  1. You can definitely do this. I make mp3's from the CD layer of my SACD hybrids without any difficulty, so making CD copies can be done as well.
  2. Here's the exact quote: "The Mosaic Select series was expected to be available at retail approximately one year from release date. Unfortunately the current economics of the retail market prevent us from using the avenue of distribution. Therefore at this time Mosaic Selects will only be available from us; though if things change we would certainly love to obtain wider distribution for these deserving artists and their body of work."
  3. Got the new Mosaic catalog in the mail today. The upcoming Selects are on the cover. Interesting note on the inside - they won't be distributing the Select series at retail for a while. Something about "market conditions" not being right at this time.
  4. I showed my wife Rooster's post with the Girl Scout cookie ice cream yesterday, and she demanded a carton of it, so we picked up the Samoas flavor. I didn't think much of it. It was just vanilla ice cream with chocolate swirls and bits of Samoas in it. There wasn't enough cookie in it.
  5. I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying the clips from the Liebman/Beirach set. I usually can't stand soprano sax, but Liebman is very listenable and this is really excellent music. I might just have to pick this one up.
  6. I bought the Mel Brown, Clark Terry, Yusef Lateef, Gloria Coleman and Archie Shepp, and have been enjoying them all. The biggest surprise for me thus far has been the Mel Brown. If you like greasy music, pick this one up! The Terry is the lightweight in the bunch, for me, with some of the tracks being ruined a bit by lame vocals. I think the nicest thing about this round of releases is that we get to see a different side of Impulse. When I think of Impulse, I generally think of John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders and the like. This round of LPR's shows that Impulse had a lot more going for it than just the avant garde.
  7. Uncle Skid, go for the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh. The Mobley should be around for a while, and with the Tristano set going OOP soon, if you don't like it, you'll be able to sell it for more than you paid for it...and that would easily finance a Mobley box purchase.
  8. I have the Moncur, Jones, Green, Weston, Pearson and Amy sets. I like the Pearson set the least of the three, but only because of the vocals that are found on many of the tracks. Each set has great things about it, even the Pearson set ("The Phantom" session is very enjoyable). I'd never heard any of the music in the any of the sets, save the Moncur, before I bought them, so each contained surprises. The Moncur is probably my favorite, with the "Hipnosis" session being the treat for me. I'd get the Patton if I didn't already have most of the sessions in the box. I'll probably buy it one of these days anyway. I wish they'd done a regular box with more of Big John's work - his music is certainly deserving of that kind of treatment.
  9. Inspired by this thread, I pulled my dusty copy of "My Spanish Heart" off the shelf on Saturday and gave it a whirl. There is a lot of impressive writing and playing on this album, but the voices and synthesizers sound incredibly dated to me, and make the music very difficult to listen to, for me. This album would be wonderful if they could re-record it without all that stuff. I'll admit that I haven't heard too much of Chick Corea's work. I'm most familiar with his work with Blue Mitchell and Cal Tjader, and then a few of his solo albums: "Now He Sings...," "It," "Song of Singing." I really enjoy all of what I have. I've listened to sound clips of his early 70's electronic stuff, and it just doesn't interest me that much. Maybe I'll have to pick one of those albums up sometime, but it's way down on the list of priorities.
  10. I convert most of the CD's I buy into mp3's. If I'm doing something else (listening at work, etc.), then I always just listen to entire albums, without shuffling or programming. If I'm sitting at home and have a little time to mess with playlists, then I'll select single tracks that I want to hear from various albums...But I don't select an entire album and then put it on shuffle. I find that I'm a lot more likely to be choosy about individual tracks when I'm listening to rock/pop music, since I feel that more of the music on most albums from these genres is "filler" than with jazz.
