Off topic: I got a printed (signed) copy of Wail from Jazz Record Center, NYC. I don't really like reading on my Kindle Fire.

Raleigh, Greensboro, Greenville, Charlotte, Charleston
BeBop replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Back to Charlotte, May 11-18. Aware of the websites Charlotte Viewpoint, Charlotte Culture Guide, Charlotte's Got a Lot. Perusing these. Won't have much time, but would like to do one thing - something - anything. Whatever. Meal is fine suggestion, but I'm strict vegetarian. Most veg options seem to be outside of Uptown area where I'm working. -
Disposing of the Accumulated Material Goods of One Life
BeBop replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
In this area, Goodwill and Salvation Army don't do any pick-ups. (Which is a problem, since I don't have a car.) And they won't take any furniture or, as you point out, electronic stuff. Once upon a time. I had the impression that shelters would take toiletries (unopened); lots of my traveling colleagues donated hotel shampoos and stuff. Now, it's a big "no". But thanks everyone for good ideas. Still exploring many of them. -
Almost missed the party. Happy Birthday, impossible!

Disposing of the Accumulated Material Goods of One Life
BeBop replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
On Lon's suggestion, I'm looking into consignment sellers for furniture and (better) clothing. On JSngry's suggestion, I'm exploring the limits of what they'll take (surprisingly low limits in this area - no used clothes, shoes or furniture; only full sets of matched kitchen stuff...) And the womens' shelters for selected items mentioned, but wow! are they picky! Nothing used, imperfect or touched by human hands...at least the first three placers I checked. Seems like no one has any space. Rents are high, no one has any money to buy. Interesting little side note: no one will touch Ikea furnishings. She had a pair of: -
I inherited a 47-year old woman’s worldly possessions and now need to dispose of them. Her family took the things easily convertible to cash; I have the rest. The woman would have probably wanted me to strike some sort of balance between converting a few things to cash (or cash equivalent, through tax deduction), and “doing good”. In summary, I have: 200 or so books (mainstream intelligent stuff: biographies of Lyndon Johnson, for example) Lots of shoes, worn once and back in original box (quality shoes, though family took the “brand new”) Some nicer clothes, though the best stuff is gone The contents of a kitchen – plates, tableware, glasses…and canned food, spices, packaged food DVDs and VCR tapes (like the books, mainstream but tending toward intelligent fare) Cassettes Moderate quality hi-fi/stereo stuff (NAD, Denon, Wharfdale) Living room furniture Tons of toiletries (probably destined for a local womens’ shelter) Bed, bedding, towels (another shelter item?) Futon and frame General computer stuff – printers, monitors, software General office stuff (paper, pens, clips, staplers) Phones, calculators, gadgets, cameras Toys and games Luggage, briefcases She bought good quality things. I’m overwhelmed physically (I have no place to store anything), financially (I’m paying for storage) and psychologically/emotionally. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Now in storage, these things aren’t where I can have a garage sale. Nor can I get them to a flea market/swap, other than as consignment items. And no, I'm not trying to sell this stuff here.

That time again. Another chorus of "Happy Birthday". Anyone know where Joe is/what he's doing these days? Looks like he drops by here once in a while, but doesn't post much.

Belated birthday wishes. Hope it was a good one.

And speaking of Herb Wong tributes and his radio show with Bob Houlehan, I just came across this: http://www.amazon.com/Young-At-Heart-Larry-Vuckovich/dp/B000QR3K4A "Lester People" is Jewkes' tune and arrangement, a tribute to Herb Wong's and Bob Houlehan's Sunday San Francisco KJAZ radio show, "The Heart of Jazz" -

All of them and many more are a part of "The Complete 1932-1940 Brunswick, Columbia, and Master Recordings of Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra," an unprecedented 11-CD set that compiles these recordings for the first, and quite possibly the last, time. There would be many more exceptional compositions in the years following, including his highly regarded suites and longer works, but the scope of our latest, lavish Mosaic collection is the period when Ellington would establish himself as the most important composer ever in jazz. For the audience, there can be an electric charge in the moment, hearing favorites in unfamiliar pairings. In retrospect rarely do you experience anything explosive. That was not the case in 1966 when Ella Fitzgerald met Duke Ellington, for the final time in their careers. Recording live to two-track stereo is no easy feat. The engineer has captured each instrument or voice with just the right microphone and equalization from the get-go. Even more challenging is capture the right balance among the many musicians to get the essence and clarity of the music. So it's a real pity that the engineer who did such a great job of recording Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington at the Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins, France has gone uncredited. From the original source tapes, the sound on these 180-gram LPs mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI in Camarillo is warm and brilliant. Click for Reviews, Info and Audio Clips -

