Is this really a comprehensive Marsalis inventory? Seems like another one pops up every year or few.
-
Am I dumb or is this too obvious: Kenny Drew (1928-1993) and Kenny Drew Jr. (1958-Present), father and son. Brecker? Was mentioned yesterday... I was referring to Randy Marsh. He and Eddie Marshall were both Bay Area drummers at one point.
-
One for Randy that I don't think was mentioned: Marshall, Kaiser and Eddie (grandson) IIRC, Eddie's father was an R&B pianist, though I don't remember his name.
-
Speaking of singers: Chet Baker. Baker the trumpet player, I enjoyed. And Baker the barstool raconteur. But the singing went from ho-hum in the early days to "this borders on irritating" in the later.

Gerry Mulligan is another who never really did much for me. Among the West Coasters, his playing always struck me as particularly soul-less, perhaps not as much as those oboe and flute albums, but far from soul-stirring.

Anyone on the fence about Jackie's Bag or the Ammons/Lewis...GET OFF THE DAMN FENCE. You know who you are.

Hey, you snooze... I got caught snoozing too. The real question: where's felser?
-
I was surprised to see some of the names mentioned. Some are close to the core of my jazz existence. But that doesn't mean anyone else has to dig 'em. Just a reminder how important it is to connect (or not) with the improviser. Non-verbal communication. Storytelling. The best storyteller won't reach me if the story's in Finnish. (Never got anywhere with that language. Alas.) My list includes Dave Brubeck. I think he's on another plane. Pat Metheny. For me, a whole bunch of tones, but no message.

Gobsmacked by another David Ayers post.

Have a great one, however you choose to define "great".

Advice Needed - Inherited a Lifetime Collection
BeBop replied to drJones's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If you're looking to be charitable with your LP windfall, I agree that the library probably isn't the best approach with a substantial collection of potentially valuable items. Instead, sell to a reputable, jazz-knowledgeable vinyl dealer and donate the sales price. -
Well, I'll drink (at the open bar) to that! Heck, I'll even eat (at the non-stop) buffet to that!
-
Me and Bebop have already made our reservations (I'll take the top bunk, Beeb, after the last escapade of which we'll say no more except that my ribs are now almost healed). See you in the bar, Dan? I'll be the one with a fourth helping of lobster bisque from the all-day buffet dripping from his beard. Er, that might not narrow it down much, I realise... Oh and for the record, I don't have a beard. But I'll grow one. What else can you do on a cruise? A brilliant reply. It's not the "Jazz" that offends.

Well, now she's broadcasting, but some of the pages are whacked out. Happy to have the tunes at this moment.

Is AccuRadio still broadcasting? Perhaps it's just me and all the channels I've tried so far. Or, more likely, the firewalls on my computer.

Anyone know anything about this book? American Jazz Tenor Saxophonists: John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Ron Holloway, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Kenny G The Amazon description is worthless, and I don't see much else about it during a quick web search. Yes, I've spelled "worthless" incorrectly. How come I can't edit this post? Oh well...

"Looking at Bird" was the album that made me an unabashed Shepp-o-phile. It's clser to inside than out, to be sure - rooted in Parker tunes and some related to him. Still my favorite Shepp. The duos with Richard Davis are good, but not as good.

...but this money is burning a hole in my pocket!
