  1. Two-part interview with Big Jay over at Jazz Wax. Talks about Birdland in Seattle. Jazz Wax
  2. My "hope" turned out to be short lived. I got a cancellation notice, and an assurance that my credit card charge would be refunded. I'm keeping my hopes "in-check", but I got re-billed, presumably for the Stitts, on Friday 31 July. Check those on-line credit card bills.
  3. Their music is in something of a blindspot for me, but, once upon a time, the band was my neighbor. And I feel fortunate to have been too callow to fully understand what was going on next door. (I did understand naked women, however.)
  4. Ordered & SHIPPED from Jazz Loft. More than two weeks after release date, this is still only one of two places I've seen it, the other being Downtown Music Gallery.

  6. Archie Shepp + Max Roach = The Long March
  7. Absolutely all the best! Happy birthday!
  8. It's going to be great...unless you ordered that Stitt...
  9. My "hope" turned out to be short lived. I got a cancellation notice, and an assurance that my credit card charge would be refunded.
  10. Well, if you happen to stumble across a CD in your local Borders (try looking under the racks of videogames and movies; who knows?), here's $5 off: http://www.bordersmedia.com/coup/073009/co...=SA_20090730_NR
  11. I should be careful about overplaying the continued "life" of the LP. As a used product, it's still widely traded and pretty widely available...provided you're not looking for Blue Note original pressings or Sun Ra sold-at-concert-onlies. As a new product, it's a big niche. I'm always amazed how much pop music comes out in this form, even today. But it's a niche. And damned expensive at that. Still, good to have around.
  12. How about a false sunset? The LP LIVES!
  13. I know they're still 'round-about in some form, but the laser turntable still seems to have been ahead of its time...and perhaps it always will be.
  14. Where are the clowns? For a while there, I was beginning to think that Oldies had turned into something of a circus. But then I remembered the "delights" of dealing with CMG during the big sale and realized that now Oldies was playing the middleman, dealing with CMG on my behalf. Now there's something to be thankful for.
  15. Yesterday, I broke down and ordered 4 copies of the Stitt box. Today, I got a shipping notice and a credit card charge suggesting that all four shipped. (That was my entire order. One copy for my favorite library and three Christmas gift copies. I really do like that box. Hope my mother-in-law does too.)
  16. Somehow, it was only in the past five or six years that I came to appreciate his "classic" work. But I have the rest of my listening days to continue to enjoy what he's left us. Thanks and rest peacably.
  17. My make-a-million idea a few years back was to scan back covers of albums either instead of or in addition to the cover art. For me, the back/liner is where the 'action' is.
  18. Apparently he's registered here, but hasn't posted much. Birthday greetings are in order anyway. Check him out: http://jazzprofiles.blogspot.com/2009/04/jack-tracy.html
  19. For anyone feeling anxious or dissatisfied with customer service at Oldies, look back to the beginning of this thread and remember the Concord Music Group experience.
  20. Welcome! I hadn't noticed you around here before, Mr. Goold. For any unfamiliar with his music, I'd recommend "The Flows". It's on my huge capacity MP3 player (along with, as Slim Gaillard might have put it, "a million billion tenor players..."). When the random function hits "The Flows", Goold's very distinctive phrasing and tone are immediately identifiable (and enjoyable). No foursquare playing here. I've heard and enjoyed "Gooold" too.
  21. Thanks everyone. I had a way above-average birthday. As some of you know, my days are pretty much non-stop hostile confrontations, presumably for the public good. My birthday included an "enjoy your birthday" from a TSA screener(!) and a really nice hotel room upgrade from a humble place where I've spent 140 of the last 365 nights. And, of course, a nice thread here at Organissimo. (Thanks JohnS!)
  22. The latest Utne Reader has excerpts from Stompin' at the Grand Terrace by Philip S. Bryant. Anyone who "name drops" Rex Stewart, Baby Dodds and Don Byas is alright with me. http://www.utne.com/GreatWriting/Stompin-G...zz-Chicago.aspx
  23. Live it up! And enjoy.
