  1. Been going the anti-box route, listening to Mosaic Singles a lot lately.
  2. You're right, my mistake. I thought it was one of those early Conns without the typical transparent spine. As a matter of fact, my copy has the white spine typical of the first few Connoisseur issues. Go figure. Mine does, as well. Very nice record, sort of similar to "True Blue" in the sense that it's nothing revolutionary, just really well-played hard bop. There's something so "in the groove" about this session; I love it. In the sense you mention of being really well-played, melodic, hard bop, True Blue, Flight To Jordan, and Davis Cup are among my favorite Blue Notes.
  3. I've got to get this!
  4. Sheesh, they're dropping like flies! Who's next?
  5. They could probably sqeeze them onto 10 CD's, which would be no worse than the Mildred Bailey set. ( )
  6. Don't forget to take the Cliff Walk in Newport, RI. You get the view of ocean and rocks, and also get to see a bunch of the biggest robber-baron mansions (or "Summer cottages") for free.
  7. Bit of a shock---I didn't hear that he had leukemia. Still, I have to agree with Allen Lowe's comments; Snyder's cluelessness was legendary, and Ackroyd's SNL impression was spot-on. RIP

  9. Don't forget to visit Stereo Jack's in Porter Square, Cambridge. A great jazz store!
  10. They also did a piece once about a guy buying the Ken Burns 5-disc jazz box and not being able to get through it. Got to hand it to those Onioners (Onionsters?).
  11. I sometimes forget...but not for long.
  12. I love Battle Cry of Freedom, though I must admit it's been a heck of a long time since I read it. Glad to hear that you're digging it.
  13. You won't! It's a FANDAMNTASTIC set of music! I have to second that. It's a big set, but a great one.
  14. This might be my favorite film ever. I'm very glad to own the Criterion edition. I do wonder what someone who hasn't seen his other films would make of Playtime, especially on a small screen at home. I highly recommend seeing this in a theater first if at all possible. I was lucky enough to see this for the first time at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston projected in 70mm. Same here. That's got to rank as my all-around most amazing viewing of Playtime.

  19. Mosaic Future Projects page Man, this sounds good.
  20. I was 8. Watched it on TV and found it very exciting.
  21. I love Lucky. All the stuff recommended so far is good, particularly Tricotism and Lord, Lord Am I Ever Gonna Know? You can't have too much Lucky Thompson!
  22. Nice article. Thanks!
  23. Maybe it was later, but (the Great ) Mike Douglas had Zappa (and Lennon, and Chuck Berry, and other cutting edge type people) on his show. It's on YouTube (or at least it was a few months ago). Good ol' Mike Douglas. I used to love watching him.
  24. He's holding that flute like a caveman holding his club.
  25. Thanks, I've already seen Bush smile. (Not a pretty sight.)
