Wow, auto racing. Didn't know that was a sport So, what happened to Eddy Merckx?

For the most part, I agree - the bankruptcy hasn't been good for inventory. Still, I see something interesting from time to time...more often in New York (or even a relatively small town, like Davis or Chico, where things don't get picked over so quickly) than in SF.

Ten thou. Wow. You don't look a post over 7,500. -
Is there any place with, say a jazz festival, an interesting local celebration, or a lot of nudity and beer drinking? (Just kidding about the nudity and beer drinking.) I know the SF jazz festival will be finished before the holidays. NYC, of course, always has lots of music, but the prices are a bit high. And I spend about 16 weeks a year working there anyway. I suppose most of the country is distracted with the holidays (religious and New Years) and not thinking about the things that really matter.

I'll be in the US for about a week at year-end. I can really go anywhere. So, what's going in in your neighborhood? and how's the weather? (...not that weather is a big factor...) When there aren't any real constraints on location, I might as well optimize. Thanks for any input.

Worse yet when they don't know your size and brand. Nothing worse than too-tight briefs...especially when one is accustomed to boxers. -
As I understand it, it is no longer possible to ship items from the US to overseas destinations without giving a real name and address. At least that has been my experience.
-
I think the organizer should post an address and we should randomly and spontaneously send stuff. (No obligation; I imagine there will be plenty of stuff without compelling anyone.)

For some people, this would seem to be a supplemental benefit: it's a means by which to get another CD into the collection without worrying about spousal objections.

...CDs or books. If people want to go with gift certificates, I assume there would be some guidance as to amount/value. If we all give one another $15 gift certificates (for instance), what have we achieved, other than moving a bunch of money between pockets? Heck, we could PayPal each other $15. I'm for something more personal.

How 'bout using favorite CDs (presumably a purchased or duplicate copy - I'd rather not send/receive a CD-R) as a gift? I'm not hip to everyone's taste, but I could look over the recipient's posts and try to pick something appropriate. I suppose the hazard is sending someone a duplicate. One might minimize this possibility by picking something relatively obscure. I know this all received some discussion last year, but I thought I'd run it up the 2004 flagpole.

I haven't watched a television (or seen a movie) since the mid-seventies. (Obviously, I'm ignoring the accidental viewings I have while passing through the television section of a department store or walking through a sports bar...) Even prior to the mid-seventies, i didn't watch much - a few minutes a day. In answer to the anticipate-able question: I read and I listen and I see the world.

This is, indeed, a great recording. Hawes has many. And very few bad ones. Essential reading is his autobio, "Raise Up Off Me". More later...

I'm in town and had thought about attending for the pseudo-social aspect. (I don't buy anymore, so it's the perfect diversion for me.) Still thinking about it.

Hmmmm. No economists here, eh? When the original buyer purchases a CD, he/she obtains not only the physical CD, but also ownership rights enabling him/her to transfer ownership to another individual, with or without compensation. (This does not cover the ability to make copies or reproductions or derivatives from that orginal CD.) Any acquirer obtains similar rights. Consider this: What if the above were not true. What if any CD you purchased you either kept or discarded as worthless. Would you buy fewer CDs? An active secondary market helps artists, even if it does not generate direct, monetary compensation.

Enough threads on Manhattan already. How 'bout the other boroughs? (Throw in The Bronx and Staten Island, if there's anything worth saying.) Thanks. Bedford Ave area (5th to 11th, or so) seems to have some jazz appeal - record stores, book stores, venues with at least a hint of jazz.

I'd be the first to admit to the limitations of the 3" by 5" card. They were, of course, virtually the only option 35-plus years ago. They do, however, have two advantages. First, they are non-volatile. Well, I suppose there's fire. (the flip-side, is that they can't be backed up.) Second, I've got information on recordings from 10" disc, LP, 78, 8-track, cassette, unissued stuff... Clearly, if I had it to do over again... In terms of converting to digital media, think 10,000 LPs- and CDs-worth of stuff.

3" by 5" cards. I started with them 35 years ago (one per artist, with all sideman or leader appearances listed) and still use them today. Since I don't buy anymore recorded music, maintenance isn't an issue. Portability, however, is poor.

http://www.buy.com/retail/store.asp?loc=56...281&dcaid=17281 Limited selection, but not bad. Edit: Coupon for $5 of $30 order: http://www.buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=...073&dcaid=17073 (There's also a coupon out there for $300 and $500 orders, but I won't feed any buying frenzies.)

Thanks everyone for the contributions. Hopefully I'll be able to separate the serious from the less-so. A jazz discussion board would seem the second most unlikely place to look for answers (after the aforementioned mosque), but y'all came up with 'em. Again, thanks. I can now look forward to the event with reduced trepidation.

A friend is having a christening for her daughter. I'm - to say the least - not well-versed in the Christian religious thing. Help. Looking at cards, I can't tell whether the guest of honor is the child or the parent. (They seem to cut both ways.) And so I find myself wondering: what the heck as I supposed to be writing on the card? Something about having a gret, blessed life, it seems. I'd really like to keep my foot out of my mouth on this one. I've done a bunch of internet searches, but don't think I've found an answer. I could ask someone down at the local mosque(?) I repeat: help - anyone?
