    EAI

I agree. Most of the bickering and put downs over at JC have nothing whatsoever to do with music of any genre. People just have problems with each other and choose to poison threads repeatedly with their bickering. It is really annoying. There has been some discussin of eai in the Funny Rat thread here, but not a whole lot. My impression is that a few people here (myself included) are very interested in eai. I think the discussions over at JC are as well informed and interesting as any I have come across, with the exception of the bickering mentioned above. I Hate Music (a tiny little division of Bagatellen) also has some people who are extremely knowledgeable and interested in eai. Personally I have a much harder time getting into the Japanese scene versus the stuff coming out of Vienna. In addition to the musicians Jared listed I am also really enjoying releases by Martin Siewert, Martin Brandlmayr, Burkhard Beins, Marcus Schmickler, Thomas Lehn, Kevin Drumm, efzeg, dieb13, MIMEO, etc.... One of the problems with discussions of "eai" is the extremely wide range of sounds that can all fall under that umbrella term. Good Morning, Good Night has very little to do with AMM has very little to do with efzeg has very little to do with MIMEO, especially for someone who is new to this type of music.
  2. So was my dad, back when he was in the service. I sit in an office writing and negotiating contracts. I get to listen to a lot of music while doing so, which is really nice.

I think 'fukyo' translates as madness. I wouldn't put it past Zorn to have the other idea in mind, however.

Also, an interesting new release from trumpeter Greg Kelley on Fargone records. I'm not familiar with the label. Almost two years ago, improv trumpeter Greg Kelley released a pair of anonymous CD-Rs under the moniker the Peeled Ones. He made a webpage, sent out press releases, and received NO orders for the debut albums from this previously unknown and mysterious group. The discs, which almost nobody heard at the time, were wildly different from Greg's usual work: one disc of melancholic synth meanderings (I) and one disc of shredding guitar overload (II). This year, the Peeled Ones saga came full circle when Greg decided to record a third installment, returning to his synthesizer for a gorgeous and incredibly realized improvisation. This lavish package includes "reissues" of the two original, ultra-obscure Peeled Ones albums on the first disc, and Greg's fantastic new recording on the second disc. Each disc comes in its own cardboard slipcase with individual artwork (featuring creepy photos selected by Greg) and the whole thing fits in an oversized box along with an essay by Mr. Kelley himself and more haunted pictures. Greg Kelley fans, this is not to be missed; this box is a different and unexpected side to one of modern improv's most versatile and consistently rewarding musicians. LIMITED TO 120 COPIES.

there is quite a list of upcoming discs posted on the Tzadik site. Two that caught my eye are an archival 2cd set of alternate takes of Masada tracks: Masada: Sanhedrin [#7346-2] Twenty-nine sterling studio performances never available before from what many consider to be one of the most important instrumental ensembles of the past quarter century. Over two and a half hours of rare alternates, many even more exciting than the original releases, were handpicked by Zorn from the legendary sessions of 1994-1997 and are accompanied by a lush booklet filled with photos, scores, written tributes and remembrances. This pioneering band, that spearheaded Radical Jewish Culture and helped bring Jewish music into the 21st Century, continues to inspire Jews and music lovers the world over with an original musical language of honesty, imagination and originality drawing on many pasts and looks toward a myriad of futures. This is where it all began. and, what could be very interesting, ideed, a solo trumpet disc from Toshinori Kondo: Toshinori Kondo: Fukyo [#7255] One of the most important musicians in Japan, who has collaborated with just about every major music maker in the avant garde since the early 1970’s, Kondo has been splitting his time between Tokyo and Amsterdam for the past ten years. A master of trumpet electronics, this unique recording, created expressly for Tzadik, showcases his extreme trumpet techniques in a series of fascinating miniatures. The trumpet as you’ve never heard it before via the personal and intense vision of one of Japan’s greatest international musical treasures. I'm hoping the title of the Kondo disc has a real Japanese translation and isn't a bad pun on an english expletive.
  6. I don't think this has been mentioned yet: emusic has now added the Aum Fidelity label. There are some great albums to be found here. 7. I've asked B3-er to delete or edit that asinine post. If he does, could anyone who has quoted it also please delete it from their post?

    Hugh Ragin

I'm not familiar with much of Ragin's work but one disc that I love is Open Systems, on Marge. This one features Ragin with Assif Tsahar, Peter Kowald and Hamid Drake. I'll have to explore more of his work. Revelation sounds like a good place to start.
  9. pm sent!
  10. I can step in if impossible, ubu and b3-er are not ready yet. However, they should get first dibs.
  11. What browser are you using? I'm using Firefox, which blocks all popups, so I only get the PM popups at work, which is on IE.
  12. I've got to go with the Patriots. For me, it comes down to the two rings they already have. As good as the Steelers are, the Patriots always find a way o win when it counts. This should be a far better game than the Superbowl.
  13. yes, that's the one. I highly recommend this one, too.

I don't know anything about Lazro but a quick search over at Jazz Corner turned up a few hits. One of them included a link to a site that has a video clip of him playing live.

I know a further thunmbs up from me is not needed but if you like Ayler you will love this CD (espsecially if you enjoy Vibrations). just to throw my two cents in: I'll second (or third) what JAW and Gary said. This disc is fantastic! Essential listening if you are a fan of Ayler. Thanks again for recommending this disc, J.A.W.!
  16. On behalf of the collective board I would like to apologize to member "lp" for not starting a thread (which made it to at least ten pages" in the "New Release" section on a series of albums that were released, according to AMG, seven years before this board was created. We should all hang our heads in shame. I think we should start things off with a discussion of that upcoming new release "Livery Stable Blues / Dixie Jass Band One Step" by the ODJB. Once the thread has reached ten pages and member lp gives us all his approval, we can move forward to some more current new and upcoming releases. I'm really looking forward to discussing upcoming and new releases from 1919!

depending on your perspective, of course. I'd recommend the Stangl, the Polwechsel, the Earl Howard, and the Pair A' Dice I almost bought the Polwechsel until I realized it had been reissued by hat and I already own the material.

Yes, I've heard the electronic works disc. It's not terribly interesting, except for the short track "Chitterlings". I was hoping someone would say that. I was really tempted to pick them up, but really need to cap my cd buying this month.

see above: although I lied when I said I wouldn't be ordering anything. I ordered the Burkhard Stangl disc, Gerry Hemingway's Slamadam and the Frisque Concordance disc. Has anyone heard the two Gerry Hemingway solo discs and have an opinion on their worth?
  20. For anyone interested in checking out this band / album Exploding Customer have an mp3 from this disc and two new, unreleased tracks available for download on their website.

    Funny Rat

Exploding Customer, who released a great album on Ayler records, have mp3s of two new, unreleased tracks available on their website. On another board Jan Strom of Ayler records posted that their album sold really poorly, which is hampering the release of a new album. That is really a shame.

no to all. Where would you recommend starting with Bailey to someone with open ears?
  25. John B

    Funny Rat

Nope, but as I said, I listened to his London Jazz Fest 04 concert (or parts of it, 55 or 60 minutes), and I like that well enough to consider getting into Braxton a bit... will spin them soon! If you decide to start exploring Braxton a few of his Hat's (Basel and Dortmund) are mid-priced now and excellent starting points. The quartet sets on Leo (Coventry, Birmingham, London) are also fantastic.
