  1. We stay at Gina's parents house on Christmas Eve, so we open our gifts to each other before we go there. We celebrate with her family that EVEning and It's back to my family on Christmas day to open gifts and eat about 3:00 p.m. It's more running than I would like, but it just one of those things you live with. In any event, I will most likely score Mosaic Certificate or music from my ever growing list
  2. It's a combination of the two in our house as there are about 25 family members in attendance. We usuall pass out the gifts and try to start with one person, then the next. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I like trying to slow it down a little, it's nice to see someones reaction to a gift you may have put much time into finding/buying rather than setting a record for how quickly they can be opened.
  3. I suppose we would need a MASTER list of all that want to be a part of this Holiday Extravaganza. Once the top secret list is compiled, names must be drawn to determine who has who. I think this is where you would come in (drawing the names). It would then be up to the individual to determine the gift and make the delivery. We would also need addresses of the individuals participating in this most joyous occasion. Mark
  4. Is Patricia really the Queen, if so I certainly apologize for any disrepect I may have show you in past posts Personally I would go to Lansing, but my preference would be St. Louis as there are many things to do. I'm sure some folks may not be interested in doing all the things mentioned above, but at least they are available. In my case, I would proabably consider staying an extra day or two, although I'm sure many may not have this opportunity. B3-er, any thoughts??? In any event, I hope everyone on this board and their families have a safe and happy holiday season! Mark
  5. No more interest in this???? Come on guys (and ladies), join the fun!!!
  6. Dan, I'm still in for St. Louis, great city, lots to do, great jazz heritage, great food, relatively enexpensive, the Cardinals, Euclid Records, U-City Loop, River Boat Gambling (although I'm not much of a gamble, as I'd rather spend my hard earned cash on music)!!! What more could you ask for??? Sign up below: 1. Dan 2. Mark 3. 4. 5. ...... B)
  7. I second St. Louis, it's a great city with lots to see and do!!!!
  8. COUNT ME IN, SOUNDS LIKE A FUN IDEA!!! HOW 'BOUT IT B3-ER????
  9. I have family in St. Louis and visit many time a year anyway, sounds great to me. I would probably go to this convention anyway.
  10. I think I noticed that today is the birthday of Ghost of Miles....Happy Birthday David!!!
  11. How about Chicago??? I don't live there, but it close to many members and has a great jazz club (The Jazz Showcase). Mark
  12. Deep, That's the type of response that irritates people on these boards. You may not agree with what was said, but the smart ass response is not really necessary. If she mis-understood your statement or question, simply say "you didn't understand what I was asking".....just my opinion ! If you disagree, no big deal!
  13. Big Wheel, Good for you, I saw Frank a few weeks in Chicago (with a different rhythm section) and he was great, playing better than ever. He seems like a guy really at peace with him self. He always mentions that it's great to be alive and I would certainly agree . Mark
  14. I went to see drummer "Killer" Ray Appleton with his quartet last night in Indianapolis. The band sounded great with Steve Allee on Piano, Jamey Aebersold on Alto and Frank Smith on Bass. I stay for both set and heard a lot of great music; two tunes by Miles, a couple by Wes Montgomery (Killer played with Wes as a teenager), one by Gillispie, Mobley and many others. If any of you have seen Ray live, you know he has a lot of stories about many of the musicians he has played with through the years. One thing I can tell you is that this man does not like rap music and makes it clear in between each song. He goes on and on about P.Diddy and his money, Missy Elliott and her money, R. Kelly (and Michael Jackson) and his corruption of our youth, baggy jeans and butt cleavage , drugs, voilence and so on. He feels very strongly that rap is the "just plain bad". Some patrons seem to enjoy this commentary but I felt some thought it was too much. I seen him several times and it doesn't really bother me, what do you guys (and girls) think? Mark
  15. Christmas is always Mosiac time! The Amy and Pearson Selects are on my list as well as the Mulligan and Stitt. I always seem to score at least one set and maybe a gift certificate or two!
  16. Great job Dan, very cool! I've met Ira many times, I'm sure he would be a great person to interview. He has told me several stories, very interesting guy! Mark
  17. Another great book is called "Cat on a Hot Thin Groove" by Gene Deitch. It show the cover, articles and all the cartoons that were published in the jazz magazine called "The Record Changer" which was published in the 40/50's. Gene was the animator for this magazine and also drew Crazy Cat, Tom Terrific, Tom & Jerry and Popeye (for a period). He is now 79 years old and lives in Prague; I count him as a good friend and wonder person. Although I had never heard of the magazine until I saw this book, many of the more "experienced" board members will probably remember this magazine. A friend of mine gave me an original copy of a 1949 edition, which I have framed. As I am a freelance photographer who specializes in jazz musicians, Gene made a drawing for me, using the original character (the "Cat") from the Record Changer magazine; one of my prized possessions! Pick one up today!!! Mark
  18. I believe it was only volume 1 but I will check it out tonight. I think the cost is $10.75 with tax. I also have volume 2 and the smaller 7x7 book plus one called California Cool and one that the name escapes me at the moment. This store had several different books on jazz; I picked up one on Billie Holiday for $3.00! If anyone has a request, I will ge glad to see if they may have it. Mark
  19. I saw several of the Blue Note Album Cover books at a local used book store, but the books are actually new. This is the original soft cover book that came out several years ago and may be out of print at this time. The cover is blue and is 12x12 in size with tons of great Wolff photographs in it. If anyone is looking for one of these, let me know and I'll pick it up for you. I don't remember the cost but it was substantially lower than the origianal cost. Mark
  20. Wow, I must be completely different! I can't wait to find a place where I can sit for an hour or so and not have to talk or listen to someone talk!!! From what I've seen in many clubs, some of the people continue to talk and laugh all through the performance, which pisses me off!
