  1. Billy Root and Ziggy Vines. The name pairing always stuck with me. Good playing too.
  2. As a long-long-time subscriber to Skeptical Inquirer magazine and Skeptic magazine, a supporter of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, supporter of the James Randi Foundation, believer in science and ration, that'd be a "no".
  3. Kind of funny that record stores seem to be proliferating in some parts of the world, and struggling in others. I guess we need more hipsters...or to have them more widely disbursed.
  4. I wonder if there's a list of the 300 shops anywhere....... It's not 300, but there's a pretty good list at the RecordStoreDay website.
  5. I made it to Los Angeles (downtown). It still seems climate-controlled.
  6. Todays weather: climate controlled. I've been stranded in an airport 10 hours. Really not unusual, but today it left me time to post to the weather thread.
  7. Yeah, they've got the attracting woman part right. Every woman I borrow money from to support my saxo-horn plaing poverty seems attracted to me forever more.
  8. Happy Birthday, fasstrack! I hope it's a great one.
  9. Liked his music, but really enjoyed his advice column.
  10. Wishing you all the best!
  11. All the best, 2013!
  12. Cool thing about tunein/inradio is it's thousands of stations all over the world...not all good, of course. But a nice mix of radio and internet-only, including jazzradio.
  13. I used to listen quite a bit, but the advertising - same few ads over and over again - and confused programming - Roy Eldridge on the Hard Bop station? Really? - pushed me to better alternatives, like inradio/tunein.
  14. I wish I'd been there too. The incidental good news for me is that Oakland has a new jazz club. Yoshi's is fading, though less quickly than SF Yoshi's...but neither was ever strong outside the mainstream)
  15. San Jose Mercury review Just heard about this club in Uptown. (Haven't been to Oakland recently, but I've got family there.) Too late to catch this show. Did anyone make it? Comments? Link to club
  16. At SFO, we were getting all kinds of wacky info. At one point, it was announced that this was a cargo jet. Huh? All one had to do was look at the arrivals board... (they don't announce the arrival of cargo planes, of course)
  17. I hope it's a great one, Randy!
  18. I hope it's been a great one!
  19. I've struggled with this quite a bit. At this point, I realize I am not long for this world. I have no kids. No interested friends/relatives. And no need for the cash value. So I carry CDs and LPs with me (when I can) to concerts and give them to young people in attendance. I try to match up the featured artist and the giveaway recordings broadly by style. Obviously, I don't give away the performer's own recordings: bad taste and bad to compete with his/her CD sales.
  20. Some kinda weird news a little while ago, here at SFO. Five hours after the crash, sixty people are missing? How'd they lose sixty people? Why is this just coming out? Well, it is pretty chaotic...
  21. Two people apparently perished, with ten more sent to the hospital. For a plane load (Boeing 777) of 250+, it's good news, but sad for the dozen. As much as I fly (250000miles/400000km per year), I'm able to keep the safety of flying in good perspective.
  22. Agreed. As a coda: Here's Barry playing (and singing) his beautiful song "The Bird of Red and Gold." The lyric is his as well. Sums up his cosmology as well as anything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rT5RYPGd60 (Laughing out loud.) I'd bought that CD in Des Moines a few years ago, when I still carried a portable CD player. Popped it into the player now knowing what was coming. (I can't watch the YouTube from this computer, but, believe me, I can HEAR Harris as clear as yesterday.)
  23. Just gotta say, this is a great thread/dialogue. It's why I keep coming 'round this forum. A challenging question. A prompt helpful reply. A gentle correction. And everyone's (seemingly) happy. Restores my faith in life online.
