  1. Just received first (and last - it was a test) lala transaction. Received a poor condition, cutout. Another thing to consider: you won't receive a jewel case with your CD. This is a consideration if you are acquiring a Collectors Choice (white spine), Conn (clear spine) or 32 Jazz-type recording (liner notes incorporated into case). I suppose this is a fine service for people who don't care about physical possession of their music, people who want to burn and trade or others with what I consider low standards.
  2. Since when does anyone around here have class?
  3. Did you say "hearing loss"?
  4. Free! Have a grrrrreat one!
  5. I suppose I can live without the 'new' avatar, and all those counted posts since last year. But holy smokes, I've got 300 pages of New Posts to read!
  6. Another 'wrinkle', from my experience, is that the items I looked at showed only one version. It wasn't possible to distinguish between, for example, an RVG and a non-RVG, or a Black Lion and a 1201 Music, or a domestic and an import.
  7. The cost is pretty reasonable. And, of course, the population with which to trade could be substantial. But you don't do business with any one, known person. It's a black box. I don't trade much, so I'm happy to do it among friends. Anyway, I checked into lala more as a phenomenon than as something that REALLY interested me.
  8. Why is that? I only own (and hence would only be 'trading') legitimate, purchased, non-promo, non-cutout, non-record club, non-CD-R, royalty-paid, non-Andorran, mint condition CDs*. I've absolutely no assurance of receiving the same in return and I've no desire to 'foul' my collection with such rancid trash. * Exception rate < 0.1%
  9. If you give them your e-mail address to 'keep in touch' (aka "I'm interested"), they'll send you an invite. I got mine in about a day. I'm not interested in the service, now that I've experienced it first-hand.

  11. Have a great one!
  12. Clubhouse. So who wants to buy my copy of Clubhouse? (Only kidding; not for sale. )
  13. I wish I'd found a better word than worship. (That's why I stuck it in quotes.) The congregation seemed to place Mr. Coltrane on a level above Man. From my perspective, he was a man. Good, bad, exemplary or otherwise.
  14. I've been, but I've little compare it to. Music - some decidedly susbstandard but enthusiastic - was a big part of the service, but so were the traditional religious teachings. The 'worship" of Coltrane as a figure beyond the one which I see in my own mind made the whole experience a little other-worldly.
  15. Yeah, but looked what happened to this cat: made him Dizzy.
  16. I'd rather be talking Cecil Taylor than this sale!
  17. For example, a small bunch of Blue Notes under $9.99. Same with Verve. And OJC. Yawn. I suppose the upside is that (they claim) every CD is on sale.

  19. I thought I was doing pretty well with only one sick day (hospitalized after being hit by a car) in 22 years... My "grandfather" was like this guy. Ultimately had a heart attack at his desk, after a good, long, healthy and happy life. The way he would have wanted to go.
  20. In honor of its three-year anniversary, I thought I'd pop this thread back into the public view. Travel remains the major part of my life. Yes, it's even displaced music. (It's not possible to take and enjoy music with my travel schedule/itinerary.) My primary interest in off-the-beaten-path destinations, but I'll go anywhere (...other than a half-dozen places that don't interest me; naming/debating them would only get me off on a negative tangent). But I'd rather hear about your experiences anyway. Someone mentioned pictures. I suppose if anyone wants to post pics, that's cool. (I usually only have a dial-up connection, so pictures are a no-go 'round here.) As for me, I've no camera. Other than the one in my head...and the film's gone foggy in the x-ray machine.
  21. I'll offer up a comment - not specific to your site, but possibly relevant anyway. It has to do with the way I shop. I tend to go to a site, start throwing stuff into the cart until I think I've seen everything of interest, then look at the cart and make some sort of determination whether the bundle of stuff is worth the total cash outlay. The key here is that I don't do an item-by-item evaluation, since I don't know what tax and shipping will be (on an unfamiliar site). I may whittle the cart contents a bit to see what happens to shipping and to total-value equation, but, in the end, I wind up abandoning lots of carts. This isn't really a reflection on the individual site and its offerings. It's just my way of shopping on the 'net. Obviously, this doesn't work in stores - need to re-shelve all that stuff. But it's a 'net shopping luxury.
  22. I went to the Detroit festival last year. As I recall, it had just been saved/ressurected by, among others, Mack Avenue Records. Beautiful weather, decent outdoor venue(s) and a wonderful lineup. Louis Smith, Charles McPherson, Randy Weston, McCoy Tyner, Fathead Newman, Ron Blake...dang, this is tough from memory. Anyway, worth checking out.
  23. ...if you're a member. I've quit posting coupons. Members get 'em (assume). The rest of us don't realize enough savings. Shame.
  24. And Lon, I'll bet that store misses you!
  25. ...and there aren't even many titles under $9.99. I'm not reaching for the AmEx.
