  1. It's saddening to think how little time I've had for live music the past 25 years - the past six, in particular. So, over the full course of my listening history, I'd probably say Jessica Williams (as house pianist/regular performer at Keystone Korner), George Cables and headliners Dexter Gordon, Rahsaan Roland Kirk
  2. A fine choice. But ineligible- only CHOCOLATE bars. We interviewed candy experts and historians to determine which bars made the biggest impact on the chocolate-bar industry—and the world at large. So much for Abba Zabba
  3. I hope it's a GREAT one, John!
  4. Wishing you a very happy birthday, Hans!
  5. I am late to the party, but I too wish you a very happy birthday, Victor.
  6. I made the overnight trek from central Oregon to (near) Sacramento for a meeting. Coming down Sunrise Boulevard, I spot this - worthy of a doubletake. Link
  7. Just four votes. Hmmm. Fletcher Henderson James P. Johnson Elvin Jones Oscar Pettiford Hard to pass on several other "worthies", but some of them will be getting plenty of votes from other folks. It took six years to get Bud Powell "in"? Two years behind Gil Evans? Five behind Fats Waller?
  8. Fully snowed in now. Couldn't get to work today; still have to pay for the hotel where I'm trapped, so a net loss day for me.
  9. Keep a few things in mind: - As a frequent flyer (in the perception of the Chinese equivalent of the US's Transportation Security Administration - regardless of whether he actually FLEW), he would receive only "light security". In the US, we call it Pre-Check. (It used to be just for 200K miles a year fliers.) You don't unpack your bag (he probably didn't have one), you keep your belt and shoes on. No body scan. - Airline food is an entirely different thing than airline food, particularly for Asian airlines and in first class. It's good restaurant quality. Potentially three meals a day. I have no idea whether or not he did use a sleepbox, but he might have. (Airport description: Sleepboxes Conceptualized as a mini hotel, the Sleepboxes provide travelers with a place to rest and relax between journeys, offering all the essentials on a compact scale. Facilities include a full-size bed, power supply, WiFi, a foldable computer desk, LCD TV and others.) In travel, there are lots of schemes; this one isn't particularly clever or lucrative compared to many.
  10. Snow did come to Yachats, OR. 90 minutes for the 26 mile commute this morning...mainly because of whiteout lack of visibility. Listening to Organissimo Dedicated to keep me energized.
  11. What was it James Moody used to say about Big Wheels? Blessed are those that run around in circles for they shall be called big wheels! Well, whatever. You have a great birthday.
  12. Turning cold(er) on the Oregon coast and immediate inland areas. Expecting snow tonight...at the coast!
  13. I'm buying less and less over the years, down to just about zero, but ImportCDs has always been good or better to me. I had a couple of gift orders go wrong last year (manufacturer problem), and they really helpfully resolved everything with the gift recipients directly. Saved me much heartache and hassle.
  14. All my food must be non-GMO. Additionally, I’m lactose intolerant and eating only gluten-free, low-glycemic and naturally sweetened with honey from free-range bees (but low carb). It’s got to be cage-free and cruelty-free, sustainably harvested food purchased from unionized producers at a living wage. Obviously, local and organic are a must. And s-l-o-w, very slow. Damn I'm hungry. Disclaimer: I'm vegan*, which - on some level - is just as wacky. But I try like heck not to make it anyone else's problem. And, if consistency counts, my diet hasn't changed in 35 years: no fad-of-the-day. Anything in the produce aisle works. * Depending on how you define.
  15. In my business travels, I end up in big cities where I work more or less 'round the clock because everyone does OR in small cities/towns where I get a little break Sunday morning because people go to church or simply reserve family time. So I'm in Eugene this week. Friday, Ernie Watts is at Jazz Station, followed by George Colligan on Saturday. Shedd Institute of the Arts has Ken Peplowski on Friday and Boz Skaggs on Saturday. (Neither one of much interest to me, but interest-ing) The Hilton Hotel has a rotating jazz lineup too. And some place called Dalia and the Pizza Research Institute and MOe's Tavern. Unfortunately, I missed Bustin' Jeiber two days ago, for two bucks.
  16. The vocalist or the pianist? A few years ago, I made contact with a Buddy Greco fanatic. He had taken a bunch of Benny Goodman broadcasts and put them onto CD. I had all of it on vinyl, so I bought them as a shortcut (since my vinyl and turntable are in deep storage). Bought them for Wardell Gray. But this cat (seller) was really into Buddy Greco. When I was doing interviews for the WG biography I was working on, I went by his supper club, hoping to catch him for an interview.
  17. I'm pretty sure Sonny Igoe was 82, the last time I saw him play. Not the oldest, but I thought I'd tip my hat anyway.
  18. I used to be a Roland Kirk completist, so I've got all this on LP and do really enjoy most of it. I Talk With Spirits, as an all-flute outing, doesn't always "do it" for me.
  19. Damn. Bud was a big part of my life - of every jazz fan's life - when I was in the Bay Area. Playing, recording for broadcast, MCing or just being part of events. Check him out on Jessica Williams' "Notin' but the Truth" - a BeBop-recommended recording.
  20. As a very health-oriented, strict vegetarian/vegan, I have a lot of respect for McDonalds and all the experiements they had tried to get people to eat healthier - vegetarian and vegan "burgers", apples, carrots, lean beef (McLean), plain salads and a variety of other things outside the United States. The customers, on the other hand, have consistently resisted - forcefully - and so we end up where we are.
  21. I hope it's a great one. Happy Birthday!
  22. My wife began to understand - but never really accepted - that I would often get distracted in public places by the music. We would walk into a bookstore and she would notice I'm "spacing out" (I'm thinking: "Hey, it's Hank...)
  23. Homeless, I spend a heap of time in public spaces - mainly hotels and restaurants, a few malls/stores. There's at least one "Muzak"-type station that programs mainstream stuff, including a heap of Blue Note; they play it at a couple of hotels I frequent. I've asked who chooses the music and no one seems to know. They seem to be oblivious, like it's totally in the background. I suppose doing eight hour shifts five days a week to Horace, Donald, Lee...
  24. Hey, this is a jazz discussion forum. Squatty Roo, not squatty loo.
  25. I'd suggest "the young lady who works the morning shift at Ministerstwo Kawy, Warsaw", but that doesn't really answer the question.
