Thanks for the post Lazaro. I went to Joe's Birthday Party at Joe's Bebop Cafe last night (just rolled back in town this morning). A very fun, well attended invite only party with Ira Sullivan hosting a big jam session with many of Chicago's finest local musicians; Joe even sat in on drums for a couple tunes. Johnny Frigo came up on stage to read a couple poems.....very cool! A week before, Joe told me that Lou may not make the Symphony Center show this Friday as his wife of many years had passed away . I forgot to ask Joe for an update last night. I'll post some photos from the party this evening. Regarding the big event this Friday, I have the opportunity to photograph the sound check and the show. Jazzkrow is flying in from Portland to attend, as will Sal. Hopefully some of the other guys in the neighborhood (Larry Kart) and the neighborhoods a little further away (Chuck, Uncle Skid) can attend. m~

Very sad indeed! My girlfriend bought me an original, signed photo of this image many years ago. I traded letters with Mr. Gottlieb around that time and more recently with his son; never had the opportunity to meet him m~

Thanks to all! Had a great day other than working for much of it. Went to a late Italian dinner followed by a neighborhood wine bar; great wine but horrible music . Went Birthday shopping for my new lens this morning....24-70 f2.8 L series.....very nice although a little pricey! Got an invite to Joe Segal's birthday party this coming Monday so I'll put it to good use! Thanks again! Mark

...thanks for all for the warm wishes, kind words and delicious cakes....can't wait to dig in!!! I'm stuck in the office for most of the day but my better half is taking me to dinner this evening! Going shopping for a new lens tomorrow and off to Chicago and New York next Friday for 8 days of great jazz....at least one show per night and two shows on at least two night.....cannot wait!!! I saw him in Chicago a few weeks ago and was rather dissapointed. Although the guy has the chops and can pretty much play what he wants, what he's playing (as a leader), I'm not sure I want to hear. I think to this day, he is out to prove he can play and wants to show it on e...v...e...r...y..........s....i....n....g....l....e.......n....o....t....e! He had congo player Juna Santos with him who I enjoyed!!! Also saw James with the Newport All-Stars two years ago and loved him! Most of his recordings are hit and miss with me. I just want him to PLAY!!! m~
