  1. Damned if that thing didn't get me turned on to T-Men, one of my favorite crime B-movies of all time.
  2. Been revisiting some old episodes of Homicide lately. These days, that show would have been on cable.
  3. Season 3 is quite good as I recall. But then, I'm a fan.
  4. At the height of my Vonnegut phase my favorite was Cat's Cradle. What are some of the stories in this anthology? Amazon won't tell me a thing. John D Clark, "Minus Planet" (1937) Fritz Leiber, "Yesterday House" (1952) Larry Niven, "Neutron Star" (1966) Lester del Rey, "The Faithful" (1938) Don Wilcox, "The Voyage That Lasted 600 Years" (1940) - that's as far as I've got! Gee, the only one of those I'm familiar with is "Neutron Star."
  5. What are some of the stories in this anthology? Amazon won't tell me a thing.
  6. That's an excellent biography--I was (and am) somewhat the same way about Elvis, Matthew. It's interesting to read Guralnick's book just for the sense of how and why he became so important to American culture in the late 1950s. Guralnick was born to write this book. Although his other music-related books are worth checking out too.
  7. Ah! Just what I thought!
  8. Mike, what did you think of the latest episode of Breaking Bad? I managed to miss the damn thing.
  9. A long and productive life, to be sure. RIP
  10. Hawk Eyes!---Coleman Hawkins
  11. Hurray!! (Although I find it a bit comical---not surprising, just comical---that selling only 50,000 copies lands you at #2 on the "jazz album chart.")
  12. Nice album. Got myself some more Coleman Hawkins recently: Night Hawk The Genius of Coleman Hawkins
  13. Happy Birthday!!
  14. This has happened before. The stripe always comes back in a few weeks or months. My theory is Jupiter got drunk and disorderly while behind the sun and got one stripe taken away by God.
  15. Clearly, sometimes black holes have to be told that they've had a few million stars too many and ejected from the galaxy.
  16. Oh-oh. I just heard that the original "Law & Order" series has been canceled. This means that the apocalypse is nigh.
  17. Cool little article. Thanks.
  18. The original "Man with the golden arm"! His work was always a bit too fantasy-oriented for my taste, but a massive talent. RIP
  19. I see it this way: It was Gus who gave the order to warn Hank. This gives Hank a better chance against the twins which is ultimately good for Gus any way you look at it. A)Hank and the twins kill each other. Win-win. B)Hank manages to kill the twins and get out unscathed. Unlikely, but then the twins are gone and Hank can be dealt with later. C)Both are heavily injured and easier to deal with down the road. As it happened, one twin dead, the other in ICU and easy to stealth-murder, Hank hanging by a thread. Gus is feeling good. Also, clearly Gus banked on the unprecedented attempt on a DEA-agent's life on American soil to cause a ton of shit to rain down on his Mexican contact, who had become troublesome. My questing is, what if Walter becomes perceived by Gus as a liability? Not good for Walt.
  20. Were you a big fan of "Kolchak - The Night Stalker" back in the day?
  21. Damn, yes! After Hank got the call and was looking around, I was just about ready to crawl out of my skin. Latest episode: Apparently Gus controls the universe.
  22. You'd think he would have known it was coming.
  23. Yeah, that's pretty much what I've heard. Word is the actors all seem to be having a good time, but the film is let down by a weak script. Hardly a surprise.
  24. A lot of people seem to think it was Mike, the PI/fixer guy. On orders from either Gus or Saul. But why would Gus sic the twins on Hank, then warn Hank at the last minute? He wants Hank and the twins to kill each other? I'm not sure. I like the theory that whoever made the call that it came as a result of orders from Gus. The brothers were a definite threat to his interests and were a thorn in his side. Hank was a threat as well and if he and the brothers were to kill each other, it would take care of those threats quite nicely. Yes, Gus certainly loathes the twins. But Hank's beating of Jesse was about to deep-six his career. Gus allowing Walt to bring Jesse into the meth factory-lab saves Hank's career, keeping Hank a threat. If you think about this long enough, your head starts to hurt. (I must say, I sure hope Hank lives. He has become one of my favorite characters. Beneath the Three-Stooges-like bluster, he's actually a really nice guy, and one of the few characters on the show to have a firm moral center.)
