Good call, Dmitry. Yes, outstanding. No pianist. Sax trio! CORRECTION: Bill Goodwin is the drummer on this recording, not Manne. I mis-remembered and the Discogs entry incorrectly lists Manne (for the IC issue). The back cover of the Inner City LP actually states that Goodwin is the drummer. Still, primo Tabackin!

Here's what he looks like: I'd estimate that he's 12", maybe 14" tall -- from top of his head to the tip of his tail. The striped tail-feathers are what distinguished the "red shouldered" hawk. When he opens those wings, it's impressive!

The red-shouldered hawk that lives in my backyard makes sure that the squirrel population is "managed" 'round these parts. In our yard, I've stumbled across dessicated squirrel carcasses split open along the belly and picked clean. Only some fur and a bit of bone left. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to watch "our" hawk fall out of the sky and land directly on top of a snake. The hawk grabbed the snake with his talons and away he went. Jaw droppingly FAST and efficient. The creek that runs along the back boundary of our property draws all sorts of wildlife.

Ouch! I like those LPs -- and not for their "somnabulistic" properties. I suppose it's a case of de gustibus and all that. Incidentally, I never got the Select either. But only because the vinyl seemed sufficient.

My go-to for insomnia is usually Ellington. I like to queue up his mood pieces from the 30s. Stuff like "Azure" or "Subtle Lament." The Ellington Indigos album works well too.

Not jazz related, but re: AM radio ... As a kid, I remember listening to Atlanta Braves games on WSB, a clear channel station, while visiting my grandparents in southwestern Pennsylvania, about 500 miles away (as the crow flies) from ATL. Only at night. And you could only get good reception from high points around town. But that was something. Very memorable listening to those games while being so far from home. Announcers were Skip Caray (Harry's son), Pete Van Wieren, and Ernie Johnson.
