  1. I worked "with" Sony on the CDP-101 project. I was given one of the players before they hit the market. I sold it. I think it was a dozen years before I really started buying CDs.

  3. What do you think? I see some people here "Listening" to them. I've heard only clips/samples. They get some hype in the magazines.
  4. A wee bit of discussion here and here. I like Goold quite a bit. He's got a very distinctive approach melodically and, I'll say, rhythmically too - frequently playing across beats/measures. I really like Riley too (I've got his duo disc with Rob Brown and would recommend.) I've heard the trio stuff on the Bob Parlocha show, but haven't bought. He's got a very distinctive tone - something of a dry edge, if that makes any sense. Backstabbers Ball made my "want list" when I first heard about it, but I haven't heard it and haven't been buying, so it hasn't happened. Among current tenor players, these are two of my favorites.

  6. I love my Mosaic set. If you want to 'go deep', it's a real treat. But it is a 'deep' reach into the wallet.

  8. I hear Mr. Parlocha all over. (His website, http://www.jazzwithbobparlocha.com has a list of broadcast stations, if you're interested. It's missing a couple of stations that I know of, including LA/Long Beach's KKJZ, which broadcasts Parlocha 12 hours a day or so.)   12. I missed this thread in its first life. And, I didn't check the date of the original post when I started reading. Going from first post to most recent in just a couple of minutes was quite a ride. Glad to have a happy ending!
  13. For me the difference between a good and a great musician is the ability to make something meaningful of two, three, four takes of a song. Bird could, certainly. It's called creativity. It's the essence of improvised music. Sure, some takes are technical glitches.

  20. I could have posted this in the Religious subforum, as far as I'm concerned. Straight off, I've never known anyone who is "a little into jazz". Seems that people are (1) indifferent (but may profess some "like" because it's got cachet), (2) actively dislike (which is cool because being passionate about music is cool) or (3) they're total addicts. They're nuts like me with storerooms full of recordings, books, instruments, souvenirs, junk...and $118 in the bank, 'cuz they're saving up for a $119 Mosaic set. And they've got 5,000 posts on the Organissimo forums or they lurk like crazy. Oh, they may have other interests. Or they may be passionate about music in general. But I don't know many "dabblers". Rock, Country, Opera, Dance? They've got dabblers aplenty.
  21. Just received something ordered in the January/February sale. The delay in receipt was my fault (traveling). "Cliff" shipped promptly, the package arrived safely and the contents were just-as-advertised. A great experience. Recommended seller!
  22. I started in junior high, when I was in "Stage Band", buying the stuff we played: Basie/Hefti, Maynard, Woody Herman. I did most of my collecting when recordings were cheap ($1 LPs and $2.99 CDs in the early, cut-throat days of the internet) under much broader horizons: trad to free, rock, world, electronic, techno, disco (just kidding). Reached about 10,000 items, then started traveling 24/7/365 for business and haven't seen my collection for 10 years, other than my annual week of vacation when I reload my MP3 players. Presently buy only the irresistible: Mosaics, other limited edition. Still, I know I'll be dead before I get back through it all. The bulk of my buying today is for gifts; music's still my favorite gift. Alternative and more accurate answer: I collect music these days in the form of memories of live performances.
