Mosaic, Nessa, Organissimo CDs
BeBop replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'd agree on all three points, though mostly on the Nessas and Organissimos. I feel something more of a direct personal desire to support here. Mosaic is a great company, and I want to see them continue their good works, but BUY LOCAL! And there are other board members with recordings worth buying too. I recently picked up an Allen Lowe, for instance (though I couldn't keep it, and it became a gift - no reflection on the musical merit!) -
Thanks king ubu. I enjoyed the sound clips I was able to find online. But I couldn't find a source in South Africa, the U.S. or Uganda. Anyone?

Help from a European member requested...

I know there's a UBS operation in Lansing, but you probably wouldn't want to get mixed up with those guys. None of the big banks will help you out? (I suppose it would help if you had an account there.) Comerica? Fifth Third? Okay, I'm not all that surprised. -

Geographical distribution of your jazz collection

...or Uptown, Downtown and 52nd Street. Can you store loft sessions in a basement? Basement sessions in your loft? -
Geographical distribution of your jazz collection

It'd be tough enough to categorize my collection based on where it's stored, much less on the basis suggested above. -
On a per-item basis. this is about the most expensive set of recommendations I've seen. (...not that they aren't worth every guilder...) Not a bunch of Blue Notes, OJCs, Hats, Delmarks and such. (Nonaah is, of course, a bargain. Seriously, I broke down and ordered the CD itself.)

How Mood-Dependent is Your Listening Enjoyment?

...or Bird with Strings ...extra syrup! -
Saturday afternoon. I'm at work in the sleep-deprived, edgy panic that has defined the last 24 months or so of my life. I've got jazz radio here, so I'm listening. It's Bird and Fats from, I think, "One Night at Birdland". No! Not now! Too farntic. Can't handle it. Next thing I know, I'VE TURNED OFF BIRD. Damn. Can't say that this was the first time ever. Just wasn't working for me. Sorry Yard. Fat Girl.

Wife of a friend of mine just contacted me. She want of get her husband everything on his Amazon wish list for his birthday. Looking over the list, I've concluded he listens to Bob Parlocha too much No, not tons of Bay Area female vocalists, HEAPS of Steeplechase stuff. Well, could be worse. So any recommendations for an inexpensive source of non cut-out Steeplechases in the US?

Wasn't he on a Reuben Wilson album?

Great. Thanks. Not sure when I'll be in New York again (other than JFK airport next week )

I thought I had this on LP, but I was thinking it was a flute/bass thing.
-
Oooh. I've got that one too. Memory, memory, BeBop. And I think I've got some of the Braxton on LP. Think. Dolphy w. Chuck Israels (Prestige/OJC) - Wasn't aware of this. My old friend/teacher, Chuck Israels. Ben Webster w. Milt Hinton (Famous Door/Progressive) - Must get this one. Thanks for all the great recommendations.

Thanks. I was aware of the track on Haden's "Golden Number", but hadn't remembered this.

How could I forget: ...Dolphy/Ron Carter ...Dolphy/Richard Davis
-
Forgot: ...Lee Konitz/Red Mitchell Anyone heard? Hein Van de Geyn: Hein Van de Geyn Meets Lee Konitz

I'm hoping to have a high speed internet connection in a few days that I can use to download a bit of new music, and I'm interested in sax / bass duo recordings. I've got a few that I can think of... ...Archie Shepp/NHOP ...Archie Shepp/Richard Davis ...Stephen Riley/John Brown ...Houston Person/Ron Carter ...and certainly a few I'm forgetting Aside: This will be my first-ever download; we'll have to see if I can actually go through with it. I'm a "physical" kind of guy, when it comes to recordings. But I haven't seen my collection in a couple of years.

Right across the street from the old Broadway Tower. Is there more at Other Music now than there used to be, or was just a recent discovery for you?
-
Have you ever added something to your collection and come away with a lower opinion of the artist? Like "Hey, he's fallible after all."

I don't have any Wynton Marsalis. And yet I feel satisfied. (I think I've got a Messengers album he's on.) I'm not really ragging on Wynton here. I just feel like I can get through life without him. I've got a half dozen Branfords. I'm a tenor hound. And I especially like the tenor in a duo or trio setting; Branford's got a couple of those.

I'll pose the question by way of examples. I love Lester Young. If he put out fifty albums (for sake of example) I'd want about 46 of them. I like Scott Hamilton some too. If he's got a hundred albums, five's probably enough for me. They're so similar as to be nearly indistinguishable. Frankly, I'm probably more interested in his sidemen. I like Sonny Stitt and Eddie Harris. Give me twenty of them. Ben Webster? 30. Archie Shepp? Another 30. Love Bud Powell. Thirty (out of an assumed 50) is enough here too; he put out some sub-par material. Or perhaps I should say that some of his sub-par material has been released. Once upon a time, I was a completist with respect to another artist. As I got to the items that were scarce, I began to realize why they were. So what's your "enough" level?

If your name is Herbie, are you just destined for a career in jazz? Sure, there are lots of "Sonny"s too, but there are plenty of "Sonny"s that I know that aren't in jazz. But "Herbie"s. Seems like they're all here. And most of 'em pretty good.
