Hmm. I wasn't aware of that one. Sounds fascinating. Someone should do a Sonet jazz reissue series. Something along the lines of what Elemental is doing with Xanadu. I'd pony up the cash for Okay Temiz's Oriental Wind with Bobo Stenson and Lars Danielsson. Or what about Jimmy Rowles Isfahan? Or the New York Jazz Quartet's Song of the Black Knight? Or Bob Brookmeyer's Back Again with Thad Jones? I'm sure that there are many other interesting Sonet recordings that aren't readily available. It's probably not financially feasible. But one can always hope...

Last night, I experienced the same thing. In my case, that page appeared because I was running an ad-blocker extension in my web-browser (Chrome). When I disabled the ad-blocker specifically for the allmusic.com domain, then the pop-up page disappeared. Of course, then a bunch of ads started appearing on the site -- "Buy a Cadillac!!!" -- but I guess that's the price you pay for free access to the site. ...Don't think it's malware. Just the allmusic site insisting that your eyeballs have access to their revenue-generating ads.

I hear you. I always tell my kids that if I won the lottery, I'd continue to drive a "normal" car -- but I'd have one HELLUVA stereo system.

Thanks for sharing that. ...it's still strange that Mulgrew's gone.

I agree with you, felser. Along with Gypsy Folk Tales, Blakey's records on Timeless and Concord are often overlooked. Bobby's "fingerprints" are all over them -- and I mean that in a good way!

It's all relative. Compared to what you'd find on Crosley's less expensive 'tables, a $70 Ortofon cartridge IS high end.

I've been listening to Jazz Batá on YouTube for the last few days. Today, I lucked out and found the actual disc in a local shop. The CD includes the entire '72 album plus 5 of 6 tracks from another Valdés LP, Tema de Chaka, from '82. It was really inexpensive too. Lucky day.

Dave Liebman in Conversation with CJ Shearn

Thanks CJ! I'm definitely going to give this a listen! -
I'm just back from my local audio shop, where I SPLURGED on a new cartridge for my turntable. I had them install a Dynavector 10X5 on my Rega Planar 3. Now, I've got the improved 'table hooked back up to my system, and I'm spinning some vinyl. At this moment, Richie Kamuca's Richie is playing. Phew!!! It sounds great!

The other day, I stumbled across this recording while poking around on discogs. It reminded me of this thread. Interesting group of musicians. Lots of heavies. Anyone heard it? -
Just scored this off eBay: Jimmy Rowles & Michael Moore - "Profile": The Music of Henri Renaud (Columbia, 1981) I've wanted to hear this French import for a long time, but I never could find it for a reasonable price -- until today.

Totally agree!

Thanks for the heads-up on this, Larry. I'll check it out.

Blue Note: Uncompromising Expression - The Singles Collection

Not necessarily perverse. But certainly ironic. -
Bev, I hear you! Many people deny themselves all sorts of experience because they think certain types of music -- including jazz! -- are only for cognoscenti, people who have special training or abilities. That's a shame. People mistakenly think that it's an intellectual exercise, and that keeps them away. From my point of view, the best music -- whether it's classical or jazz or whatever -- is powerful because it's visceral and immediate and personal. It always speaks first and foremost to our feelings. It reminds me of a quote by Hermann Scherchen: "Music does not have to be understood. It has to be listened to."

I agree with both of you. I MUCH prefer Pepper's music from the latter part of his career.

Brahms - Piano works, Opp. 76, 116, 117 / Dmitri Alexeev (EMI Classics) Beautiful. -
I was only eight years old in 1976, so I don't have many musical memories of my own at that point. But my father was a big music-lover back then. He'd come home from work, put a record on the turntable, ease into the couch, and listen. If he was home, music was always playing -- so I have vivid childhood memories of his music. Some of my dad's favorites were Santana, Steely Dan, the Allman Brothers Band, and Hall & Oates. (I didn't realize it at the time, but I first time I ever heard Wayne Shorter was on a Steely Dan record. And the first time I heard Joe Farrell was on Abandoned Luncheonette.) I do remember having a K-Tel LP of my own that included "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart and "Dreamboat Annie" by Heart. Still love those songs. Music aside, I associate '76 with Jimmy Carter. I guess that was inescapable, seeing as how I grew up in Georgia. I remember seeing his smiling peanut caricature EVERYWHERE. One family friend even had a smiling peanut on their toilet seat lid!
