Rodney Jones - Articulation (Timeless, 1978)

No, I don't think doing what I did is the "right thing" -- and I'm all for exposing young people to diverse types of music. But I don't think it's "wrong" to give a teenager a big Weather Report box either. I just followed my nose and ended up where I am. I'm just saying that there's nothing wrong with that -- either in my case or others'.

Based on your recommendation, soulpope, I was just doing a bit of reading on Yellin -- including his obit. (He died last year.) One of the sentences from the obit explains the meaning of this CD's title: "Survivors include his wife, Jane Oriel of El Cerrito, California; his daughter and son-in-law, Allegra Yellin and Jordan Ruyle, and two granddaughters . . ."

IMHO, there is no "one right way" to make your way into music. When I was in high school, I constantly listened to the bands Genesis and Yes -- and hardly anything else. Not exactly a diverse musical diet! It was only when I went off to college that my musical interests began to expand into other areas -- jazz, classical, folk, bluegrass, and all the rest.

Some more recommended Jimmy Herring: Back in the day, this band used to come through Athens regularly. (This album was made in the Georgia Theater in Athens.) I probably saw Colonel Bruce & the ARU perform twenty times or more -- including their most recent reunion show at the Georgia Theater in Athens, which happened few years ago. They were a fantastic band -- and Herring was an integral part of it. R.I.P. Bruce Hampton. By the way, THANK YOU for the wonderful concert review, Ed. Now I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Herring & McLaughlin in Atlanta later this month!

Me too. Live in Tokyo is the WR record that I enjoy most -- by a considerable margin. I don't dislike the Jaco-period band. I just like the Zawinul-Shorter-Vitous group much more. If I want to hear Jaco, I'm more likely to turn to these:
