    tubes

Anyone looking for tubes would be better off damn near anywhere!
  3. I was never much of an Elvis Presley fan, though my grandmother liked his gospel stuff. Heck, I never bought an Elvis LP until My Aim is True...
  4. Wow. Portland has to cancel a Cassandra Wilson concert for lack of ticket sales, and you guys get The Thing. Maybe I didn't move quite north enough...
  5. I wouldn't say that's completely accurate, but on the other hand, from what I remember of my twentyfive years in the bay area, I'd say it's more accurate than inaccurate, Johnny. The Bay Area is definitely a "straight ahead jazz" place, and a lot of people are too full of themselves to allow for joking in something as *FUCKING IMPORTANT* as jazz. What you did would be like organizing a pro-Bush rally in People's Park!
  6. You know, back when I first got into jazz, I heard this Rollins guy was pretty good. The only sax player I was really into at the time was Coltrane, so I figured it was time to expand my horizons. I went to the store, found Tenor Madness, went home, and threw it on the stereo without reading the liner notes or cover. I almost gave up on jazz right there. I figured if I was that into Coltrane, and this Rollins guy sounded just like Coltrane on a lot of the first tune, I obviously didn't have the critical faculties to really enjoy jazz...
  7. Yeah, but he looked that way 40 years ago!
  8. I just looked it up...I'm 153.
  9. I agree completely, and that is one fucked up thing. I understand discussing it, lamenting about it, and trying to fix it. What I don't understand is blaming Getz or Presley for how fucked up society was/is.
  10. Definitely one of the biggies of modern SF.
  11. I guess that's why I like this board; it's one of the few places I can still feel young at 51...
  12. I not only agree with that, I have a serious problem with people who talk about the outrage of artists stealing from other artists. To use the obvious and most often used example, Elvis Presley. People act as if he had no interest in the music he performed but was just using it to get rich at the expense of African-American artists who came before him. This is such a silly perspective I have to wonder what causes it.
  13. Yeah, if your choice is between the Beatles and the Stones, I'd have to agree...
  14. That's strange to me, because the first thing I thought of when I read the Cash quote was early rap, and how it developed out of a culture as an expression of that culture, and then later just became another refuge for posters and wannabes. As for the early practitioners not knowing or caring about their roots, I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
  15. Veronica Lake Veronica Lodge Veronica Webb
  16. Yeah, there were other good shows than the Rockford Files, I'll admit, but I remember a lot of shit from TV in the seventies. Probably because I was such a tube addict back then... Speaking of addictions, if we don't get a new Law & Order: Criminal Intent pretty soon, I'm gonna go postal!
  17. H & R Block Edith Head Billericay Dickie
  18. If a joke needs explaining, it was too stupid to post in the first place, so I'll just shuffle off now...
  19. With luck, all April Fools topics...
  20. And where the hell have you been? We were about to start debating your existance in the political forum...
  21. Sugar Ray Leonard Leonard Maltin John Malkovich
  22. They applauded because they knew he would beat the shit out of himself later that night...
  23. I caught a couple of minutes of an episode of Lost the other night, and I owe you Lost fans an apology. I swear, I thought it was one of those stupid reality shows like Survivor or something. Duh...
