone. (I've seen statistics, but wouldn't want to try to recall from memory.) If there was sickness, a natural disaster, whatever, well, they were SOL. (And that includes me personally.) Now, whether it's cell or sat(tellite), by golly, help can at least be summoned. And, on a more mundane level, people can simply keep in touch. As for the internet/web, well, I haven't had access for twenty days. Lotta good it would have done me if I'd needed it. But I didn't. A telephone (though I didn't use one of those either) would have been far more useful. To the extent the 'net reaches the furthest and poorest outposts, it'll almost certainly be 'cellular' or sat communications.
  4. Background: I'm a geezer. Old. I do like having some physical form for my music. But still, the music is the most important part. Hence, I've been able to live with CDs - a less than ideal presentation of the music - because so much of what I want to hear isn't available on LP. (Of course, there's a considerable amount of music in the reverse situation). To the extent that the world moves toward more and more compression/lower sample rates/poorer sound quality, I'm going to think of CDs as the best source for sound in the digital realm. Unless, by some miracle, SACD or DVD-Audio prove viable. It would be great to see lossless downloads, but until then, the CD's my (relatively lossless) format of choice.
  5. Maybe Rudy VanGelder took them to remaster. Well, if all else fails, call Michael Cuscuna.
  6. I was a charter subscriber, and I too was worried about when another issue would hit. Something to look forward to when I get to the States.
  7. The way society is going, I'd guess it would be anyone who did sensational things or lived a sensational life. So, perhaps Bird will be remembered more more his early demise and drug problems, Miles for his outrageous persona, Frank Rosolino, Lee Morgan... I just think that image will (continue to) trump contributions to the culture in Joe Six Pack's mind. That's why Joe today knows Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, Tommy Lee, and a host of "movie stars", but hardly anyone of cultural merit. Sorry, I'm more cynical than usual today.
  8. The trend seems to be toward lower sound quality and diminished interest in quality reproduction, less interest in physical manifestations (CDs versus downloads), somewhat less interest in analog (…though not dramatically less than five years ago, it seems to me). I’m pleased to be able to purchase LPs and digital recording that have at least as much resolution as the Red Book standard provides. I’m fearful, however, that the CDs I own may be the end of the line in terms of quality sound in the digital era. SACD and DVD-Audio don’t seem to be taking hold in the market – aside from a niche. So, do I go nuts and buy the Complete Coltrane Prestige sessions today, expecting never to be able to get a better product in the future? (I’m assuming that they won’t find any more Trane on Prestige, in my example.) Will one of the higher resolution formats catch on? And, if so, will it hold any improvement for existing analog or digital recordings, or will it only be useful for newly recorded music that takes full advantage of its ‘capacity’? What’s your crystal ball say? Mine’s murky, but, then again, it’s low-res digital. Here’s hoping those CDs don’t rot.

  11. A bad sign, methinks. Another one-day sale, same as yesterday. (Cash flow, cash flow, cash flow...)
  12. Thanks for the info and link. Is there a place that lists the contents of back issues, either at CODA or elsewhere? (I suspect I could find what I want through MELVYL or some other library source, but...)

  14. Here I must apologise. My understanding of American/Western culture is not so good. I'm not sure I could think of anything inappropriate to say. I think prostitution is one of those things very local/specific. I'll save my doomed attempts at levity for another thread. Not "Funny Rat", though.
  15. Sorry my answer wasn't in keeping with the general levity of this thread. But the link I provided is useful.
  16. Same problem here. Items in my shopping cart from yesterday have become unavailable. Sorry, this title is not currently available. We do not know when this title will be available to order.
  17. Wishing you all the swellest!
  18. Forgive the cross post to that other boards, but it's useful info. http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=14886
  19. In my youth, I was that guy. Fortunately, I gave it up before eBay came along. Edited to add: The other killer is going out nd buting YET ANOTHER copy of a recording to have the alternate takes, even when you know the alternates won't be materially different from the master, give or take a breakdown.
  20. Alternative response: I said LON, not RON! BTW, Lon, if you happen to look in here, sorry 'bout using your name. But when one wants credibility...
  21. Yes, I do believe that one has FungusShield protection.
  22. Yes. By all means you should buy it. Right away. I mean, it’s out-of-print and import only. Not yet? Well, it will be. Then you’ll have to buy it on eBay. I saw one the other day at the Jazz Record Center for $175, and there were a couple of guys fighting over it. Not surprising, it’s some of the artist’s best work; I can say that, because I’ve got it all. Definitely great stuff. It’s on my desert island list and Lon thinks its great too. I heard he hocked his amp – you know that funny low-powered thing – to get his copy. He sold his car to get a duplicate – back-up, just in case. Wise man. These aren’t easy to come by. And there’s some dispute with the artist’s estate so they can’t reissue it. Even the guys in Andorra. And if they did, it’d have that new FungusShield copy protection… you know, the one that transmits all your porn surfing history and pharma orders directly to the Oval Office? You still there? D*mn, you oughta be at the record store by now. It’s probably gone. Picked up by the cat who’s going to post it to eBay because he doesn’t care anything about music, but knows it’s going to bring the big money. Your spouse? Heck, your spouse knows how much you love music. Like you’re going to break up over one recording. Who wears the pants around there anyway?
  23. Anyone else ordered late on the 12th/early on the 13th that hasn't heard a word from Concord? More curious than worried.
  24. I've got both of these albums (lucky me!) and enjoy them both. Wish I had more Rein DeGraff, particularly in a trio setting. Like Drifting on a Reed, with Henk Haverhoek or Roger Cooke and Leroy Williams or Eric Ineke. (Timeless 1976)
  25. Thank you. What is 2001?
