  1. I grew up in LA suburbs, and I think I prefer living in the suburbs of a big city. Life is quieter, and if you want the big city, it's close and accessible. I lived in some of the busiest parts of Hong Kong for a time, and the noise (mainly from construction, which never seems to end there) really got on my nerves after a few months. It was great having so many restaurants and stores close by, though.
  2. The site looks great, and nothing looks out of place in Netscape 7.1.
  3. Mosaics I've bought without ever hearing the artist first: Thad Jones Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Duke Ellington Reprise Johnny Hodges Verve Illinois Jacquet Peggy Lee/June Christy Carmell Jones Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band (well, I'd heard Mulligan before, but not in this context) Bennie Green Randy Weston Curtis Amy Gerald Wilson Horace Parlan Curtis Fuller Sam Rivers Chico Hamilton Tristano/Konitz/Marsh (had heard Konitz, but not the others) Mosaics I've bought without ever hearing any of the music first: Hank Mobley Lee Morgan Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Duke Pearson Lee Morgan/Wayne Shorter Paul Chambers/Wynton Kelly Duke Pearson Sonny Stitt Lou Donaldson Woody Shaw Art Blakey Jimmy Smith Bud Shank This is probably most of my Mosaics. Most of my other box sets would also fall into one of the two categories above as well. The Peggy Lee/June Christy is probably the only one out of all of these sets that I really didn't like. For me, these boxes are interesting musical journeys, and I like having the music available to me this way. It really is about the music for me - I haven't even opened the booklet in most of these sets. I make mp3's of all the music, and then rearrange everything into the original album sequence. I like to hear how musicians evolve over time and how they perform with different sidemen. I only started buying Mosaics about two years ago, so it's been an interesting ride. I feel especially lucky that there is still so much music out there for me to discover. I'm still pretty young, and have only been listening to jazz for about seven years now. There is no doubt in my mind that I will continue to buy Mosaics simply based on the quality product they provide. Madness? Maybe...
  4. It was issued in the Connoisseur series a few years ago.
  5. Andrew Hill - Judgment session
  6. Get it while you can. This thing grooves, and has a really cool, spacey vibe to it. I've got a couple of his Prestige albums, and they're nothing like "Moon Rappin'."
  7. Brother Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin' This has to be one of the most pleasant surprises I've purchased in the last five years. I only wish I could find other albums like it.
  8. Dizzy Gillespie/Sonny Rollins/Sonny Stitt - The Eternal Triangle Andrew Hill - Siete Ocho John Coltrane - Blue Train, Giant Steps, Leo
  9. The song search function really blows. It won't even list songs that it lists under albums (try searching for "Esoteric" from "Destination Out" and see what happens). I hope they fix this thing soon - this is one of the most unresponsive sites I've ever used.
  10. hwangg, The Dickerson CD can be found at Jazz Record Mart's site. I saw a sealed copy there a few months ago, and it looks like they still have it. Good luck finding the rest, especially the Schifrin - you won't find it for less than $75. That's the only one I don't have. I'm not willing to spend that much on one CD just to complete the collection.
  11. This is an excellent session. Very quiet orchestral pieces, with a very impressionistic feel to them. McFarland plays vibes on all tracks, if I remember correctly. Nothing cheesy like some of McFarland's later work ("Soft Samba" comes to mind ) on this one. I believe this is the first time on CD for this album, other than in the Bill Evans Verve box, which is how I'm familiar with it. If you're a Bill Evans fan, I highly recommend picking up this album (or the Verve box).
  12. Chico Hamilton - The Original Chico Hamilton Quintet session. Anyone know what that sound on "Caravan" is? It sounds like money coming out of a cash register or slot machine.
  13. I wish being old had something to do with it (I'm 27). I had to get glasses in the 5th grade. I can't see a thing without them.
  14. Very strange. I've had no trouble playing this disc in my computer (Windows XP) or making mp3's from it.
  15. A couple of the new Verve LPR's: Dave Pike - Manhattan Latin Illinois Jacquet - Desert Winds
  16. Johnny Smith, "Designed For You" session.
  17. I wonder if Tom's going to address some of that in his first post. Notice Mike's request that people not post until Tom posts first...
  18. Interesting.... AAJ thread
  19. I need to lose weight. I lost 75lbs on Atkins last year, but then gained back 35lbs when I went off it due to somewhat compulsive eating habits. While the net loss is nice, I still need to lose about 60lbs to get to my ideal weight (which at age 27 is probably not a good thing).
  20. I have it and like it a lot. There's more jazz on this one than on "Zen Meditation" and "Yoga Meditation." I think the sitar and oud work very well on this album. Check out some song samples online before buying if you're wary of these instruments.
  21. I bought it, and have listened to 8-9 tracks. It sounds very old school, much more so than their last album. I don't agree that it has better beats than their last album, though. The songs seem shorter and more focused. There's more foul language than on previous releases, it seems. There's at least one track that's political in nature, which is something I don't remember hearing on other albums (there's something about "we got a president we didn't elect) in one of the songs. If you like the Beastie Boys, pick it up. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
  22. Welcome back, everybody.
  23. I saw a sealed copy of this at the Jazz Record Mart in Chicago about a month and a half ago. I highly recommend this album (notice my avatar) to fans of Walt Dickerson, the vibes, or just great music in general. I just checked their website and it's available for order. Somebody jump on this! I wish someone would release his "Unity" and "Jazz Impressions of Lawrence of Arabia" on CD. A board member was kind enough to burn a CD for me from the original vinyl, and these two dates are very good, very much in the same vein as "Impressions of a Patch of Blue."
