  1. I bought it, and have listened to 8-9 tracks. It sounds very old school, much more so than their last album. I don't agree that it has better beats than their last album, though. The songs seem shorter and more focused. There's more foul language than on previous releases, it seems. There's at least one track that's political in nature, which is something I don't remember hearing on other albums (there's something about "we got a president we didn't elect) in one of the songs. If you like the Beastie Boys, pick it up. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
  2. Barney Kessel - Feeling Free Kenny Burrell/John Coltrane
  3. Prince Lasha/Sonny Simmons - Firebirds All the Walt Dickersons
  4. My two Yahoo accounts have been very buggy today. I was pleased to see the changes, however. I have been paying for POP/forwarding service from Yahoo, and as a paid user, I now get 2.0GB () of storage space.
  5. Welcome back, everybody.
  6. I saw a sealed copy of this at the Jazz Record Mart in Chicago about a month and a half ago. I highly recommend this album (notice my avatar) to fans of Walt Dickerson, the vibes, or just great music in general. I just checked their website and it's available for order. Somebody jump on this! I wish someone would release his "Unity" and "Jazz Impressions of Lawrence of Arabia" on CD. A board member was kind enough to burn a CD for me from the original vinyl, and these two dates are very good, very much in the same vein as "Impressions of a Patch of Blue."
  7. New this morning: Guy Lafitte - Blue and Sentimental First time I've ever heard this artist. His tone reminds me of Coleman Hawkins. George Daly's Hampton-esque vibes bring a nice texture to the date.
  8. Late 90's for me...1997 or so.
  9. It'll take some getting used to. I'm pretty sure that this first listen was also the first time I've ever listened to Pink Floyd. I liked the song "Money" right away, and I think the rest will grow on me. I bought the hybrid SACD, and the sound seems quite good for something recorded 30 years ago or so.
  10. Just hearing for the first time today: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Miles Davis - Ascenseur pour L'echafaud Buck Clayton One of the nice things about being relatively young and relatively new to jazz is that there's still a lot of music left to discover. So, who or what are you listening to for the first time today?
  11. Love the cover. This was also my first introduction to Booker Ervin as a leader, and it's still my favorite Ervin album. I love the way the album starts out with "Number Two." "Intense" (as the AMG review says) is a great way to describe this number, but it's also a fun number, IMO. Ervin always sounds better on up-tempo numbers anyway; he always sounds really restless on slower tunes.

  13. Good luck with your new endeavors, AB. You'll be missed around here.
  14. No problem, Jim. Most of the covers you posted are Chinese. I've never seen stuff like this, so I find it pretty entertaining too.
  15. I believe the Jacquet set also had other labels' logos on at least one of the discs.
  16. Cute girl. Is she also a ventriloquist? The artist's name is AuYeung Feifei. Inside the heart: "When will he turn around again? The last stop for love"
  17. Thad Jones/Mel Lewis - the Presenting Thad Jones-Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra session.
  18. I always thought Pee Wee was a "he" too! Hot damn, I have learned something from this place!
  19. Andrew Hill - Andrew!!! session
  20. Illinois Jacquet, disc 4. Bought this one right before it went OOP, still haven't listened to the whole thing. What I've heard has been pretty fun, though.
  21. Wow...That was really fast!
  22. Just finished Thad Jones' "The Magnificent, vol. 3" session. Just put on the Stanley Turrentine set, "Mr. Natural" session.
  23. The Dakota is probably the most famous jazz club in town. Check out their website. Looking at Ticketmaster or Citysearch would probably help you out as well. Have fun!
  24. T/K/M - The Warne Marsh session
  25. I loved these gals in "Kill Bill Volume 1" This one is "Mama, Give Me A Guitar" by Jingjing and the Happy Girls Very clever