For anyone who knows I'm "from Oakland" and studied music in Texas: Wasn't me. :-) ...but I can relate to the story. I mention the radio show with Bob Houlehan. Herb Wong was the polished presenter with all these high-minded thoughts. Bob Houlehan was the (equally) loveable "other guy" who sometimes struggled with the broadcast equipment or came up short trying to remember a name. -

His specific achievements aside (important though they were) he was always just a nice guy to me, when I was coming up. He taught me a lot. His enthusiasm for Woody Herman in particular was infectious. And his old radio programs with Bob Houlehan ("The only Lester Young show in the history of the universe", featuring Pres and disciples) were classic. I still have cassettes. Thanks, Dr. Herb. -
Considering your nick I am a bit surprised that in your "fudging" you excluded the heyday of bebop. For me, the greatest bebop happened in 1945 (and the preceding transition years). It may not have been at a fully-formed peak, but it was happening.

I'd posted this inquiry with two questions rattling around in my head: 1. How many people would pick anything post 1980s? (Steve Reynolds is always around to remind me there's still worthwhile stuff going on, even if we don't always hear ear-to-ear. Thanks for that.) 2. How many people would pick non-consecutive decades? For myself, I'd probably choose the 1940s and 1960s. If I could fudge a bit, I'd probably say 1935-1945 and 1959-1969. Fudging even more, I'd want to tack on the mid-20s... But non-consecutive. Reading posts around here, I suspected I wasn't alone. Jazz has had its births and rebirths/renaissances. Its golden eras. Here's hoping there's another.

Survey says one in 10 young people buy cassette tapes
BeBop replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The best thing about cassettes was the ability to easily produce mix tapes. I never found CDRs to be as easy. In part, that's because you end up dealing with the CD-RW versions (read-write) which are more expensive and more persnickety in computers. Or you've got to use some sort of software to compile and burn. Give me Maxell 90-minute cassette anyday.- 28 replies

Survey says one in 10 young people buy cassette tapes
BeBop replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Sounds like you missed the first rebirth, 1990. But the second began around 2011. Link I can't say I've seen brick and mortar stores focused on 8-tracks in the past decade or so, but they're often displayed prominently in the hipster botiques. (I use the term "hipster" pretty loosely. Beyond Brooklyn and Portland, I'm not sure what to call the people in Salt Lake City and Santa Cruz, Mendocino, Seattle...)- 28 replies

Thanks for all the responses already provided. I'll hold off just a little longer before I share my specific curiosity. But I'm finding this interesting.

BeBop replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, we had the 8-track renaissance, the rebirth of the LP...fixed-gear bikes, plaid shirts, beards, over-ear headphones, artisan whatever (buggy whips included, I imagine)... There seems to be no end to what hipsters can do. ;-)- 28 replies

This is just a curiosity for me. Decades are arbitrary and don't match up to musical developments/eras. And two is an arbitrary number. I'll be capricious and ask respondents to think in terms of "modern" music. (Yes, after the Council of Trent banned sequences in 1563, in Gregorian chants entered a period lasting up through the Editio Medicia in 1614...) So yes, a (early) pointless exercise...apart from my curiosity.

Thanks for the original link and thanks for lots of "favorites". I'd agree that most are great. I won't even attempt my own list, but it'd have to include some Hampton Hawes (as others have suggested). Maybe Blues for Bud. And I'd try to find room for some (admittedly less that prime era) Basie - probably Straight Ahead over Basie/Ellington, for SA's Sammy Nestico arrangements. Wes? Smokin' at the Half Note, Incredible Jazz Guitar (1960?), Full House, Boss Guitar? Can't go too far wrong...unless you start looking out to the A&M years (IMO).

Bright Moments is like hearing some music that ain't nobody else heard, and if they heard it they wouldn't even recognize that they heard it because they been hearing it all their life but they nutted on it, so when you hear it and you start popping your feet and jumping up and down they get mad because you're enjoying yourself but those are bright moments that they can't share with you because they don't know even how to go about listening to what you're listening to and when you try to tell them about it they don't know a damn thing about what you're talking about! Is there any other Bright Moments before we proceed on?
