  1. For ages it was unavailable anywhere, until Criterion (God bless them) recently put it out on DVD.
  2. There was something about Lane that made me start feeling sorry for him some time ago. Now I've got even MORE reason to! (Jeeze, that horrible father...!)
  3. Boardwalk Empire is going to be another of those shows that make me wish I got HBO.
  4. When I first read this on the internet, for a couple of seconds I was sure it must be an Onion story.
  5. Lots of excellent suggestions here. I must second the ones for "Out of the Past," "The Big Steal," and "The Friends of Eddie Coyle." His performance in the latter is truly remarkable, one of his best.
  6. "Disco Parade"? I guess every city has it's drawbacks. Glad you had a good vacation.
  7. Me too. And "Serenity." Indeed, "Serenity" is good too. They did a fine job on that. (Although I really hated it that (fill-in-blank-here) got killed.)
  8. Happened to catch part of this and found it reasonably entertaining. The new guy's pregnant wife calling him all the time was a bit much though.
  9. I know what you mean. Depressing, isn't it?
  10. I liked Firefly.
  11. Really was about the females last night. From Sally to Miss Blankenship and almost everyone in between. Loved the closing shot of Joan, Peggy, and Faye in the elevator. And did anyone notice how hard-hit Roger was by Ida Blankenship's sudden death? Not just the reminder of his mortality (though partly that of course) but also, I think, the fact that he once had a dalliance with the "queen of perversion."
  12. that type of writing bad real bad, real dumb I hate it hate it lots
  13. I believe someone posted these on Facebook a while back.
  14. I've long thought of "Sidewinder" as in the "jazz-funk" sub-genre, and don't really give a damn if it's accurate.
  15. But of course. Saw it when it was first shown on television; I forget which year, but I was in high school. Could be the first rock'n'roll mockumentary. Oh, I don't know...they probably said that about Mad Men halfway through the first season.
  16. Loved the episode, even though there was no Roger and no Cooper either. Don seems to be pulling back from the edge.
  17. Thanks. Dang, the season's more than half over already. Seems like it just started.
  18. Very much looking forward to the next episode. What are we up to now, number seven, eight...? Six? I've lost track.
  19. Nick Lowe won't compromise on hummus?
  20. Sabra, my friends. Sabra.
  21. Does Language Shape How You Think? Well, just off hand I'd have to say yes, how can it not, to SOME extent?
  22. Welcome back, Mr. W! And thanks for the music!
  23. Why be embarrassed? I for one would love to hear what old sf book or collection you've been flipping through. (And Old Twentieth is recent, and by a respectable writer as well!) Myself, I've actually been perusing some of the "Isaac Asimov Presents the Great SF Stories" paperbacks that came out during the 80's. Found three in a used bookstore. When they were coming out I turned my nose up at them, partly because I was already familiar with most of the stories, partly the perceived tackiness of the series. (And by the second half of the 80's I was going through a non-sf-reading phase, though I didn't know it was a phase at the time.) Now I marvel at what a good deal these books were; for the price of a cheap little paperback you could get a more than decent little anthology of some of the best sf stories of a particular year, from the late 30's to the early 60's. Wish I'd bought them at the time, though I probably would have sold them by now.
  24. Well, as far as that goes, Roger has already had two heart attacks.
