  1. When I started this thread, I didn't think anyone would be foolhardy enough to step forward as an expert on jazz, in its entirety (or any broad subject, for that matter). But I thought we might have some confessions/offers of expertise in selected areas (artists, periods of history, record labels...) That said, I'm glad to have self-identified experts - at least in a relative or limited sense - in "Egyptology, and a study of the origins of "Christianity" and religion in the ancient world, focusing on Gnosticism" and agricultural equipment.
  2. Wife, family, bier (assuming we are speaking of "beer") sounds good. On the other hand: bier /bi(ə)r/ Noun A movable frame on which a coffin or a corpse is placed before burial or cremation or on which it is carried to the grave
  3. Sorry to hear about the blog, but if it's making for a happier birthday, so be it. Have a great one!
  4. Hey, Hey, Happy Birthday!
  5. From discussions here, I know we have some people with considerable expertise in some topic of interest: an artist, a geographic area, an aspect of the music business... If you want to claim or admit to your expertise, I'd invite you to post it here, something like a reference thread. I don't really have any expertise (aside from being an old timer). I was once a Wardell Gray completist, so I've got a little knowledge here. And you?

    Freddie Gambrell

Kind of funny that this thread would come (back) to life when the Vinnie Riccitelli thread is active. I got the Gambrell/Ben Tucker LP about the same time I got the Riccitelli LP. Haven't heard either in YEARS.
  7. Agree on the "no big loss". If they couldn't make it with the vinyl fad in full bloom, apparently "the market" concurs. But what about the yogurt shop deal? (Earlier news of an outpost/counter/corner) in the yogurt shop that's moving in? Didn't work out? Pending? I haven't had 30 minutes to get down to the Village to check it out.
  8. Michel Roques and much of the output of Joe Harriott

    Vinnie Riccitelli

My record is the top version, but decidedly yellow in color. But the jacket has the 17 East 45th Street (three blocks from me as I write this) address. The text, as much as I can see, matches both examples. If someone is really interested, I could e-mail a photo.

    Vinnie Riccitelli

I've got that LP! Other than the connection to Westchester Workshop, I don't know a damn thing about the guy. I wish I could remember the circumstances under which I bought the LP. Seems like Riccitelli himself was involved, but it was a long time ago.
  11. I'm not sure I'll make it back to the Forums tomorrow, so I'll be a bit early in wishing Bright Moments a very happy birthday!
  12. And I gave up television, movies, video 35 years ago. I've never even seen cable tv. I'm glad your move away from television (and into the gym/Y!) Is still working for you, Jim.
  13. Happy Birthday! (Any friend of Jim's...)
  14. It's just called "Duets". (Arista Freedom 1904) Marion Brown / alto saxophone, clarinet, piano, percussion; Leo Smith (Sides 1 & 2 only) / trumpet, percussion; Elliott Schwartz (Sides 3 & 4 only) / piano, arp synthesizer, percussion, misc. Recorded: Sides 1 & 2: May 12, 1970 in Paris, France. Tracks: Centering [1:12] (Leo Smith), Njung-Lumumba Malcolm [18:05] (Leo Smith), And Then They Danced [16:05] (Marion Brown), Rhythmus [3:30] (Leo Smith, Marion Brown). Sides 3 & 4: February 18, 1973 Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, USA (live) Tracks: Soundways [19:33] (Marion Brown, Elliott Schwartz), Soundways Part 2 [20:14] (Marion Brown, Elliott Schwartz) It's not rare, hard-to-find or expensive.
  15. This one interests me based on descriptions I've read. Comments? Also, it looks like it is available LP and download. I haven't seen a CD of it. Yes?
  16. Thanks, brownie. Not really expecting to improve my hopeless French, but rather to "tune my ear" to pick up more. Unfortunately, I move from French to Flemish to Arabic to Spanish to Mandarin to Japanese to Tagalog to Korean over the course of a typical year (not to mention "local" languages), so I've given up on fluency in any language.
  17. I'm psyching up for a long work assignment in the French-speaking world. I'd like to do a little subconscious immersion in the language (which I don't speak, to speak of, nor read in any manner worth writing home about*). Looking for a station with a web presence that plays something resembling jazz. I've found a few "shows" broadcast from time-to-time, some "pop" jazz, and some "Hot Club"-focused broadcasts (in English). * Claude Schlouch can attest, based on my attempts at correspondence, 30 years ago.
  18. Allen's Birthday? Yes, it's empirically true. I hope it's a fine one.
  19. I haven't seen a movie or watched television since 1978, including of course Ebert's show. But I read his column a few times in Chicago and read some interview with him late in his life. Really a remarkable guy, seemingly upbeat despite many challenges. An inspiration as a human being, professional success aside.
  20. All the best Jeff!

  22. A very happy birthday, Claude!
  23. I don't really buy anymore (no storage space) with some blue moon exceptions. That said, any recordings by my old friend and informal mentor Vernon Alley (mainly Trilon 78s) that I don't have would be purchased merrily.
  24. I think Google Nose came up short (by a nose) http://www.google.com/landing/nose/
  25. 2013 Best Wishes!
