  1. w/ Rob Brown, my man Flip Barnes & Hamid Apr. 10 Portland, OR: Creative Music Guild presents at the Fez Ballroom Apr. 11 Seattle, WA: Earshot presents at the Tractor Tavern
  2. I don't think I've missed one of Jim's birthday threads yet, at least since he became an auxiliary Al, and I'm not about to start now. Jim, you are sooooooooooooo OLD. Happy birthday, dammit.
  3. Nope, they're joined at the hip. You must hear Quartet Noir, if you haven't already. And L'ENIGUEMATIQUES, or however the hell you spell that, has some of the finest percussion work I've ever heard. You probably have those already.
  4. It's something I said at the Blue Note board in early 2001 referring to a just-released reissue. I'm as surprised as you that "Waffles" has taken off like it has.
  5. other than the original World Pacific 1242 LP from 1958? Thankee.
  6. Oh, John, Late hipped me to Deals... about a year ago and it was some of the best hippin a hipster like Late's yet to hip. I have yet to hear any other Assif. That Birds and Blades disc(s) is truly phenomenal if you're into Guy's playing. Same ol' Evan Parker though, not that that's a bad thing.
  7. Both!!! I think Higgins is particularly inspired, whereas Spaulding sounds like he's trying to blow all the wax outta his alto. I'll grant you that his flute playing on the second track (name escapes me) is sublime. But beyond that, he sounds like he's trying to out-Ornette Ornette! Oh my fuck. We're due for another beer I guess.
  8. Man, you and I is in COMPLETE disagreement on this one! re: Spaulding or Higgins? You're wrong either way.
  9. Actually, what I saw on those Anchorman clips wasn't anything I've already come to expect from Farrell. Not that that's a bad thing, because he is still tremendously funny and it will probably be a while before he needs a new bag. I really liked him in ELF because he actually had a character he was able to work with on another level than straight-up comedy. I hear you guys on his SNL DVD. The Bob Goulet doing hip-hop classics almost killed me. POPPAH!
  10. And your choice of weapons? I was thinking keyboards, but I normally fight my battles vicariously through others so I'm at a loss. btw, I reevaluated my opinion on this disc last night on my way home from getting smoked in a racquetball tourney. James Spaulding was the friggin TRUTH. Still can't get with it otherwise. Higgins sounds bored.
  11. Chuck, clearly we must fight to the death.
  12. never cared much for this disc. What's all the hubbub?
  13. I can't fucking wait. Vince Vaughn's character looks priceless.
  14. Thanks, Chuck. I have trouble with the fine print. These sides are glorious.
  15. Deus, I'm curious about some of these "hotfixes". Does your government do any subsidizing for private education? I work for the Navy, where we are experiencing our 6th major reorganization of training philosophies in 30 years (!). You can learn about some of it her, if you're interested: http://www.npdc.navy.mil/
  16. Government interference is an oxymoron in my field, considering I work for the government. Can't relate on the other issues because of that. Most of the teaching I have done has been within extended (6+ month) curricula. Teaching each topic only once in each 6 month period hardly keeps me on top of the material, but it does allow time for researching trends and new developments. What makes the job great is those occasions where you see the light bulb illuminate over a student's head, washing out the frustration of his/her "not getting it".
  17. Any discographical help with this would be appreciated. I have the 70's Blue Note series LP's (2), which lists the personnel and dates, but I'd like to know more about these sessions. What label were they originally issued on? Thanks.
  18. found it! Thanks, guys. Wasn't too hard... I figured it couldn't have come that long after the Brilliant Corners topic. In looking around I realize that: 1) I needed a life in 2000. I posted a shitload back then. 2) That board was a lot of fun. 3) I need a life in 2004. SOMETHING BLUE JOTW BIG 6 JOTW
  19. RT, how did you find that Blue Note thread? I'd love to read the one on Paul Horn's SOMETHING BLUE again.
  20. I can't think of an instance where the theremin has been used in a jazz combo of any size. Jazz-BASED music, on the other hand... I've seen one particularly talented theremist (thereminist? theredoctor?) do wonderful things with it, in Johnny's Monktail large group, in fact.
