What Are Your Favorite Jazz Recordings of the 21st Century?
HutchFan replied to HutchFan's topic in Recommendations
Some more grist for the mill. . . At the end of his recent book Playing Changes: Jazz for the New Century, author & critic Nate Chinen lists "The 131 Essential Albums of the Twenty-First Century (So Far)." Even though the title of Chinen's list sorta violates the spirit of this thread ("the essential" compared to "some favorites"), I thought it might generate some more fruitful discussion if I shared it. Sorry to hear this news of his passing. RIP -
Rusty Bryant is awesome. Soul Liberation! Fire Eater! Oh HELL yes.

Still under the spell of this: Each time I listen, I'm more impressed. Up next: Yeah!

I really like this trio's take-your-time-and-smell-the-roses version of "Summer Night." It's different.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
HutchFan replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
I've been meaning to order that set for a long time. Haven't yet though. Need to rectify that. -
I certainly love those two MD records with George Coleman -- My Funny Valentine and Four & More. Unbelievable playing by Big George on that night!!! But I love the band with Wayne too. NP:

From the same session that produced Hells Bells, recorded in London in 1975. For some reason, these solo tracks weren't released until 1991.

Makaya Ntshoko - Makaya & the Tsotsis (Enja)

For Clare Fischer, I'd recommend this one: Clare Fischer and EX-42 (MPS) This LP was originally released on Revelation Records as T'DA-A-A! For Doug Carn, I'd probably go with his classic Infant Eyes:

Superb.

Another of my favorite Beethoven recordings: The best Hammerklavier I've heard, bar none. -

Beethoven: Sym. No. 9 "Choral" - with Kiri Te Kanawa, Julia Hamari, Stuart Burrows, Robert Holl, London Symphony Orchestra & London Symphony Chorus Bought this set to hear Jochum's Bruckner & Brahms, but I've ended up liking it best for his Beethoven. It's a tremendous LvB cycle, and the Ninth is particularly special. -

My Favorite Jazz Albums of 2019 (so far)
HutchFan replied to Robert Middleton's topic in Miscellaneous Music
TtK, it seems like you're intent on denigrating music that many of us care about deeply. Robert started a thread about new jazz. If you don't care for new jazz, that's fine. No one is going to argue that you SHOULD like it. On the other hand, you not-so-subtly remind us again and again that jazz is somehow "not relevant" culturally -- and the implication is that we SHOULD NOT like it. O.K. We get it. Jazz today doesn't have the cultural sway that it once did. Big deal. I don't listen to music as a culture. I listen to it as an individual. And, as an individual, the music means a great deal to me. And, since this board is dedicated to jazz, not surprisingly, it means a lot to MANY of the readers here. So what gives? What are you trying to prove?
