  1. Well JSngry, it's been a while since I've been called a kind soul but I remember telling you about the extra date on the CD release. The musicians on that session seem more suited to Hill's music and overall I like it better but I always liked the session with Lee as well.
  2. Well the Pistons did it, thanks to the new seven game plan which Stern put in, mid-season I might add, to help the Lakers but the Pistons are the ones to benefit and Stern was right, the better team will win a seven game series while the upsets are more possible with the five game series.
  3. Get Smart and Soap were always my favorites. Barney Miller, early MASH, WKRP, Cheers were all great too. For drama, Hill Street Blues
  4. Good choices BFrank but Harper did make one for Strata-East and a great one at that. James Spaulding might have been a good candidate for the label.
  5. I like Lee with Joe Henderson. The Sidewinder and Mode For Joe (and to a lesser extent The Rumproller) made me want to hear more from this combo.
  6. Usually not much for recent recordings but liked this one a lot. Hard bop played with fire and imagination and not at all derivative to these ears. Anyone else check this out?
  7. Sorry but it took a long time to find the tape. Wayne Shorter at the Village Vanguard (I'm been told it's late 1964 a few times but maybe 1965) Eye of the Hurricane Just in Time Oriental Folk Song Virgo Fran Dance Theme Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Gary Peacock, Tony Williams The sound quality is OK. The performance amazing. Sorry I promised that I wouldn't make copies.
  8. Buddy Terry is still around (lives in New Jersey, I think), Larry played on was of his records as is Gildo Mahones in LA I think. The guys from his Arista dates are probably around as well. If the names are not up to snuff, than Smoke is your best bet then Smalls. If it gets better then maybe the Jazz Standard or Birdland or a Monday night at the Blue Note.
  9. While not up to the Plugged Nickel to me I think it's a great date. A true working band on fire and it captures a period better than most records a can think of. The three CD set really demonstrates that in a way the 2 LPs don't. As for the alternates etc, I remember a rather lengthy discussion on the Blue Note board about this, I believe one of the producers (David Weiss) chimed in as well. Does anyone remember that? What I remember was that there was only one tune with DeJohnette and that there was a lot more material that was "releaseable".
  10. The Blue Note tests for Woody were released in the '80s on Muse (In The Beginning?) and I thought they were great. I thought Tolliver would be ideal too because he would have made great records. His playing while not up to Hubbard and Morgan was solid and he was a great composer, an important part of making a great record.

    Bennie Maupin

Live at the Lighthouse. His playing was wonderful and he contributed some great tunes.
  12. The Prisoner is to me a masterpiece and a close second is Empyrean Isles which features Freddie and Herbie at the top of their game (especially Freddie)
  13. Wayne Shorter's "The Soothsayer" has always been my favorite and Grant Green's "Solid" not very far behind that.
  14. I second the nominations for Hancock's "The Prisoner" and Young's "Unity" and would like to suggest Booker Little's "Out Front"
  15. I have the Wayne tape, I don't know when it was recorded but it is definitely Gary Peacock on Bass and I was told it was recorded at the Vanguard and that it was a Miles gig that he didn't show for. They played Eye of the Hurricane, Just in Time and Virgo among others I can't recall.

    lee morgan and who?

Though they didn't record that much together, I have to go with Joe Henderson They are perfect foils for each other on the Sidewinder in way I don't hear from the rest of the guys (who are all brilliant). Wayne is a close second because he is on my favorite Lee records (Search for the New Land, The Procrastinater, and Standards).
  17. From what you describe it sounds like something from "Out Front" but if has trombone and tenor then John is right, it's probably from Booker Little and Friend (later called Victory and Sorrow). Both are highly recommended.
