  1. By the way Larry, I happened to find it in a local Borders that actually had a stack of copies. I kind of assumed that most of them did. Oh, well.
  2. I thought it was the comic book Herbie, with the lollipops.
  3. Well, the Aladdin recordings were made at the same time. The Modern recordings were also recorded in the Gold Star studios toward the end of Lightnin's affiliation with that company. For my money, the absolute pinnacle of Lightnin' might two precious tracks that he recorded for an obscure label in the mid-1950s (I forget the same right now. It is three letters, something like TNT) : Leavin' Blues and Moanin' Blues. Document issued them on CD with some other mostly strong material on a compilation called "The Remaining Titles: Volume 1." Lightnin' plays unusually distorted guitar on these two tracks, and that seems to inspire him to new heights. These sides are absolutely drenched with blues feeling. Thanks for this recommendation, ordered that one now. I ordered it too and my copy just came in yesterday. Great stuff.
  4. Bumping this up 'cuz I like Shelly Manne.
  5. Just want it known that I bought mine as a brand new hardback right from the shelf of a real, physical bookstore, just like in the days of old. It was and is worth every penny.
  6. Sad news. RIP, Jimmy.
  7. On the other hand, there are times that I could swear someone is running around America stealing brains, or shrinking them.
  8. So glad that he is still with us. Happy Birthday Mr. Griffin! And many more!
  9. I think I liked the early episodes best. Actually, I'm more of a "Bit of Fry and Laurie" guy myself.
  10. Thank God for this thread! It's been too long since I listened to some Lightnin'!
  11. Perhaps favorite surviving tenor player (along with Rollins)... Anywho, time to play some Griffin in honor of the octagenerian. 80!! Wow!
  12. For years I said that if you just ignore the editorial section the Wall Street Journal was one of the best newspapers in the country. With Murdoch at the helm I doubt it will remain so for very long.
  13. I have Just The Way It Had to Be, on LP, it's an excellent live date from Shelley's Manne Hole in 1969, with Teddy Edwards, Ray Brown and Monty Alexander. Big fan of "statements" here ! It is a KILLER session. Everyone should listen to it. There's a song called "A Thrill from the Blues" which is one of my all time favourite jazz track...its groovy, its funky, its intelligent...And the rest of the record is brilliant as well ! RVG recording, ENORMOUS sound. You can buy it right away !!!!!!! Sounds like a must. I loves me some Milt.
  14. Give me Jonathan Richman or They Might Be Giants any day.
  15. Been spinning a lot of Nick Lowe albums lately, for some reason.
  16. It's inspired me to dig out my old vinyls of Lowe's other albums and give'em a spin. Nice! Party of One is still my favorite after the first two. Really glad I still have that Live Stiffs LP.
  17. You'd think being in Tornado Alley you'd be spared having to worry about earthquakes as well. Sheesh!
  18. Wait till you're done playing the disc and have to fold it back up. I can barely fold a shirt, so some days it takes me 2 or 3 tries to fold it up right. Tell me about it. I've folded the damn thing the wrong way at least six times already!
  19. I get ya; CD's are "OLD digital." (BTW, I always preferred analog to analogue.)
  20. "Depressing"?? WTF? I love it too. How could anyone find it depressing?
  21. Got 'em...and they are great. But I haven't yet heard any Lightnin' Hopkins I DON'T like.
