  1. Ira Sullivan - Peace (Galaxy, 1979) The Richie Kamuca Quartet - Richie (Concord, 1977)
  2. Timeless/Solid (Japan) CD reissue
  3. Terrible news. R.I.P.
  4. Fun fact: Sonny Rollins is Clifton Anderson's uncle. And you can hear Anderson as a sideman on a bunch of Rollins' albums, beginning in the 80s. Anderson is a solid soloist -- but I think he's most interesting when he's providing long-toned background textures and counterpoint for Sonny's solos, almost like an organist.
  5. It's turning out to be a singers sorta day for me: Mark Murphy - Jazz Standards (32 Jazz, 2 CDs) 1998 compilation of Murphy's Muse sides I'm a forum member who often "defends" 32 Jazz releases -- since the label regularly comes in for quite a bit of stick around here. My line of thinking: It's better to have the music in some (any!) digital format, rather than the alternative of the music not being available at all, aside from the original LPs. Without 32 Jazz, I'd wager that most of the music that Muse released would still be sitting idle on the shelves, inaccessible to listeners without turntables. To my point, I can't think of any Muse releases that are available for streaming and downloads today that weren't first issued on 32 Jazz. ... And heaven knows that Concord hasn't done anything with the music since they acquired the catalog from Denon. All that said, this Mark Murphy cover looks like it was designed by an inartistic ten year-old using PowerPoint for the first time. Yeesh! It's U-G-L-Y. ... As for the music, it's stellar -- although I would've preferred to have four of the original LPs in their original sequence, rather than this hodge-podge compilation. Even so, I'm still glad that 32 Jazz existed for the short while that it did. The timing was just right for me to discover heaps of terrific music, glorious stuff from the Muse and Atlantic archives. Yes, you can argue with the packaging -- but you can hardly argue with the music.
  6. More Jackie & Roy: Along the lines of some discussion from yesterday... Perhaps this is not jazz. But who cares when the singing is this good? Not me.
  7. Now: with Tommy Flanagan, Reggie Workman, and Joe Chambers Earlier tonight: as heard on Sparks' Legends of Acid Jazz CD
  8. Now on my turntable: One of the best cuts:
  9. Next up: The John Lewis Piano (Atlantic, 1958)
  10. Adding T.L.C. to my "to get" list right now.
  11. That's what Colonel Bruce Hampton did. At the Fox Theater in Atlanta, while performing in concert in celebration of his 70th birthday. Massive heart attack. Over and out !!! I was planning to be there. But I forgot to order tickets, and it sold out. When I heard what happened, I was glad I'd forgotten to get the tix.
  12. About 25 years ago, a friend of mine gave me his old beat-up copy of Hollywood - My Way. When I heard Wilson sing "My Shining Hour" and "Days of Wine and Roses," I was hooked. In my mind, Nancy Wilson and Lou Rawls sorta go together. It seems like they could sing in any style: jazz, blues, GAS, pop, R&B, soul. And they could do it all at the highest level. ... They were like utility infielders. But utility infielders who had MVP-level skills. I think you could also make a case that they were both the end-of-the-line for even the possibillity of doing that sort of thing.
  13. The Jimmy Giuffre 4 - Liquid Dancers (Soul Note, 1991)
  14. Roots & Herbs playlist -- compiled from the Mosaic's Complete Blue Note Recordings of Art Blakey’s 1960 Jazz Messengers: Recorded in February and May 1961, but not released until October 1970. For those who heard this for the first time in 1970/71: Was it strange to be hearing "new" Blakey music that had been recorded nearly ten years earlier? ... And all Wayne tunes, at that! and the other/first Blakey Mosaic:
  15. Lucky you! Those four (?) records he made with Murray for DIW -- with Dave Burrell -- are primo.
  16. LOL !!! Yessir. Those are rock-solid records. ... And Peterson's album Triangular too. Not with the Fo'tet -- but excellent. For whatever reason, I don't associate him with the whole "Young Lions" thing. ... Maybe because I like his music!
  17. In my house too. NO DOUBT!
