Are there members that collect jazz posters?
sheldonm replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't really collect them but have a few. I nice print of Mile's Apple ad, a huge (used in subways) Miles Kind of Blue poster and a RVG poster signed by the master himself! Mark -
We don't change our time in Indy, I just have to remember what time it is everywhere else! Mark

I have a friend that played drums for Henry for about 30 years (Jack Gilfoy). He said he was a great guy to work for. Mark

That sounds like fun although I head Byrd's not sounding too good these days .

Yes, the exhibit was great. If anyone gets a chance to see him or his work, take the opportunity, very impressive! Mark

If I recall correctly, Chris did write the liner notes with someone else (Orrin K perhaps?). The disc is called "Gettin' Together". I think my memory is fading !

Did Francis Wollf ever take a bad photo?
sheldonm replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Brownie, You are correct. Many people reading this have probably never used a camera that didn't focus, expose, advance or rewind for you. It's much more difficult to do this in the field than you would expect and still turn out "perfect" images. I think Wolff's body of work speaks for his ability! I have many of his original prints and they are amazing. Mark -
Gordon Parks is quite a photographer as well as composer. Read his autobiography, quite inspiring and eye opening. I saw an exhibit of his work a while back, very nice!

Did Francis Wollf ever take a bad photo?

I would agree that Bird could take an average (or even broken) saxophone and play better than most people could with a top of the line horn. I also think if you are a good photographer, you could take better photographs with a middle of the road camera than many people can with a $8000.00 Canon digital. With photography, I feel it's the photographer's personal vision that makes or breaks an image. I have seen many photographs that are technically perfect that put me to sleep. On the other hand, someone may love them......to each his own!!!! -
Did Francis Wollf ever take a bad photo?

I heard one time that Francis would often photograph with one hand while holding the flash out to one side. I don't know if this is the case, but it's possible (although a little difficult). Mark -

I've been a photographer for about 30 years and have photographed a ton of rock musicians but now shoot primarily jazz musicians. My take on this issue is how you define a great photograph. If your looking for something that's defined as not being "too grainy", the 6x6 would certainly produce a nicer print than 35mm; although this is changing a little with the advances in film/digital technology. But this is certainly not the definition of a great photograph, in my opinion. There are many photographs that are grainy/blurred that show more feeling than the ones that are tack sharp. A photograph that is technically perfect can still be a bore. I have many original photographs that were shot by Wolff, Claxton, Leonard, Gottlieb and others. While all the prints I have are considered great (in my opinion), they may not be considered so by others. I centainly think, actually I know all these photographers have made bad photographs and I have seen examples from all of the above. Even a photograph that is not technically "great" may still qualify as a great photograph. Sometimes what makes a photograph great is the combination of sharpness or lack there of, the tonal range, the subject matter, composition or the historical nature of it. I could ramble about this for days but I'm sure I've bored some of you already. These are just my opinions based on my experiences. BTW, I like the Mobley shot; while maybe not "great", it shows some creativity, enough so that everyone has an opinion on it. That in itself may qualify it as great! Mark -
...on the other hand, I went to see Pat Martino last night in Chicago and the place was packed to the rafters. Pat played for about 75 minutes non-stop and the crowd was diggin' it. Man, that guy can play!!! He makes a point to let the crowd know they could be somewhere else and he appreciates them being there, a very gracious guy!!!! I have heard many people say he is one of the nicest guys in the business and I would have to say he's up there on my list, and I've seen a lot of live shows.

Well, today I bought groceries (nothing exotic) to make it through the week. Last Saturday I bought a new car (Jeep) so my spending habits may slow down a little for a while. I spend more time and money on photography and live jazz than I should. I went to see Slide Hampton last night and will see Pat Martino tomorrow B) .

I just saw Tom a few weeks ago in Chicago and I thought he looked and acted pretty good (considering his condition). I took a chance on a conversation in the little dressing room after the show and while it's not real easy to chitchat with Tom, he did carry on a decent conversation with me. I told him I had driven from Indianapolis to hear him play and he said he had just recently played in Lafayette Indiana (Purdue University). I gave him a photograph that I had made of him a year or so ago and although I don't think we ever made eye contact during our talk, he did look at the photograph for a minute and said it was "beautiful" and thanked me for it. I also met his wife who looks to be about 12 years old (I'm sure she's not). When I asked her if I could meet Tom, she said "sure, go on up stairs and knock on the door". One thing is for sure, if you've not seem him play live, he is a sight to behold, but his playing is magical! Mark

I don't think anything was ever resolved. I'm still voting for St. Louis around the time of the record collector's convention or maybe Chicago around the festival at the end of August. Just my opinion but would make the trip else where in the event this becomes reality! Mark

My better half hit a deer a month before Christmas. She said one minute it wasn't there, the next it was. It was at night on country road she didn't know the name of (don't ask me why), so when she called to tell me she hit a deer, it took a while to find out exactly where she was. She had just taken a new job about an hour away from our home and was trying a "new" way home but didn't know the street names (you know how the country roads are all 250 S and 420 W, none of which make any sense to me). The car had about $3500.00 worth of damage but she was ok. The deer actually got up and ran off into the woods, I'm sure it must have been pretty banged up also! Mark

Not necessarily the best but James Moody has a great presence on stage. I just saw Tom Harrell, not great stage presence but a presence none the less. Mark
