Although not a true innovator, Hank was a master of the language. I like his melodic ideas, his style, and articulation. There is a nuance in his playing I just dig. I can't quite describe it, but it's a combination of his compositional style, his melodic motif construction and the timbre he gets from his axe. I like his tone and it is quite distinctive. As a versatile player, he couldalso combine warm, soft passionate legato balladry with fiery stacatto, chicken picken biting lines. For me, albums like "No Room For Squares", "Straight No Filter" and "Soul Station" make me sit back and contemplate, "AHHHHHH, that's the sh!t right there" Not only a great composer, he often surrounded himself with great players and USUALLY great players = great chemistry Just my two cents Personal taste is a big part but these are just some things to think about

For me it would be the sound of the B-3, 'specially in a funky, greasszy soul setting. I was never a fan of the greazze. It sounded too repetitive for me, but the more I listen to Patton's Boogaloo and Blues for Lou and some other things, I realize the Greeaase is the one major thing I've been lacking in my listening. I'm looking forward to picking up some more of this stuff ie Patton, Earland, 'Groove' Holmes

You can say that again!! Incidentally, when does he ever let up? I love his playing on Hank's 'No Room for Squares'. The driving sound he gets on that ride cymbal is majik. -
I kinda dig Use3d's Auron is a kickass Final Fantasy character. Hey, what happened to my avatar??? It disappeared

Yah, Sound of Market in Philly had it as of about a year ago, I just sat on my tail and didn't snag it...and it was probably hard to come by then too!

AWW Blue and Ike !!! Blue and Ike!! Ike man IKE! As for 'Rough and Tumble' it is a little dull. In the liner notes to 'The Spoiler' it mentions that the two dates are similar but 'The Spoiler' is much more exciting. I haven't listened to 'Rough' a whole lot, I end up changing it to something else halfway into the second tune, but it probably has some redeeming qualities to it. -
Hello all, I really want to find Woody Shaw with the Tone Jansa Quartet, I think on the Red Label(?) If anybody could point me in the right direction I would be greatly appreciative. Unfortunately(or fortunately, however you look at it ) I don't own a credit card, but if someone knows where to find this disc I will gladly reimburse the individual. Thanks for any help! Bill

Alright I'll play..... 'Am I Blue' made me want to retch. Johnny Coles' clams were too much to bear and the distortion on the lower end of the organ was way too distracting. I couldn't get into it at all. 'Blue John' also irked me when I picked it up and I promptly sold it. Not being familiar with Patton OR Braith, I was expecting something completely different..........Unfortunately I've since warmed up to Braith through his double disc Conn and I'm starting to enjoy what little Patton I've heard. I wish I still had 'Blue' That's why I keep everything now. -

My First (and last?) Sports Topic!

Well, Devils hammered the Ducks towards the end last night. Ducks started great but ended up looking very beaten in the last ten minutes of the 3rd period. I still hate the Devils for handing the Flyers' ass to them in 2001 so I'm rootin' fer the Ducks. -
Hit the local used store yesterday and was pleased to find a promo copy of 'BOOGALOO'!! Haven't had time to listen to it throroughly but my first impression is that it's very fun music. Simple yet not oversimplified. Very funky. Harold Alexander's tenor playing is probably the first thing that hit me. I'll report back upon further listening This place actually had a bunch of Rare Grooves but I passed on them temporarily for Tony Williams' Story of Neptune

Beautiful arrangements. Lush, nice textures, excellent instrumentation. Just a few great sessions under other people which he arranged: Lush Life - Lou Donaldson A Slice of the Top - Hank Mobley ( I think ) The Spoiler - Stanley Turrentine I'm very curious about what will be included in the Pearson MS.

SWISS cheese on a burrito and enchilada?? What the hell are they smokin'?

Here's a couple off the top of my head Lee Morgan's 8 bar solo break on 'Locomotion' from Blue Train - I remember rewinding that puppy about 20 times the first time I heard the album......still makes me cringe 'Softly as a Morning Sunrise' from Unity This band has such a great chemistry and when Elvin changes from brushes to sticks as Joe Henderson's solo starts, I get that "Oh YEAH" feeling.
