That would really have been interesting to hear Dave Young. Loved his contributions to the pre-Dolphy George Russell albums he took part in. A passionate voice! If he ever shows up at one of the gigs you're covering, would like to get your impressions! I've actually seen him perform with this group several times, not sure why he didn't show up for this gig. David's a great guy, wonderful player and very humble. Although he'll answer questions, he doesn't really like to talk about himself. I saw a lady doing a documentary on Wes Montgomery ask David a few questions which he answered but when she asked if she would stop by his house and film a short interview of his time playing with Wes, David was a little embarrased and said he would prefer not to. Killer on the other hand never stops talking (probably even is his sleep) and stepped in to help the lady out. m~

Thanks Brownie, lots of fun! Mel is playing a lot more locally and Ray always has many interesting stories to share.....lots of history there. Tenor player David Young (George Russell/Duke Ellington) was suppose to sit in as well but couldn't make it.....fun nonetheless!!! m~

I have to agree. Not nearly as impressive as Hank Aron's passing Ruth's record. What would really impress me is if someone could surpass Ruth's HR record not only without steroids, but while smoking, boozing, and eating to excess. That would truly be something. Why? Should this be the model for all baseball players to follow? Bruce, I hope Barry swats past the record. The media is completely anti-Barry. He may have used steroids but so did Sosa, Palmero, and McGuire, amongst others. The guy is not the most personable fellow in the world, but he's had a great career and has worked hard. Go Barry!

Just returned from two nice sets from Killer Ray Appleton and Mel Rhyne at the Jazz Kitchen. Here are a few photographs from those shows. m!

Just saw this thread ....wonderful musician, great loss!

I went to see Melvin Sparks B3 Trio last night, excellent show. A friend of mine (Rob Dixon) sat in on Tenor for several tunes. Anyone here a fan of Melvin? Mel Rhyne showed up for a few minutes but the next time I looked up he was out of there. Here's one of my images from the show. m~

Cecil appears to be in good spirits and loves the chance to play, he's just 84 long years old and it takes it's toll on you....hard to believe with the great health care these guys got over the years. m~

I was in NYC this past week and was heading back to the hotel to drop off some things and came across a bunch of people hanging around the back of the Ed Sullivan Theater where they film the David Letterman show; I asked what was going on....apparently TC was filming the Letterman show that day and he was suppose to be coming out soon. I hung out for a few minutes and out comes Jamey Oliver (the naked chef with clothes on) and then TC comes through the door.......people screaming "Tom, we love you" and shit like that......creepy~ I managed to get off a few shots before getting the hell out of there. Hundreds of people, blocking the street......going crazy.....Tom working the crowd with that million dollar smile, signing autographs and posing for pictures! Feel free to print this picture off to use as a litter box liner or cover for you dart boards! m~

.....I don't use flash and Cecil has actually gone blind over the past year or so; I'm not to blame for that! Although I was thrilled to see Cecil at the Kitano, he did not play well. Many short, painful solos and Cecil acknowledged to me that he was not playing well and hadn't played for the past couple months. It was a thrill to speak to him, wonderful guy. I belive Eric Alexander really loves this guy and is doing all he can to keep him playing. Cecil told me Eric gives him energy! Anyway, here are a few images from the show. m~

i am really bothered by this. i think we, as an organized jazz community should do something. no shit so mr. 26 posts, that's the best you can do??!! ....WTF???
