  1. Rut-2-3-4, Rut-2-3-4...
  2. Man, this bums me. I don't recall getting any cut outs from Oldies before, and the fill rates...well, they're just low. No, I didn't order anything myself, so I'm not directly affected, but I hate to see a company that's done me right, do wrong.

    Marc Mommaas

I did a search, and found precisely one hit for Mommaas. (Perhaps his name is misspelled out there; seems like it'd be easy to do.) I heard him with Armen Donelian a while back (duo) and with a bass player (sorry, name lost to the mists of time and senility.) And I've heard duo recordings with Donelian (mostly standards) and Nikolaj Hess (mostly not, IIRC). He's playing this Thursday with a quartet including Frank Kimbrough at Smalls. While so far, I prefer his duo work - I'm definitely biased toward duos these days - I'm looking forward to the Thursday gig, if I can get free.
  4. Happy! Birthday!
  5. Cool. Thanks. I have his book, but it's dated now. My main interest is soundtracks (I don't watch movies), so this is even more useful.
  6. Have a great one!
  7. Have a great birthday!
  8. (Don't take the following seriously) Prostitution has proven to be a long-term, viable business model in many cases.
  9. Last Chances listed below. I guess I didn't know all of these were endangered. John Coltrane: The Complete Prestige Recordings (16 CDs) - regularly $229.98, now $199.98 These 125 selections on 16 CDs cover all of Coltrane's Prestige work (1956-58), excluding his work with Miles Davis. In addition to his 10 sessions as a leader, Coltrane's work with Red Garland, Kenny Burrell and Gene Ammons, among others, and in a variety of all-star jam sessions give testament to his relentlessly creative flow of ideas. Lu Watters Yerba Buena Jazz Band: The Complete Good Time Jazz Recordings (4 CDs) - regularly $64.98, now $48.98 The complete historic Jazz Man and West Coast label sessions (1941-46) by this celebrated San Francisco traditional jazz revival band. Bob Scobey, Turk Murphy, Clancy Hayes and Wally Rose are among the featured sidemen. The set comes with a lavish booklet of great essays, photos and memorabilia. 96 tracks in all. The Debut Records Story (4 CDs) - regularly $59.98, now $39.98 The short-lived Debut label was a bold experiment owned and operated by Charles Mingus and Max Roach in the early '50s. These 60 performances from the label give a great view of the jazz scene in those years with lots of great bebop performances includng the Massey Hall concert and an all-star four trombone sesson and tracks leaning toward the disonant and the experimental. Thad Jones, Paul Bley, Jimmy Knepper, Kenny Dorhan are heard in the first recordings as leader. Comes in a strudy cube with an extensive booklet. The Riverside History Of Classic Jazz (3 CDs) - regularly $39.98, now $24.98 The original 1956 Riverside boxed set, a great historical reference with rural blues, ragtime and Harlem piano rolls, historic New Orleans and Chicago recordings from the Gennett and Paramount catalogs, New York tracks from Ellington and Henderson and much more. The booklet includes rare photos and an essay by Charles Edward Smith. Jazz At The Santa Monica Civic (3 CDs) - regularly $23.98, now $18.98 This 1972 revival of Jazz AtThe Philharmonic is an inspired live concert. The Basie band with saxophonists Jimmy Forrest and Curtis Peagler plays a great set highlighted by a number of Frank Foster tunes. Ella's set is on fire! 10. A week to ship is a bit better than par for my course with Oldies (years ago). It wouldn't surprise me to see 80%+ "fill" rates. But I'll feel better once someone has CDs in-hand.
  11. Oh, and Sonny Simmons! (several) I can remember hearing Sonny on the streets in San Francisco when I was working there, echoing up New Montgomery. My windows were always open.
  12. Forgive me for working from memory here; I'll probably foul this up. I'm pretty sure there's a Hamiet Bluiett solo album called "Birthright" on India Navigation (?) I haven't heard this is a long while, but, as a saxophonist/pretender, it lingers in my memory...what's left of it. And Lee Konitz has "Lone-Lee" "For Alto" was one of my landmark listening experiences.
  13. As I mentioned in my original post, I've experienced slowness from Oldies (Nina's Discount Warehouse) before. They've always come through for me...in the past; no promises that I can't keep here! (That isn't to say every item I ever ordered, though I can't recall incomplete orders.) Since I didn't order anything from this sale, I'll just hold a good thought for y'all.
  14. Stitt's Bits is on my desert island list. Perhaps not top 10, but I think it's his best era...though there was the organ trio and Don Patterson... That said, I can't answer Big Wheel's query; I don't have the box with me.
  15. Hope it's a GREAT one, Randy!
  16. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably play with them all, other than the Opera browser option, since I'm stuck with Explorer. The dvorak was my first trial. Quick and slick. Sort of a condensed version of two I used to use: CEOExpress and RefDesk
  17. I'll be traveling with two computers for a while (it's a test). My work computer will, of course, be directed to a suitable page for my professional duties. I could set my personal computer to this forum and probably be happy and reasonably well-informed...at least about CD sales. But ideally, I'd like a customizable page, perhaps with RSS feeds, where I could nix the undesireables (sports, celebrity worship, movies, TV) and populate it with cool stuff, as defined by my admittedly unorthodox tastes. Thoughts? Use something like AOL or CNN and, if you cut out the sports, celebrities, movies and TV, you get a blank page.
  18. I voted for #3 in part because it's about THE BAND, not organissimo.org...as nice as this place is. Something about the band pic doesn't do it for me.
  19. Yes, I'd like to come in and buy myself a present to celebrate your birthday. But seriously, thanks for serving addicts like me.
  20. Belated best! (Yeah, I be late again.)
  21. If you're not already broke... http://www.oldies.com Fantasy Warehouse Sale I'm not affiliated with the seller (though they've been reliable but slow in my past orders) nor am I a bankruptcy attorney.
  22. Happy Birthday Late and Happy Birthday FotB (My wife hates sharing her birthday, so you get separate acknowledgements.) Enjoy! Enjoy!
