I'll have to disagree with everything you said here, with the exception of "time will tell." I think it is an easy assumption to make that there are less musicians trying to "say" something than in the 40's 50's or 60's. IMO they are still out there, making fantastic, powerful, emotional music that has, again, IMO, quite a lot to say. The one difference might be in the level of publicity they get and the lack of mass commercial support for this music. It is also easy to look back on those salad days and forget that, sometimes, it takes historical perspective to appreciate what those musicians were saying and doing at the time. Remember, a lot of people *hated* what Trane was doing with Miles, for example. As you said, time will tell. In a few decades people will probably look back on these days and agree that giants still walked the earth. In the meantime we should all just enjoy the music. I think I will spin Brotz' Never Too Late But Always Too Early tonight. Try that for some fantastic Drake / Parker

O'Neal's Porch is essential listening. To clarify the AMG review, this was initially released on Centering and quickly went OOP. It has since been reissued on Aum Fidelity.

Thank you! I knew it was one of those discs but could not remember which on. RVG it is.
-
Confession time: I have never heard Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder. I now have a chance to pick up either the RVG or the earlier cd version. My question: I seem to recall that this was one of those discs where people seemed to think that the RVG was not an improvement on the original cd issue. Am I remembering correctly? Or should I just grab the RVG and be happy? thanks!

Aggie - it is good. It took me longer to get into it than their first disc. If you like the first album I highly recommend grabbing a copy. I saw this band live in a small club in Boston a few years back and thought that they smoked the discs live. I keep hoping this group will tour again but don't have my hopes up. This morning: Lee Morgan - The Procrastinator Lee Morgan - The Rumproller Lee Morgan - Infinity Tsahar / Ragin / Kowald / Drake - Open System
-
I have yet to find a Rabih Abou-Khalil disc that I did not like. In a similar (oud) vein I would also recommend Anouar Brahem - Astrakan Cafe and Le Pas Du Chat Noir, both on ECM.

There is another disc on Peter Gabriel's Real World Label called Passion Sources that compiles many of the artists and songs that inspired Gabriel when he created his music for Passion. Grab a copy of that disc and you'll have quite a few artists to start exploring. Most of the middle eastern music I know has vocals, which should not stop you from exploring it. My first recommendation (with vocals:) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Shahen Shah. Just an incredible album!

Mobley - No Room for Squares Mingus - Blues and Roots Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Miles - It's About That Time - Live at the Fillmore East and a real sleeper for those of you who are in to slightly more "out" fare: Tsahar / Ragin / Kowald / Drake - Open Systems Killer disc with some of my favorite Kowald so far as well as great performances from all involved. I've not been a huge fan of Assif Tsahar but this disc smokes! I played it twice straight through driving up from Boston last night, which is very rare for me.

Who wants Dmitry to pick the AOTW sometime soon???
John B replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
I voted "Yes," but my chad was dangling and I'm not sure if that will disqualify my ballot. -
I've been meaning to give this disc a spin recently. This will give me an excuse to do so and to participate in AOTW for the first time. B)

I find it funny that, not so very long ago, Tomatbluenote stated unequivocally that BN was not going to release an RVG of Blue Train as the "Ultimate" release was not so very old and already had upgraded sound. As much as I enjoy this session I will not be shelling out $$$ for the RVG. I'll be happy with my late 80's release and will put the money to a disc I don't already own.

"from the back cover: This is the only record that has been prepared strictly with the male in mind. The masculine approach is reflected in every aspect, including the musical selections, manual terminology, and use of a male in the manual illustrations."
