  1. Arrived in the mail a moment ago: Mongo Santamaria - Dawn (Amanecer) (Vaya, 1977) I just gave the dusty platter a few spins on my record-cleaning machine -- and the music sounds great.
  2. Good idea. If I enjoy the LP, maybe I'll seek out the CD.
  3. NP: The Louisiana Slim cuts.
  4. Two Newport Allstars LPs due to arrive shortly; primarily for Pee Wee Russell: and Wish I would've gotten the Mosaic Single of this album, but I never got around to it. Oh well. This LP only set me back a few bucks. This record is also on its way: Filling in some Mongo gaps.
  5. Totally agree with felser's call on Capra Black, Glass Bead Games, and the Tollivers. I would also put Harold Vick's Don't Look Back in that same "essential" category. (I'd also add Shirley Scott's One for Me -- but that's been reissued by ARC, not Pure Pleasure.)
  6. Disc 12 EDIT: And disc 15 next.
  7. Prompted by some Fathead discussion elsewhere on the board:
  8. Totally unfamiliar with that one. Adding it to my list.
  9. felser, which of Fathead's albums of the 90s and 00s are your favorites? Just curious. I have a couple of his HighNotes and that's it.
  10. Here's my three posts for this week. There's also brief comments (and YT samples) for each entry at https://jazzinthe80s.blogspot.com/ - Irakere - El Coco (JVC/Milestone, 1982) - George Adams/Don Pullen Quartet - Earth Beams (Timeless, 1980) - David "Fathead" Newman - Lone Star Legend: Still Hard Times - Resurgence! (32 Jazz/Muse, 1997) Two INCREDIBLE saxophonists this week in George Adams and "Fathead" Newman. Dan -- I wouldn't sweat the fact that there hasn't been much overlap. There's nothing empirical or objective about my survey. It's just a list of albums that I particularly enjoy. Our tastes just may be different. In fact, when we get to the end, I'd love to hear about your 80s jazz favorites that you think I've missed. After all, my goal is to "expand my ears," discover new things that I haven't heard before. I may think some of your choices are wonderful -- and some of them might not be for me. That's the fun thing about these sorts of projects. And I think that's the appeal of this forum too.
  11. I'm not familiar with that one. I should check it out. ... I dig Bonner's Steeplechase albums from around that time.
  12. Now on my turntable: Attila Zoller - Memories of Pannonia (Enja, 1986) with Michael Formanek and Daniel Humair
  13. If you don't like Don't Look Back, I doubt you'd like The Power of Feeling -- and vice-versa. In my book, Don't Look Back is one of THE albums of the 70s.
  14. It's only my first listen, but I'm enjoying it. This album isn't quite on the same level as Don't Look Back (Strata-East, 1974). Then again, not much is. For me, it's hitting a sweet spot where jazz, soul, and funk all overlap. Plus, I love Vick's sound ... so I'll likely order it.
  15. Streaming via YT: Sir Edward (aka HAROLD VICK) - The Power of Feeling (Encounter, 1973) I just read that Jazz Room UK is reissuing this on vinyl in a couple months, so I thought I'd give it a listen.
  16. My friend Dan posted these three albums on our 80s jazz blog this week: - Joe Bonner - Impressions of Copenhagen (Theresa/Evidence/Pure Pleasure, 1981) - Carla Bley - Social Studies (WATT, 1981) - Art Pepper - Winter Moon (Galaxy, 1980) I'm planning to post my "weekly three" sometime this weekend.
  17. Killer record.
