  1. Here's a fun exercise. Let's all select a standard along with a rough list of some of the jazz greats who recorded it. Let's hear whose version you prefer. I'll start off with "Tenderly." Aside from Organissimo's wonderful version, here are some artists who recorded it: Jimmy Smith Louis Armstrong Kenny Burrell Ben Webster Lester Young Three Sounds Dizzy Reece Oscar Peterson Bud Powell Bill Evans Tal Farlow Clifford Brown/Max Roach Hard to ignore Bill Evan's version, but I think my personal favorite is Dizzy Reece's contribution on "Comin On." Which version do you guys like? (Also, someone else pick a standard and start a thread on that)
  2. Has anyone in the US seen the Larry Young in a bricks-and-mortar? I wonder if it was delayed all over the States...
  3. I bought the Hill and the Sam Rivers today at a shop in Dearborn for $14 each. For some reason, the Larry Young didn't arrive in either Toledo or Dearborn...
  4. I'm a huge Pats fan and I have serious doubts that they will get through the Seahawks unscathed. Alexander is a premier running back and to my eyes, the Pats have yet to prove that they can stop this kind of runner. Their only hope will be turnovers and Brady... a familiar formula. BTW, if they get through Seattle, their next opponent after that is the Jets. This is the game where they can become the "official" successive wins leader (the NFL does not recognize the playoffs for consecutive wins records). I have tickets to that game. Later, Kevin Nice to see Kevin finally get in on the act and talk football!! Seahawks look tough this year, but I haven't seen them enough to truly judge. I'd still give the Patriots the edge at home. I think the defence is starting to jell a bit now. Expect stronger performances over the next few weeks. Belichick has stopped shuffling around the offensive line, and the defence is learning to get along without Mt. Washington.
  5. Agree, Marty. Jets are looking very tough. Heading for a collision course at Foxboro with the Pats. They'll probably split the series this year...
  6. To our Bud Powell fan, Happy Birthday Brad!!
  7. To our Brazilian friend, Happy Birthday!!
  8. I've been thinking that if the CDs ever do show up, offering them for sale here at Org with the proviso that, rather than pay me, the buyer would make a contribution to the Board through the "Donate" link. Upon B3-ers confirmation of the donation the CDs would be sent. But at this point, I have not received the CDs.
  9. Monday night game about to start. I've got a feeling the Chiefs are going to win tonight. I'm going for the upset...
  10. Aaaaargh!!
  11. Loathe as I am to get back into this mess, I will reply to B3-er's direct question, and only because it is the Lord of the Board. In a word: "NO" I acknowledge that you didn't take this issue public, Leeway; and I also acknowledge that you don't have to answer B-3er's question if you don't want to; but it would be nice to know if you do get the cds eventually. It would help all of us who do order cds from Canadian boardmembers. The idea is not to stir up this issue all over again. I do recognize it as a "dead" issue at this point. Just for information purposes it would be nice to know...
  12. too busy sending pms to himself...
  13. Good call, B-3er!
  14. I ran into my next door neighbor as I was mowing my grass this morning. He's a Viking's fan, and I asked him who they were playing this week. He said that they had the off week. What about the Patriots game? He said he picked Buffalo in an upset. I told him that it wouldn't happen; and I said, "The Pats defense will sack Bledsoe six times today." I was off by one. It was seven sacks... B-) (most of them came at the end, however, when it was "tee-off time")
  15. as long as you stay away from picks on Pats games...
  16. Yes, Leeway, we would like to hear... BTW, I cannot resist telling a story about Al. He sent me a mini-lp cd once which arrived all bent up. The package had been mangled in tansit. The cd itself was bent and rendered unplayable. I placed it between a couple of heavy flat object out in the sun and managed to "unbend" it enough to make it playable. I did contact Al before I was able to fix the cd, and we agreed to share the costs of the damage. In the end, because it was fixed, there was no need to partially reimburse me. My last order from Al was a mix of cds in jewel cases and those in mini-lp format. When the package arrived, I found that all the cds were in jewel cases. Al had taken the initiative to protect the mini-lp cds by placing them in blank jewel cases. I never asked him to do that. As a seller, he's got some integrity, folks...that was a nice gesture on his part.
  17. Happy Birthday, Upright. Haven't yet had the pleasure to meet you, but I'm sure we'll run into each other one evening at an Organissimo show.
  18. Haven't heard this one yet.
  19. An excellent assessment, in my view. I think Jimmy's Verve stuff is important.
  20. Yes, forgot to mention this one. Thumbs up also...
  21. I didn't care for this session at all. Much of it seemed to come down to a lot of screeching. You can't deny the intense emotional play on some of the songs, but in the end, I found the disc wasn't essential. That is strange assessment, I find. The album uses then comtemporary pop tunes turning them into Great Black Music. It had been done before with Broadway tunes and Beatles ditties, but Kirk turns to Motown &co to come up with something much more vibrant and original, producing a true fusion of jazz soul-music. Like Coltrane did with My Favorite Things, Kirk makes you forget the original. In my book, that makes this a pretty important album in jazz's history. and fegh if it ain't a big PAR-TAYYY!!!! as well Let's see what Barak thinks about it. He's got my old copy...
  22. I like Jimmy Smith's Verve stuff. Good are: BLUE BASH ORGAN GRINDER'S SWING MASTER MASTER II THE CAT GOT MY MOJO WORKING/HOOCHIE KOOCHIE MAN THE BOSS ANGEL EYES I did not like BASHIN. Hated the orchestra. I believe the Verve stuff is important because they are different than the Blue Note recordings. Best of all might be the two sessions with Wes Montgomery.
  23. The guy was damned good; that's all I know...
