  1. Hey, that's cool. Nice article. I'll have to check this out, next time I'm in Detroit.
  2. I don't follow all the comings/goings/politics/hysterics/personalities of the board denizens, but I think this is pretty funny.
  3. I'd never heard of the guy, but read the interview in the magazine. He came off as pretty likeable, un-bitter and inspirational.
  4. I'd thought about including those "what are you listening to" threads. But they are music-related and sometimes of value...if people post more than just the name of the album/performer and label.
  5. "Name Three" seems pretty intimidating.
  6. All the bestest on this occasion.
  7. Have a great one.
  8. That time again? Well, I hope it's a great one!
  9. Have an absolutely FABULOUS birthday!
  10. Heard "Sweet Georgia Broan" from this (I think) on KCSM (ugh) early one morning. Enjoyable. Enjoyable enough that I remember it four or five days later.
  11. I really enjoyed the Rusch interview. Braxton was a worthwhile read too. Jazz Inside February 2010
  12. Have a great one, Big Wheel!
  13. I really like Philadelphia and really wish I had more clients there. Tip #1 - Avoid Chester, PA. I've got a client there. Oooh. Tip #2 - South Street is a pretty nice area to "hang out"; I try to pick my hotels so I have access to this area. Non-Tip #1 - Unless you're vegan, I'll spare you my restaurant recommendations. Tip #3 - Record Shops: AKA Music at 27 North Second (seems like the name has changed/changes); Sound of Market 15 South 11th (convenient location, but short hours); another place, not far from South Street was Philadelphia Record Exchange. Those are the three that I recall being worthwhile. Tip #4 - Live Music. Hopefully, Ortlieb's Jazzhaus is still open. It's a bit out of the center, but worth a trip. There was another club IN the center that closed when I was there a couple of visits back. Risky Tip #1 - I think there was a record shop called Main Street Music or Main Street Records. I think it was okay. Maybe there's a "local" who can set me straight.
  14. Just thought I'd bump this back into view. I'm still traveling, but not to any place exciting - just the nature of my work these days. What about you? I'd like to hear where you've been or are going? (Live vicariously, BeBop.)
  15. I'm more (b) than (a), but... My first real exposure to jazz - to which I was immediately and forever enamored ) was through school stage band in elementary school. Our music was Ellington and Basie/Hefti, stretching back, and some contemporary stuff like Kenton (I guess this kind of dates me). My listening was to the early stuff; I guess I just realized that a Maynard Ferguson chart was just to make the bandleader look hip - we rolled our eyes.
  16. "Don't Blame Me". I don't spend all of my time in the States, but a considerable portion of it. And a considerable portion of my income goes to jazz - live jazz. Living musicians. Still, I know I'm the exception. Too many people not even aware of jazz, and those that are, not really supporting it. Buying used and cutout CDs at deep discounts wouldn't seem to provide much financial support, though they do make a market.
  17. I should clarify. It's a deal on yesterday's technology. It's still perfectly functional, but if you've got to have something close to cutting-edge (which I don't)... Again, for emphasis: FM Radio! (Can't believe I didn't mention in my first post.) I Love It.
  18. Do keep in mind - important! - that there are the old-era Zunes and the new "HD" series (only in 16GB and 32GB sizes) They all have FM radios (another reason I strongly prefer Zunes); the new ones have HD FM receivers....plus touch screens and a heap more features. Check out http://www.zune.net. That said, as pure "players" the old Zunes are great. And they come in sizes up to 80GB. You can pick up a 30GB (now discontinued) as a refurb or old stock for about $60. That's a deal.
  19. I've got four - three 30GBs and one 32GB HD. Needless to say, I love them. I only use them as music players, so I can't comment on the web browsers, movie players and such. But mine have been absolutely reliable (despite some hard traveling) and easy to use. Sound quality - well, they're MP3 players. They offer a variety of encodings and bit rates; again, I've been satisfied. Probably best of all, they're not iPods. (That's more of a comment about me and my dislike of the "easy solution"/trendy/mainstream than it is about the Apple product.)

    Paul Sundfor

A while back, I ran into a cheap cache of NineWinds CDs. I couldn't keep them, so I gave them away, but saved a bunch on my MP3 player. (More accurately, one of my MP3 players...which explains the long time lag in my story.) Anyway, I'm shuffle-moding this morning and hear a nice version of Jumpin' Jax. NWCD0195 Paul Sundfor - Nascencey Fred Hersch (p), Drew Gress (b), Tom Rainey (d), John Swana (t) Swana isn't on most cuts. I won't say it knocked me out, but it was pleasantly swingin' stuff and I took the player out of shuffle mode and listened to the album straight through. Sundfor's tone hints at Phil Woods and Konitz. His musical sensibilities don't stray too far "outside". If someone told me he was an educator, it wouldn't surprise me. Anyway, just curious if anyone knows anything about Sundfor. Web search doesn't turn up much, except some link to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and a variety of musical endeavors. (Beardscratcher's Compendium, Seussical Broadway play, some work in San Diego...and, of course, for $35, I can see his criminal history.) Nascency is on Artistdirect.
  23. Hey wait...I missed the party? Well, I hope it was a good one.
  24. This will have to go on my reading list. There must be stories. Changing topics, someone or something's got to inspire James Moody to write (or publish, if he's "written") his autobiography. The stories would have to be good, and the storytelling...!
