  1. A good compilation disc which succeeds on two fronts: it introduced me to some new music/musicians way back when and it still holds up today as simply an enjoyable listening experience. The MJQ + Almeida track sounds just about how you might expect, and to me, that's delightful. The Hank Crawford track might not have been my first choice as a representative example of his work (the strings here are pretty syrupy), but that's okay. Clarence Wheeler & The Enforcers? I still don't know who they were and the sample of their music here is a groovy flashback to 1970, but ultimately forgettable. Joe Zawinul is always some one I tell myself, "I gotta look into his music more one day", but that day has never really come for me. I'm kind of surprised there is no Coltrane or Herbie Mann here. Granted, they were both included on Vol. 1 (as were most of the musicians on this disc), but they were probably the two most important record sellers on the Atlantic roster and that alone would seem to have merited inclusion here.
  2. The Arthur Lyman disc got me in a lounge music kinda mood, so I pulled out this disc next:
  3. I love the Kenton Christmas album (it's the mellophonium band, one of my favorite Kenton bands) and listen to it at least once each December. I also have this CD, which you might enjoy:
  4. The one movie that makes Plan 9 From Outer Space look like Citizen Kane -- A truly & deeply horrible movie. I watched the Rifftrax version of this and have to agree with their assessment of the film's heroes in their battle against the Psychlos: "It's like the Allman Brothers Band as Special Ops guys".
  5. A Bang & Olufsen promotional item -- a little 38 page hardcover booklet which features mainly ad copy about their products (none of which I will ever be able to afford) and includes a 12 track CD of Duke Ellington material recorded by Mulgrew Miller and NHOP in Copenhagen in 1999.
  6. Well, there is Gary Peacock and Nicki Parrott, not to mention Fletcher Henderson . . .
  7. Yes, it was Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. The link in my original post was to an NPR story about this event. Apparently the wedding was kind of a publicity stunt staged in 1951 to re-energize her somewhat flagging career. She signed a contract to hold this wedding ceremony in Griffith Stadium and then had one year to find herself a husband! " It's unclear whether she knew Russell Morrison before she decided, a year in advance, to get married to someone in Griffith Stadium. But she found her groom, whether she knew him before or not, and he eventually became her manager."
  8. Disc 1 of 4 which includes the unusual album, The WEDDING CEREMONY of SISTER ROSETTA THARPE and RUSSELL MORRISON. How many performers have put out recordings of their wedding ceremony? This one must have been quite an event.
  9. I've been playing the new Bruce Springsteen CD over and over this week. This is really a masterpiece album for him. It's hard to pick one favorite track as there is not a throw-away or weak song in the bunch, but if I had to choose one, this album concluding song simply wows me every time:
  10. From just listening to the song samples available online, I was a little dubious about this album, but it was cheap enough so I took a chance and bought it anyway. So glad I did as this is one of the finest albums I've heard all year!
  11. Blossom Dearie released several wonderful albums on her Daffodil Records label.
