Just to clear up my comments, I didn't think too much of Intolerable Cruelty either. My mention of it in my post was meant as a put down of Burn After Reading, not an endorsement. Personally, I found Clooney's overacting much more annoying in Burn After Reading. On the acting front, I thought most of the actors in Burn did a great job with what they had; I don't blame the actors at all. I just think the story was poorly written, as if they got to a point and said "fuck it; I'm not sure what we can do to fix this..let's go ahead and start filming."

So, Quincy, what'd ya do for him? -
Bullshit. Cecil Taylor has always done my spine a bit of good.

Saw this one tonight, and frankly, I was very disappointed. It's no Big Lebowski. In fact, it's not even an Intolerable Cruelty. The Coen Brothers "brand" will no longer be an automatic go signal for me, I'm afraid...

Oooooh...that's the one that drives me up a wall! At least it's obvious that "the market" is not a person (I think), but this one really misleads people and screws up their thinking. Don't know why; it's just as obvious, but there it is. -

Jim's obviously making this up; those loans were only for poor (read black) people... -

If "investor class" means rich, I'd say there is not much to this opinion. A person loses a shit load of money from investments gone bad and he's now going to want to pay more in taxes? I think the opposite would be true, as they would want to hang on to even more of what they're making. The smart investor knows to look at the bottom line and treat taxes as just another expense rather than the ONLY expense. When the economy has been mismanaged to the point that there is no income (and hence, no taxes) that's not really such a good thing... -

I'm not sure how far that goes with bipartisanship, since, in spite of what the Berigans of the world beleive, Clinton was probably our most conservative president of the last twenty years. The problem is that the entire conservative (and libertarian) approach is wrong. No disagreement here. If that is the case, then Libertairans must be completely ignorant of history. Economic cycles were far more violent, and hurt far more people, before the government began intervening in the process. Perhaps. But then such corruption could hardly be unexpected when the hands off approach libertarians and conservatives support practically encourages it. The problem with the free market theory is that it is sorely outdated. It has joined the ranks of communism in the "nice on paper" category. When industry in this country meant individuals or family manufacturing, the free market was great. But with the emergence of corporations, government interference as a counterbalance is essential in protecting the freedom of individuals from these corporations. -

I think you're being silly by suggesting that the solution to the crisis is to turn to the Libertarians, the one group who would remove any and all regulation immediately. This problem was brought upon us in large part due to the wonderful Republican "free enterprise solution" of removing "unnecessary" regulation. Now that this has been discredited, I don't think you'll convince many (other than Berigan) that we should carry this approach even farther... -

The internet was a bad idea. I used to have time to do things, rather than post about them! -
I don't know what to say on this one. I know Floyd took a lot of criticism over the years, but for me, this was THE band, and Wright's 'aural painting' never failed to delight me. Shit.

You know, while I always thought of my 'discovering jazz' as an adult as a drawback, but there is that: I'll never have that "deflated pompous windbag" feeling with jazz...I just automatically assume anyone who's into jazz over 25 knows far more about it than I do!

How Many of Us Consider Ourselves to Be "Audiophiles?"
Jazzmoose replied to freejazz2020's topic in Audio Talk
Actually, the image that comes to me is the lonely geek with the 5-figure system and only three recordings to play, all boringly approved by his fellow audiophiles and containing music that everyone has heard to death. As an example, his entire jazz collection would be Kind of Blue... -
How Many of Us Consider Ourselves to Be "Audiophiles?"

The question I've always had (and this is serious, not the ususal 'me being a smart ass') is, how can recorded music be familiar to me if I've only heard it on crappy speakers? Am I just fooling myself and going for the speakers that color the music in a way that I'm used to, or what? I know that this is sneered at, and if you are used to properly reproduced music, I can understand that, but isn't there some value in comparing stats, in order to find equipment? Help! -
Sorry; if I was to confirm your answer (add an "e" to the end of the last name), I would feel obligated to do it in a condescending, dismissive manner, and since I'm no longer entitled to do that, it just wouldn't be the same...

I've been listening to Neil Young for close to forty years, and I've got to say, while Thunderclap Newman doesn't sound like good Neil Young vocals, it sounds a lot like bad Neil Young vocals to me. At least on this song. Besides, who else could it have been?

No, no; don't try to make me feel better...I'm devastated. If this had happened when I was seventeen, I would have had to choose between suicide or being a business major: it's that upsetting!
