  1. Two classics: Rab - Glad you're enjoying Helio Alves' music.
  2. I'm in Chicago for a few weeks. Just arrived on Saturday. Last night, I caught the Corey Wilkes Quartet at the Jazz Showcase. Phew! Glad I went. The band was outstanding. And it was so good to finally be hearing LIVE music again. The rhythm section consisted of Justin Dillard (p) and Junius Paul (b). I didn't catch the drummer's name. But, after poking around on the Web this morning, I'm 99% sure that it was Jeremy "Bean" Clemons. Looking forward to seeing & hearing more shows in the coming weeks.

    Isla Eckinger RIP

Sorry to hear this news. R.I.P.
  4. Eddie Palmieri - Listen Here! (Concord Picante, 2005)
  5. NP: Dave Liebman - Return of the Tenor: Standards (Double-Time Records, 1996) Lieb made this recording after focusing on soprano sax exclusively for about 15 years. Thus the title.
  6. Giovanni Hidalgo - Worldwide (RMM/Tropijazz)
  7. J.P. Torres - Trombone Man (RMM/TropiJazz) Love that.
  8. Congrats on the launch, Dan! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and enjoyment of the music. I plan to give the site a thorough going over, and I expect I'll be seeking out more Percy France recordings in the future.
  9. "Zev Feldman. Calling Zev Feldman. We have a lead for you."
  10. I know that record stores aren't everywhere, like they used to be. But they're still around. In a city like Atlanta, there are four or five shops that I re-visit regularly. Naturally, it wasn't happening during the peak of the pandemic. But now I'm back at it. Of course, YMMV.
  11. Sorry to hear this news, John. Hang in there. I've never been in your exact circumstances, but I have been laid off before. What initially felt like a sucker punch turned out to be a blessing in disguise. ... I hope your experience is the same.
  12. Next up: Kenny Burrell - Up the Street, 'Round the Corner, Down the Block (Fantasy, 1974) This one should be reissued too. Strange that it hasn't been already.
  13. Prompted by discussion elsewhere on the forum that it's being reissued: Kenny Burrell - Night Song (Verve, 1969)
  14. Oh yeah. That's my favorite disc from Haden's Montreal series. NP: A gem!
  15. This again: Paquito D'Rivera & Arturo Sandoval - Reunion - featuring Giovanni Hidalgo (Messidor, 1991) with Fareed Haque, Danilo Perez, David Finck, and Mark Walker
  16. Similarly, several of Hutcherson's recording from the 60s were issued in the late-70s and early-80s. Most notably Medina and Spiral. Two of his best records!
  17. Another enjoyable aspect of physical objects -- whether CD or LP -- is the pleasure of flipping through the bins at record stores and discovering new things you've never seen before or finally coming across things you've wanted for a long while. The "potluck" aspect of it is definitely part of the equation for me. Don't get me wrong: The internet allows us to think "I'd like that," press a few buttons, and it's on its way. That's great. But the hunt, the fun of stumbling across things -- "Yes!!! Look what I found!" -- is nothing to sneeze at.
  18. Primo Tito. Stupendous! Absolutely CRAZY that it sat on the shelf so long.
  19. I didn't know that Starday and King merged. Odd bedfellows, but I suppose that's business for you. I have a George Jones LP on Starday. Inherited it -- and a bunch of other classic country LPs -- from my wife's cousin.
  20. The disc looks like this: It says "1996 Fania Records" -- but there's no Fania logo. Only the Tico logo. BTW, it looks like I got lucky with this CD. I found it in a local shop for $5. There's only one CD listing on discogs, and the asking price is $33.98.
