  1. Big Wheel, Good for you, I saw Frank a few weeks in Chicago (with a different rhythm section) and he was great, playing better than ever. He seems like a guy really at peace with him self. He always mentions that it's great to be alive and I would certainly agree . Mark
  2. Nice photograph of Jimmy though!
  3. I went to see drummer "Killer" Ray Appleton with his quartet last night in Indianapolis. The band sounded great with Steve Allee on Piano, Jamey Aebersold on Alto and Frank Smith on Bass. I stay for both set and heard a lot of great music; two tunes by Miles, a couple by Wes Montgomery (Killer played with Wes as a teenager), one by Gillispie, Mobley and many others. If any of you have seen Ray live, you know he has a lot of stories about many of the musicians he has played with through the years. One thing I can tell you is that this man does not like rap music and makes it clear in between each song. He goes on and on about P.Diddy and his money, Missy Elliott and her money, R. Kelly (and Michael Jackson) and his corruption of our youth, baggy jeans and butt cleavage , drugs, voilence and so on. He feels very strongly that rap is the "just plain bad". Some patrons seem to enjoy this commentary but I felt some thought it was too much. I seen him several times and it doesn't really bother me, what do you guys (and girls) think? Mark
  4. Christmas is always Mosiac time! The Amy and Pearson Selects are on my list as well as the Mulligan and Stitt. I always seem to score at least one set and maybe a gift certificate or two!
  5. Not necessarily my favorites, but fun to listen to anyway! Billy Wooten: played on a few of the Grant Green recordings in the late sixties. I met him about a month ago, very interesting guy. Buddy Montgomery: Wes's brother, very good vibe and piano player Terry Gibbs: Great!
  6. Great job Dan, very cool! I've met Ira many times, I'm sure he would be a great person to interview. He has told me several stories, very interesting guy! Mark
  7. Another great book is called "Cat on a Hot Thin Groove" by Gene Deitch. It show the cover, articles and all the cartoons that were published in the jazz magazine called "The Record Changer" which was published in the 40/50's. Gene was the animator for this magazine and also drew Crazy Cat, Tom Terrific, Tom & Jerry and Popeye (for a period). He is now 79 years old and lives in Prague; I count him as a good friend and wonder person. Although I had never heard of the magazine until I saw this book, many of the more "experienced" board members will probably remember this magazine. A friend of mine gave me an original copy of a 1949 edition, which I have framed. As I am a freelance photographer who specializes in jazz musicians, Gene made a drawing for me, using the original character (the "Cat") from the Record Changer magazine; one of my prized possessions! Pick one up today!!! Mark
  8. I believe it was only volume 1 but I will check it out tonight. I think the cost is $10.75 with tax. I also have volume 2 and the smaller 7x7 book plus one called California Cool and one that the name escapes me at the moment. This store had several different books on jazz; I picked up one on Billie Holiday for $3.00! If anyone has a request, I will ge glad to see if they may have it. Mark
  9. I saw several of the Blue Note Album Cover books at a local used book store, but the books are actually new. This is the original soft cover book that came out several years ago and may be out of print at this time. The cover is blue and is 12x12 in size with tons of great Wolff photographs in it. If anyone is looking for one of these, let me know and I'll pick it up for you. I don't remember the cost but it was substantially lower than the origianal cost. Mark
  10. Wow, I must be completely different! I can't wait to find a place where I can sit for an hour or so and not have to talk or listen to someone talk!!! From what I've seen in many clubs, some of the people continue to talk and laugh all through the performance, which pisses me off!
  11. I wouldn't (personally) let the low ratings scare me away. If I have not heard the music I would probably take a chance based on my knowledge of the artist and the sidemen playing with him. There have been so many recordings that have not received good reviews, that I thought were great (I hope this doesn't say too much about my taste in music). I have taken the chance on a ton of recordings that I have never heard or maybe I liked the way one of the sidemen played and have had very few that I have been dissapointed with. You have to remember that these reviews are just one persons opinion and everyone has different taste. It's not to say that a critics opinion is wrong, as some are right on the money, I just wouldn't base my purchase solely on their thoughts. Maybe you should be a critic, as I have bought a few recordings based on your feeling and have liked them all. Mark
  12. I went to see George Coleman in Chicago (Jazz Showcase) a few weeks ago and there were about 50 people in attendance. The owner told me that one night during the week, he had about 17 people for 2 shows and this is George Coleman! I have been to a ton of shows there and they do sell out on occasion but many nights there may be 50-100 people total at the show I attend. Benny Golson and the Dave Holland Quartet will be playing soon and I'm sure the attendace will be better but I'm always freaking out at the low attendance during some of these shows. You've got to wonder how long some of these "jazz only" clubs can hang on! Mark
  13. Thanks to all that responded!!! The calculator is good to have, I appreciate it. Claude, Yes I have a scanner but these are original jazz photographs and the quality of a scanned image is no where near the original but again, thanks for the idea. I will go with Wolff's plan! Mark
  14. I need to ship some jazz photographs to a few people on this board that live in Europe. What is the most economical way to ship them and get them there in a reasonable amount of time and in one peice. The post office says if it's under four pounds, it about $23.00 which is crazy. Is there a better way??? Thanks, Mark
  15. Deus62, I have several autographed album covers that are framed. I buy my frames from a mail order frame store, as I am a photographer and am always framing something for myself or someone else. I think you can get a lower cost than they are selling them for. Just my opinion! Mark
  16. Has anyone in the US ordered from Amazon UK before. Although I have bought from Amazon many times, I haven't purchased from the UK. How is the delivery time, how about exchange rates (I threw out todays newspaper). Thanks, Mark
  17. I visited Paris a few years ago and bought several copies of "Jazz Hot" and a few others from a street venfor for a buck or two each. I not sure why, other than to look at the photographs and old ads for new releases and jazz clubs (I can't read French!) Mark
  18. I would second themusicresouce.com, I have ordered from them many times with no problems! Mark
  19. I just got back from the Frank Morgan show in Chicago. Man, that guy can still play!!! He played a very nice rendition of Parker's "Billie's Bounce" as well as Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Mood" plus many others. He was in great spirits and looking well, smiling while not playing, seated on a drum stool instead of standing. He played with a local rhythm section consisting of Willie Pickins on Piano, Robert Shy on drums and Larrry Gray on bass; they were smokin'!!!!! I shot a ton of photographs and give him one from a previous performance last year. He did mention again that it's great to be alive (I would agree). He seems to really be at peace with himself, looks good and sounds great. Since I don't know how to post my photographs on the BB, if anyone want to see any of the photographs, send me your email address (some already have) and I will share some with you. Mark
  20. It's good to see there are some fans out there. Tom in RI, yes I will also be photographing him tomorrow. I have made some great photos of him a couple of years ago. PM me with your e-mail address and I'll show you some. Thanks for all who replied to my question! Mark
  21. I'm going to see alto player Frank Morgan tomorrow. Anybody seen him before? I've seen him once before and throught he was preetty good. I had a short conversation with him after the show and told him it was good to see him playing so well, he replied "it's just good to be alive". I'm not sure if he was just ailing at the time or referring to past "demons". Mark
  22. Thanks Catesta, I didn't look there, although I did look on regular ebay. Mark
  23. I am looking for a copy of Stanley Turrentine's Joy Ride. If there is any one that can part with one, please send me a PM and let me know what you want in return. Thanks in advance for all who reply!!! Mark