  11. Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? Carcass - Swansong Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile Beastie Boys - Paul's Botique Roy Eldridge - Swingin' on the Town Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin' Groove Holmes - Comin' On Home Sam Rivers - Contours Stone Temple Pilots - Shangri-La-Dee-Da Korn - Issues, Take a Look in the Mirror Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV, Physical Graffiti Tristano/Konitz/Marsh Mosaic Bennie Green Mosaic Randy Weston Mosaic Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire
  12. No problem. I live in Minneapolis, so there are definitely jazz clubs and the like, but live music is something of a problem for me. When faced with the choice of seeing live music or buying CD's, I will choose CD's 99 times out of 100. Also, I have trouble sitting still for more than a few minutes at a time (I have a very strong need to multitask). I went to a jazz festival last year and thought I was going to go insane, and don't know if I'll ever go back to one, it was so difficult for me. Getting in my car and leaving was, sad as it may be, a major relief, even though I heard great music by people like Andrew Hill and Fred Anderson. I'm going to a Herbie Hancock show (Christmas present from my wife) next month, so we'll see how I do with it. The jazz club idea makes me a little uncomfortable too, to be honest.
  13. No problem - I'm 27.
  14. My parents only had an effect on me in the sense that they exposed me to different kinds of music when I was young. I heard everything from Led Zeppelin to Jimi Hendrix to the Beatles to ABBA to Tchaikovsky and so on. Jazz and country were about the only genres that they didn't actively listen to (although, they did have a couple of Wynton and Ellis Marsalis CD's). Anyway, I think that being exposed to different kinds of music made me more open-minded. I found jazz completely on my own, about 6 years ago or so. My first jazz CD was a Lionel Hampton/Oscar Peterson comp, and I loved it from the minute I put it in the CD player. To this day, I have no friends that like jazz and my taste in music is regarded as "weird" by my peers. My age probably has something to do with that.
  15. Word. I'm laying on one right now. Piece of shit.
  16. I just got my Tristano/Konitz/Marsh set, and it's only #4153 out of 7500. Looks like this one is timing out pretty early on. I've got disc one on right now, and I like it. It swings more than I was expecting.
  17. The latin album is "Slightly Latin." I think the Quincy Jones stuff was included in some kind of sampler, but someone else would know this better than I.
  18. Happy Birthday, John. Hope it's a good one.
  19. No variance, thank god. I buy these out of the vending machine at work at least once a week, and they kick ass. $.75 for two Pop-tarts makes them the best deal in the machine. Frosted strawberry and frosted cherry are my favorites.
  20. Not likely. Blank tape is one of the products I work with, and we still sell a ton of VHS tapes, especially when the fall TV season starts. I don't see that demand going away any time soon.
  21. "Soul Sauce" is a classic, and possibly the best of Cal's work on Verve. I think you'll enjoy it if you enjoy "Soul Burst." "Soulbird: Whiffenpoof" would probably be to your liking as well.
  22. My father got Tivo (or something like it) for my mother for Christmas last year, and I must say I was impressed with the recording quality. I think he got it for around $100, as part of a Dish TV subscription. There is an extra monthly fee for Tivo (as has been mentioned above), or a lifetime fee of $299 if you pay it up front, so that's something you'll want to consider as well. Tivo also needs to be plugged into a phone line or broadband network (not necessary with a satellite system). For your purposes, though, a VCR will probably be the most cost effective solution.
  23. Tony, you might try contacting them and making a stink about it. I found during another Tower sale that they often don't even contact the record label or the distributor when they don't have an item in stock, and then they come back later and say they are "unable" to obtain the item you ordered. I had ordered the AEC box, and after waiting for more than a month, I contacted Chuck and he confirmed that Tower had never contacted him or his distributor. I contacted Tower and when I explained this, they found a box in one of their retail stores and honored the sale price. Perhaps bugging them about it might get them to check around their retail stores for a copy of the title you want. Just an idea...
  24. I have one. There's another three on the way, and I'm sure their fate will be the same. Which reminds me, I should probably open up this Miles Davis Prestige set I have laying here too.
