  1. Wow, I must be completely different! I can't wait to find a place where I can sit for an hour or so and not have to talk or listen to someone talk!!! From what I've seen in many clubs, some of the people continue to talk and laugh all through the performance, which pisses me off!
  2. I wouldn't (personally) let the low ratings scare me away. If I have not heard the music I would probably take a chance based on my knowledge of the artist and the sidemen playing with him. There have been so many recordings that have not received good reviews, that I thought were great (I hope this doesn't say too much about my taste in music). I have taken the chance on a ton of recordings that I have never heard or maybe I liked the way one of the sidemen played and have had very few that I have been dissapointed with. You have to remember that these reviews are just one persons opinion and everyone has different taste. It's not to say that a critics opinion is wrong, as some are right on the money, I just wouldn't base my purchase solely on their thoughts. Maybe you should be a critic, as I have bought a few recordings based on your feeling and have liked them all. Mark
  3. I went to see George Coleman in Chicago (Jazz Showcase) a few weeks ago and there were about 50 people in attendance. The owner told me that one night during the week, he had about 17 people for 2 shows and this is George Coleman! I have been to a ton of shows there and they do sell out on occasion but many nights there may be 50-100 people total at the show I attend. Benny Golson and the Dave Holland Quartet will be playing soon and I'm sure the attendace will be better but I'm always freaking out at the low attendance during some of these shows. You've got to wonder how long some of these "jazz only" clubs can hang on! Mark
  4. Thanks to all that responded!!! The calculator is good to have, I appreciate it. Claude, Yes I have a scanner but these are original jazz photographs and the quality of a scanned image is no where near the original but again, thanks for the idea. I will go with Wolff's plan! Mark
  5. I need to ship some jazz photographs to a few people on this board that live in Europe. What is the most economical way to ship them and get them there in a reasonable amount of time and in one peice. The post office says if it's under four pounds, it about $23.00 which is crazy. Is there a better way??? Thanks, Mark
  6. Deus62, I have several autographed album covers that are framed. I buy my frames from a mail order frame store, as I am a photographer and am always framing something for myself or someone else. I think you can get a lower cost than they are selling them for. Just my opinion! Mark
  7. Has anyone in the US ordered from Amazon UK before. Although I have bought from Amazon many times, I haven't purchased from the UK. How is the delivery time, how about exchange rates (I threw out todays newspaper). Thanks, Mark
  8. I visited Paris a few years ago and bought several copies of "Jazz Hot" and a few others from a street venfor for a buck or two each. I not sure why, other than to look at the photographs and old ads for new releases and jazz clubs (I can't read French!) Mark
  9. I would second themusicresouce.com, I have ordered from them many times with no problems! Mark
  10. I just got back from the Frank Morgan show in Chicago. Man, that guy can still play!!! He played a very nice rendition of Parker's "Billie's Bounce" as well as Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Mood" plus many others. He was in great spirits and looking well, smiling while not playing, seated on a drum stool instead of standing. He played with a local rhythm section consisting of Willie Pickins on Piano, Robert Shy on drums and Larrry Gray on bass; they were smokin'!!!!! I shot a ton of photographs and give him one from a previous performance last year. He did mention again that it's great to be alive (I would agree). He seems to really be at peace with himself, looks good and sounds great. Since I don't know how to post my photographs on the BB, if anyone want to see any of the photographs, send me your email address (some already have) and I will share some with you. Mark
  11. It's good to see there are some fans out there. Tom in RI, yes I will also be photographing him tomorrow. I have made some great photos of him a couple of years ago. PM me with your e-mail address and I'll show you some. Thanks for all who replied to my question! Mark
  12. I'm going to see alto player Frank Morgan tomorrow. Anybody seen him before? I've seen him once before and throught he was preetty good. I had a short conversation with him after the show and told him it was good to see him playing so well, he replied "it's just good to be alive". I'm not sure if he was just ailing at the time or referring to past "demons". Mark
  13. Thanks Catesta, I didn't look there, although I did look on regular ebay. Mark
  14. I am looking for a copy of Stanley Turrentine's Joy Ride. If there is any one that can part with one, please send me a PM and let me know what you want in return. Thanks in advance for all who reply!!! Mark

  16. Any album by Dave Pell!
  17. I got a chance to see, photograph and talk with George Coleman last night in Chicago. He played with a local but very tight rhythm section (Willie Pickens on Piano, Larry Gray on Bass and Dana Hall on Drums). George played the "Miles Davis" Songbook and a handful of other tunes and sounded very good. The crowd was sparse with only about 60 people there. I talked to him for awhile after the show and gave him a photograph I made of him a few years ago. I told him I was from Indianapolis and he began to talk about some of this friends that grew up there (Jimmy Spaulding, Freddie and Slide, Mel Rhyne and Buddy Montgomery, it was very cool, the feelings he has for these guys.....then the strangest thing happened; Some guy in the audience asked all the band members if he could jam with them on one song after the show (when the other patrons were gone). They actually said "yes". I stuck around for this guys "audition" and he was pretty good. While he was playing, the bassist had a grin on his face as if to say "hey, this guys better than I thought. I'm not sure what the deal was, maybe it was just this guys dream to play with these guys, or maybe his 15 minutes of fame. If "this guys" is a member of this BB, step up and share your story!!!! Mark

  21. Late, This is a great recording. Phil's a very cool guy, I've met him a few times and have photographed him on several occasions. I would certainly recommend all of his recordings, very underrated in my opinion. Mark

  24. Matt, I was also at the 9/14 show but it was the 4:30 show, which was very good, although there weren't many patrons in the house. Joe Segal told me it has been a pretty slow week. I made a few nice photographs of the guys and also spoke to them, very friendly indeed.
  25. Thanks to all, I just got then at CD Universe for $8.39 each, that's much better! Mark
