  1. I've got about a billion Basie recordings, but this is where I'd start.
  2. Just thought I'd put this thread back into the public eye. Kraftwerk is on my mind, not to mention in my CD player.
  3. I wish I had the newspaper at-hand, but... I read yesterday that the iPod doesn't accept music downloaded from the new better-sound-quality (less heavily compressed) on-line sources.
  4. Not on this order. On your NEXT order. Sheesh!! Sorry, I don't read the fine print on offers I have no intention of taking advantage of!
  5. That's 15% PLUS free shipping to you pal!
  6. Side salad and baked potato. Oh yeah.
  7. The only healthy thing at Quizno's (unless you're worried about sodium, or you overdo it on the honey mustard dressing or BBQ sauce); I like it too.
  8. Not a great deal. but if you're ordering anyway... Exclusive Online Only Offer For Preferred Tower.com Customers As a way of showing our thanks, we're giving you our best employee perk with none of the work! 9. McDonalds gets a bad rap, and, worse yet, no credit for trying. They offer healthy choices - McLean, McVeggie - and people turn up their noses. There are still some healthy options on the menu - salads of various sorts, some low fat/low cal chicken sandwiches, breakfast pancakes and the willingness to make anything the way customers order. Low-fat dressings, no dressing, hold the mayo... Take a look at nutritional information for Denny's, Quiznos, Applebees, Olive Garden or any pizza joint and tell me how much healthier these places are. And don't get me started on vegetarian, Indian, Chinese...
  10. 25% off on a book through 2/12. http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/book0209.htm No, it's not a CD. Get over it. Books are good too. BTW, CDs are still "Buy Three and Get One Free" (no coupon) all month.
  11. I'm happy with mine, but to be honest, I've never owned any other brand. I'm kinda anti-iPod (or anything else ultra-trendy), but if you've checked out the alternatives and like the iPod best, by all means, that's the way to go.
  12. Break free! Creative Labs.
  13. 20% off a book until 2/5 http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/book_020206.htm Same deal on a DVD http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/dvd0_20206.htm
  14. Having given it a bit more thought, I'd say you're right. Heading West from JLS isn't something I'd do. And hanging out at 13th/14th and Broadway other than at mid-day might not get you killed/robbed, but it might well get you hassled. I'm pretty immune to hassles, but not everyone is. My bottom line advice: do enjoy Oakland. Don't worry too much, but do worry enough.
  15. Interesting. I grew up in (probably) Oakland's worst neighborhood and went to (almost certainly) its roughest high school. I've never for a minute felt unsafe or threatened. And Jack London Square.....?
  16. Expiration date would seem to cover next month's RVGs. That's cool.
  17. Just curious, why Butch Miles?
  18. While I focused on Pres, that's kind of a micro-level review. Hawk not only contributed greatly to the post-swing evolution to modern jazz, it could be argued that he is the raison d'etre behind the sucess of the saxophone as a featured jazz instrument. (I realize that arguments to the contrary could also be made, but let's give the man his due!) Pres influenced whole generation of players who, in turn, influenced a whole generation beyond.
  19. Mainly Ramadan experience for me, though, in my younger days, I often did two-day fasts in connection with sleep deprivation in as part of athletic training. From a health standpoint - based on the things I've read lately - the trend seems to be toward reduced caloric intake over a lifetime, as opposed to fasting for brief periods. I'm not suggesting that I have any scientific expertise here.
  20. I've never had much appreciation for this comic strip. I suspect the problem is that I'm either looking too deep, or not deep enough. Still, I read it from time to time and I appreciate this posting.
  21. If there hadn't been a Pres, about half of the saxophone players out there (since, say 1943) wouldn't exist. At least not playing like they do/did: Zoot, Getz, Wardell, Eager, PQ and a whole 'next generation'.
  22. 25% through 29 January Book: http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/book0125.htm CD: http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/cd0125.htm
  23. http://charlesmcneal.com/WebPatterns.htm
  24. Anyone ever 'dropped in' in Stamford? (...not that it's going to save enough money to pay for the trip...)
  25. Agree. I suppose some Bay Arean who finds a used Select at Amoeba, and who has one of the ubiquitous $2 coupons in hand, night save a couple of bucks over a new set from Mosaic. But even that doesn't seem like a deal. Best bet: order all your Mosaic stuff in one big order. Lower shipping per item.
