I hate to sound like one of those old geezers who say "they sure don't make 'em like that anymore", but it certainly has been years since I laughed this hard at any sketch comedy show I've seen on TV This is a brilliant combination of very clever writing and very talented performers. Harvey Korman doing a wonderful pseudo-Rex Harrison singing a faux Cole Porter tune is hilariously satisfying. And check out the trumpet "mutes" in the "The Boy In Black Is Blue" number. It's a very funny, very clever little bit that didn't even need to be there, but thank goodness some one thought it up. Ladies & gentlemen, I give you, Hold Me, Hamlet --

Any tips on how to pronounce Roland's last name there? Recently listened to (and highly recommend): Latin-jazz versions of Horace Silver compositions -- works very well!

Speaking as a fan of "West Coast Jazz", I found this album to be pleasant enough, but it honestly felt like "in one ear and out the other" music to me. Nothing really all that memorable is played here, but it would make for jazzy background music. And the album concludes with one of Mr. Baker's more egregious vocal efforts.

Discs 1 & 2 of 4. Red Bird was a record label started by Leiber & Stoller. Probably not recalled very often nowadays, but the label did have some hits, including two huge ones in 1964 -- "Chapel of Love" by The Dixie Cups and "Leader of the Pack" by The Shagri-Las. It has been well over a decades since I last dipped into this set and it's always nice to rediscover the lost treasures in a collection like this. For me, the standout here was Miss Cathy Saint -- Damn, how was that not a hit? Apparently the record was released the week of Nov. 22, 1963 and with a title like that, well . . . But Cathy Saint, man, she deserved to be at least a one-hit wonder and probably a whole lot more.

Duh! is right. But that was my error. This Bill Harris CD actually says "From Boris Rose's Lacquer Master Discs"!

"From Boris Rose's Lacquer Master Tapes". This music is perfect for driving around in the car. Since the audio fidelity is not the greatest, one can imagine being transported back in time, to a time when Alben Barkley still had a job, and one is driving around in a DeSoto listening to these "live" broadcasts. Mr. Harris is accompanied at various times by Horace Silver, Lockjaw Davis, Chubby Jackson, Dona Abney and the surprise for me, drummer Ed Shaughnessy. I never would have pictured the old Tonight Show drummer playing with Horace Silver. The CD also includes some bonus tracks from 1945-46

Yes, per night. I can understand since it is an intimate venue and the shows there should be unforgettable experiences. I forget what the seating capacity at Yoshi's is, but I'm guessing it's under 200 people. If they can only sell 600 tickets over the three nights versus selling maybe 5,000 and up at a one night only show in a larger venue, they would have to raise the prices in order to make it worthwhile for both the performer and the venue. And it is the SF area, so there are plenty folks around here who have that kind of disposable income. I, alas, am not one of them.

I received notice that Van Morrison will be performing for 3 nights at Yoshi's in Oakland next February. Tickets are $250.

I've been watching old episode of Match Game on YouTube and this segment from one episode has got to be one of the funniest game show moments of all time.
