I don't have either a home or a regular worksite/office. I'm a business traveler.

I can't have a coffee maker and only rarely can I get away from my workday to visit a coffee shop. Seems like I've tried all "the usual suspects" for instant coffee (aside from Starbucks, which I refuse to patronize). Is it all swill, or is there something that vaguely resembles the real thing? Over the years, the decaf/caf gap seems to have narrowed among brewed coffees. So how about a breakthrough on the "instant" front?

Big Sale at Mosaic--3/17/10 through 3/31/10
BeBop replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So, what do you think will go OOP before the next sale? I really don't have a place to store (or even receive) anything right now, but may impose on a friend to hold one for me until I can. Joe Pass is tempting. -
It's that time again. Have a great one!

From the San Jose Metro: OUT IN THE BADLANDS of east San Jo, at the colossal concrete intersection of Senter and Capitol Expressway, sits Andrew Hill High School, named after one of the all-time legends of local lore, Andrew Putnam Hill. Mr. Hill was the guy who saved the California Redwoods in what is now Big Basin National Park. To make a long story short, circa 1900, loggers were hell-bent on destroying the trees, and Hill led a statewide effort to preserve them. It's safe to say there would be no redwoods in Big Basin today if not for Andrew Hill. The loggers would have cut them all down. However, he was not the only Andrew Hill. Another chap with that same name, the legendary jazz pianist, composer and ensemble leader Andrew Hill, died just a few years ago. So when Michael Winsatt, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Advisor at Andrew Hill High School, decided to build his own black-box theater on campus, he dissed Mr. Putnam Hill and named the venue after Andrew Hill the pianist instead. It's called Smokestack Theater, after Hill's classic 1963 album of the same name. ...more here

Do you have a single favorite jazz performance?
BeBop replied to colinmce's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Which time? The Jones-Smith Inc. date? For me, probably the master take of Dameron's "Lady Bird." Yes indeed. Dameron's Lady Bird with Fats? -
That's in my "blind spot". I only work in Honolulu.

One? Pres. Lady be Good. -
The best place I've found - keep in mind I have extremely little time to look around - is Jazz Minds and Art. Or try Chuck's Cellar. Probably closest to Waikiki is the Sorento club in the Ilikai Hotel. I've never been there. Could be gone; I think the hotel got bought or changed affiliations.

For me, it'd be easy: Madison, WI (270 miles). Or, if North was still an option, Edmonton. Depends, of course, on when you're going. Madison appeals to me as a college town. Coffee, books, records, music, libraries....that's how I spend my free time. But I get it: you've just been there. Minneapolis locals (like I should be speaking for them: WD? You out there?) seem to like going up to the lakeside towns in the Duluth area. Less distance=less driving=more fun.

I contacted Jim directly - even knoing that there was an answer out there somewhere - because the problem was so bad on my computer, I couldn't read ANY of Jim's posts (something in his footer) or about 80% of the threads on the board. I knew that a direct contact would allow him to reply in a readable e-mail. So yes, I always search first, especially before bothering one of our hosts.

I was having problems. I contacted Jim Alfredson, who offered this "fix": Sent 24 February 2010 - 02:12 PM I assume you're running Internet Explorer, because this is a common problem. Under the Tools menu, make sure the "Compatibility View" option is unchecked.

James Moody (Auto)Biography?
BeBop replied to BeBop's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Ah! More here and here. Pretty vague. -
Not long ago, I expressed an interest in reading a biography of James Moody, should one ever be produced. Today, I noticed this on Moody's website: Forthcoming Autobiography -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forthcoming autobiography of James Moody with Fernando Gonzales. The site isn't updated all that regularly, aside from the itinerary section, but, does anyone know anything?

Obscure movies that you remember from your youth
BeBop replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I haven't seen a movie, video, television in 30 years, but I remember a couple of experiences. (I realize that at least two of these films aren't obscure. But this is the sum total of my movie recollections. Well, almost.) I remember liking Blues Brothers, for reasons that are probably obvious. (Hey, I was unsophisticated then...just like now.) I remember seeing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest at a drive in with my parents. They decided to stick qround for the second feature: Rancho Deluxe. There was some sort of sex scene early in the film, and my dad burned rubber out of there. -
$5.95 in the US. Also sales tax, at least in some places.

Fantastic! Thanks, Chris.

Joe/Al! Hope you have a GREAT one. Yet another year, no Joe. Wishing you the best anyway.

Sounds like he's ripped all his stuff to some mass storage device and is now selling off the "superfluous" physical version. -
